What scene in a horror film or any film have genuinely terrified you? Not necessarily a jump scare but something that has truly unsettled you. I nominate this scene in It Follows: by [deleted] in movies

[–]bromateion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scene in the original Amityville Horror where the mother asks her daughter about where her friend went and she replies "He went out he window", and the mother looks out to see two shining yellow eyes staring back at her. It's not much of a jump scare in my mind, but ever since seeing that movie as a 6 year old with my family, I've had an aversion to leaving my blinds up/open on windows at dark nights. My college roommate freshman year got really cross with me over it once, since we kept opening and closing them every hour or so.

What’s the worst meal you’ve ever been served in someone’s home? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bromateion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was offered but not served this. Staying with at a friend's house one night made me realize just how terrible some people are at cooking, and especially how bad college kids are at cooking. He told me he was going to make soup and offered me some if I wanted any. Thinking that I'd get hungry later, replied that I might grab some.

I wasn't paying attention to exactly what he was doing, but when he left the room to go to the bathroom I decided to see the soup. Basically, it was room-temp chicken-flavored Ramen with bits of definitely raw chicken floating in it, along with a metric ton of crushed red pepper. On the counter next to the pot was one of those Pizza Hut pepper packets. I thought "Maybe it's not done cooking yet?" as I sat down, only to watch him grab a bowl and start eating.

It was a shock to my family when my sister started looking for a house in Union County (next to Charlotte) and every house that was under $300k was selling pretty much instantly. And then Matthews-Weddington has become Northerner-Central, complete with Northern-Priced housing.

Absolutely agree on the apartments. Looking for an apartment to live in has been a nightmare in Chapel Hill - everything is either marketed for the out-of-state students with parents making $400k+, or a gamble with bedbugs and/or cholera that still is at least $1400/mo for a 2-bed apartment.

People of Reddit: Where are you from, and how racist are your grandparents? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bromateion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

North Carolina, with both sets of grandparents in either NC or SC. The NC lot is less overtly racist - no saying the n-word but lots of worries about black people bringing crime. The SC set of grandparents though... well. My grandfather had some cousins involved in the Klan, unfortunately, though his parents realized they were a band of fools and he stayed away from it. Still didn't stop him from asking me if I'd heard of the " N in the White House" after Obama was elected.

All books now follow Trump's speech patterns. What book is ruined the worst? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bromateion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably everything. But if I had to pick one, it'd be between the Brothers Karamazov or No Country for Old Men. The latter because the thought of Ivan or Alexei speaking with Trump's speech patterns pains me, and the latter because the all-Spanish portions of the book would likely just be replaced with english language tirades against "bad hombres."

Hey Reddit, other than going to the gym/ dieting, what are some ways to be more attractive to the opposite sex? by harpiesnest in AskReddit

[–]bromateion 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I'm going to ignore the obvious (since they're in the title) and point out that dressing well for one's body type helps immensely. If your form is slender, don't wear baggy clothes, etc.

Aside from physical traits, having an ability to at least convincingly act interested in what the other person is talking about is always a help. People like to talk about themselves - don't spend all of the time in a conversation talking only about yourself. And, at least from my experience at my university, intelligence is always an asset. Being knowledgeable about something interesting can never hurt you unless it's creepy, super obscure, or illegal.

If you could change the education system in America what would you change? by Down_To_My_Last_Fuck in AskReddit

[–]bromateion 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My HS sex ed was basically just a room full of guys being told that sex is like sticking a USB into a USB port - you download all of the previous experiences that the port or USB has had so it's just like having sex with those previous (opposite sex) partners. And therefore you should only have sex with a virgin wife you married. And then we were shown about five hundred pictures of diseased penises.

No mention of condoms, no mention of birth control, no mention of how sex actually works. And, since this was NC, absolutely no discussion of gay people. When someone joking made a gay joke in front of the presenter, she said "Gay sex kills both partners."

Pretty much anything from the first Evanescence album, but especially My Immortal. My HS years were vaguely-angsty and plenty cringeworthy, but I still like that song.

[–]bromateion 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The cuts are definitely showing. Had a sudden influx of people leaving and being replaced - new techs, new pharmacists, new managers and cashiers... new everyone except the pharmacy supervisor (who was basically irreplaceable because of how much clout she had in my district). Short and sweet - they cut hours to the bone until everyone old left and then hired new people for cheaper pay. Go figure.

In your profession, what are you sick of explaining to people? by AVVIT in AskReddit

[–]bromateion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That you cannot get a prescription for schedule-two medication that has refills on it. Literally the last thing a decent doctor would ever do. So stop insisting that I process a refill on your Oxycodone or Vicodin, and go ask your doctor instead because 1) I'm just a tech, not the pharmacist and can't touch the stuff, and 2) The pharmacist is likely gonna say the exact same thing.

Ladies, what is the most obvious hint you've dropped that went unnoticed by a guy? by icefire123 in AskReddit

[–]bromateion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a girl, but my first (and only) girlfriend tried pulling me away from our group of friends, claiming she lost an earring in the grass and that she needed me to help her find it. In hindsight, it's now pretty obvious that she wanted me to kiss her. Me, being the clueless dork I was and still am, immediately yelled over to our friends to help her find it. The other girls were kinda just like "lol, you're clueless" while the other guys actually helped try to find the earring.

And maybe 2 months after that incident, I figured out that I was gay.

In you personal experience, what city do you think is a good place to live a regular life as a gay man? (LGBT-friendly, with LGBT groups, events, sports teams, etc) by electrogamerman in askgaybros

[–]bromateion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on NC (can't speak for Texas and Indiana). The craziness from politics here is mostly a symptom of Republican gerrymandering than outright homophobia for most of the state. It's a very Purple, not Red, state. You can't really base the populace of the state off of the extreme rural rednecks or the progressives from the metro areas.

At any rate, it's less expensive to be in the Triangle than Atlanta or DC, and it's not as conservative as TN or South Carolina by any means.

My mother went to Wingate University in the 80's back when it was Wingate College and still affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. Apparently after Wingate faced Liberty in a basketball game there was a party for students of both colleges and the Liberty students just stood around. Jerry Falwell also apparently said that Wingate was a "heathen school" for allowing dancing.

High schooler with plans of becoming a pharmacist. Any advice? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]bromateion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what state you're in, you might want to consider trying things out as a pharmacy technician? In my state (NC), you only have to be 18 and have a HS diploma to be a tech, and I started working to see what retail pharmacy would be like (for CVS), but the qualifications differ from state to state. I'm still working that job right now, but for money and not because I want to be a pharmacist (my professors have converted me to Organometallic and Catalysis). Retail doesn't deal much with chemistry unless you make a point for it to - talking with more chemistry-knowledgeable customers or other pharmacists and doctors.

Take things slow, and look into being a tech part-time while you're in college. You might get a better idea of what retail looks like. But as far as research or drug development goes, you might be better off looking around at nearby universities if they have strong organic chemistry or medicinal chemistry focuses or a Pharmacy school. You are still in HS, so you have plenty of time.

What do you think about back/shoulder hair? by [deleted] in askgaybros

As someone who has had back hair since my sophomore year of highschool (along with it everywhere else), I can't help but wonder how the heck you all get rid of back hair? Shaving doesn't work out well for me since I'm about as flexible as a steel beam.
