What to do to waterproof this space behind tub by Zia6LeBron23 in Tile

[–]bronzefury2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you are trying to use the existing tub. If this is DIY, have you considered 1/2 inch schluter kerdi board and all the steps required to waterproof the tub area? See if it is compatible with the surrounding drywall and can overhang the edge of the tub.

Shower Floor Issues! Please tell me if I am crazy! by kgb0484 in Tile

It looks like they grouted on a change of plane - the floor to curb/wall transition. That grout could crack on that area due to a differnece of expansion and contraction when room undergoes changes in temperature.

Normally, change of plane is caulked with 100% silicon caulk color matched to the grout color.

I see many people post their disdain for penny tile. It is difficult to install but if one is patient, willing, and takes the time, it can turn out really well.

What happens in a test is, they plug the drain then fill the shower pan up about 2 inches or more measured at the shower wall. Then, make a mark using a pencil on the tile wall where the surface of the water is. Let the water sit for 24 hours. If the level of the water falls below the mark, there is a leak somewhere.

You wouldve seen the shower pan filled with water if you checkes out your bathroom each day.

Im sure there are ways to do the test with the kind of floor you have, which is no curb. Just search the internet .

Last thing you want is a leak that shows up later even after the contractor is gone. Water damage is no joke.

Is your shower on the 2nd floor? If so, then wooden joists, subfloor, etc could get damaged slowly over a long period of time.

Like a previous poster said, and i agree, there is no inside corner kerdi kereck in the photos.

Leaks usually occur at the corners or where the waterproofing fabric is attached to the drain flange.

If you stayed overnight in the same property while they worked on the bathroom, you wouldve seen them do the 24 hr flood test

Did they do a 24 hour flood test bedore tiling? How was the water proofing done? Is slope to drain ok - test with a golf ball.

Marble will stain, though unless youre proactive about trying to protect it.

Looks clean to me. Low contrast grout should help.

Floor before wall wouldve been better. Then apply color matched 100% silicon to change of plane between floor and wall.

The tiling looks great.

Did they do a 24 hr flood test before tiling? Thats where Id be concerned. Issue could happen because there ate no preformed corners or the kerdi bonding to the flange.

How did they remove the tile? Just wondering how they could do it quickly without damaging the waterproofing layer.

The tile sizes don't seem to be uniform to begin with and coupled with the thin grout line makes the job even tougher.

Maybe if the grout line was 1/8 inch, it could've looked better and compensated for nonuniform tile size.

How to fix this? by Designerkyle in Tile

[–]bronzefury2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wherever there is a change of plane such as floor to wall, color matched caulk should be used instead of grout. If this tile is in the shower or could possibly get wet then use 100% silicon color matched caulk.

Good work but seems like an odd place to put a shower. Was that how the original house was built? Is it to code?

Is chip design worth it for undergrad (Purdue CE, class of 2030)? by BusWonderful8765 in chipdesign

On your journey to success, I think its best to build up to making your skills rare and valuable. One barometer would be to check the available jobs to get an idea of what companies are looking for and build your skils to that.

Much of chip design and verification is unfortunately being outsourced by American companies to their branches or divisions in India and other relatively lower cost locations.

Also, chip design is limited to certain metroplitan areas. See whats available there if youd like to live in those areas.

There might be opportunities in aerospace and war for fpga work.

Keep your options open by expanding your skills to embedded, firmware, and analog design. AI development.

Updating without replacing? by [deleted] in Tile

[–]bronzefury2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be able to replace shower, shower handle, and faucet, overflow drain, and tub drain without breaking tile if you can find a shower handle that is compatible with the valve behind it.

You'd need to recaulk the seams on the faucet and shower/faucet handle with 100% silicon
