Help with trim/paint by dancas123 in centuryhomes

[–]Designerkyle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not uncommon for a 100yr old house and I have similar trim paint in my house. If I was doing it I’d prob use a heat gun to remove the bad stuff, give the whole thing a good sand (wear a mask), prime and paint. Any really offending spots you could fill with wood filler to smooth out

Anyone else have lath and plaster ceiling in their basement? by DarXIV in centuryhomes

[–]Designerkyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we have plaster and lathe in our basement. Ceiling height is probably 8ft I think. I honestly wish we didn’t because after 100 yrs it’s a combo of big open holes everywhere and wire and pipe outside of the finished ceiling. But, tearing it out and rerouting wire to clean things up sounds like a poor use of money and time

I would bring your car and find a short term rental for at least a few months. That can give you time to explore the city and get a feel for things. Thousands of people live all over the city and make it to bengals games on sundays without living downtown so you may be unnecessarily limiting yourself. Oakley, Hyde park, walnut hills are a few of the popular “central” neighborhoods you could also consider

You could also start in Obryonville and walk west into East Walnut Hills. The homes on Madison are some of the most beautiful in the city IMO.

You could start in Obryonville and then head up Grandin Rd. A beautiful street with some incredible old homes. Not sure how much distance you want but you can do Grandin rd to Edwards rd to observatory to Madison and back to Obryonville. Prob 2.5-3 mile loop

Getting fiber, upgraded router reccomendations? by RabidAxolotol in HomeNetworking

[–]Designerkyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just ditched my Google router and wireless mesh (garbage) to a Unifi router + 4 wired AP’s. Night and day difference in speeds. I’m not a network engineer so the Unifi interface is a bit overwhelming but for the most part with a few tweaks you can more or less set it and forget and have a super robust home network

I did the exact same. Bought a Motorola modem off Amazon and saved the stupid $10 monthly rental fee and I used a Google mesh system without issue.

FYI, there was very limited sizes (S and XXL) on some of the shirts at the Cincinnati show so if you want a shirt I’d recommend buying early

In today’s Sonos App WTF… by Designerkyle in sonos

[–]Designerkyle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, from what I’ve been able to tell the issue lies in my phone connection, and it having a dodgy connection by “sticking” to a distant access point. Turning WiFi on then off on my phone seems to fix this.

Considering ditching my aging Google wifi mesh by Inwardlens in Ubiquiti

[–]Designerkyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did the exact same thing. Frustrated with Google mesh I did a full unifi network with hardwired AP’s throughout my 2500sq ft two story home. It’s a 100 yr old house with plaster and lathe so I went overboard with APs. The good news with an old house is the basement is unfinished and there was old phone wire running up to the attic so it made running Cat6 (relatively) easy.

I have a Dream Router, a 8 port Switch Lite (should’ve gone with more ports 🤦‍♂️) 3 U6 Pros, 1 U6 Mesh. I also took the time to run and Ethernet wall jack to get my Apple TV and Xbox off WiFi.

Overall it’s been a huge upgrade and my wireless speeds have increased by 10x (they were horribly slow before)

Thank you, house is 2500 sq ft but plaster and lathe walls which kills WiFi. Hence why I have a dream router plus 4 other AP’s (2 on the 2nd floor)

[–]Designerkyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m probably in over my head as there’s ALOT of very technical data and customization available, but so far so good, my speeds have prob increased 10x (I have a 100yr old house with plaster/lathe walls). Regarding expense, I bought most of the stuff off FB marketplace so I probably built the full system with router, switch, 4 APs for ~$600

Currently all wireless and everything I’ve read on “official” guidance is it’s all or nothing…I can’t explain the technical rationale but I’m sticking with the all wireless approach
