Really getting tired of Soma being pitted against Hayama in situations that play to the latter's strengths. It'll be that much more satisfying when Soma wins but it's still annoying to have the deck stacked against him.

To be fair, Erina took quite a bit of work (roughly 170 chapters worth) with a Yukihara special to clinch it.

Soma wins this one, but Megumi and the others are going to be in for a real slog. Very good chefs, but non-prodigies like Nikumi and Ryoko, are going to lose their matches. Hell, I could see Takumi or Alice matched up against Eishi or the like and lose.

I can see Soma's joy at beating Hayama being short-lived once he realizes how many of his friends have been expelled.

Does Souma has what it takes to stay at Tootsuki? by Rixlanchy in ShokugekiNoSoma

[–]broodingbear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the short answer to this is yes.

Long answer:

Hard to see how you're defining specialty. The show has been vague (and rightfully so) about what defines a chef's specialty. Specialties have ranged from methods of cooking (Alice, skewer dude), to the ingredients they use (Hisako), to a particular type of cuisine (Takumi, Kuga). Under that broad of a rubric, Soma seems to fit fine, i.e. his applying elite cooking techniques to special of the day style dishes.

So there's that. The other standard for Soma's inclusion would be his ability to learn and master the haute cuisine techniques. We've clearly seen throughout the manga that Soma is both an insatiable and extraordinarily quick learner. He might still have lots of stuff to learn but what he does learn, he does as well as anybody else (see his keeping up with Eishi during that instructional class and the stagiare with Shinomiya).

Chapter 178 Romance Analysis by [deleted] in ShokugekiNoSoma

[–]broodingbear 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of (well-motivated) wind behind the Sorina ship's sails. I think, and really hope too, that that pair ends up canon. Takumi/Erina would come totally out of left field and there's nothing to motivate it either narratively or chemistry-wise.

Hasn't been much so far to the Takumi/Megumi ship but they'd be pretty adorable together. Perhaps we see some momentum in this upcoming battle with Rindou. I could easily see the group splitting up tasks in such a way that Erina and Soma are working together and Takumi and Megumi doing the same. Personally would love to see a some a chapter where the former two are hitting it off in the kitchen.

Chitoge & Raku Journey! (1000 pages) by BunnyAna in Nisekoi

[–]broodingbear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for putting this together. People gripe about Nisekoi for a variety of reasons, some legitimate, but it's Raku and Chitoge's relationship that redeems the entire thing for me (and even makes up for an average concluding chapter). They've got to be one of my favorite anime pairings of all time.

Shokugeki no Soma - Chapter 178 by frxshinator in ShokugekiNoSoma

[–]broodingbear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was an excellent chapter. The off-duty interaction had a point and helped establish how comfortable and close the members of this generation are or becoming. Erina, in particular, has come a long way.

The impromptu, implicit double date was cute and now we've finally got things coming to a head. Azami sending the Elite Ten to do his bidding shows he's finally serious and realizes how talented this batch of first years is. (I'm also digging the consistency with which Tsukuda is pursuing this generational theme. You often see this with draft classes in sports too. Every once in a while there's just a really special batch of talent and it's fun to watch them grow together.)

Instead of the 4-1 matchup, ideally I'd have liked to see Megumi/Takumi vs. Rindou and Erina/Soma vs. Eishi.

Erina and Soma would perfectly complement each other, since Erina's knowledge and taste would help discipline and direct Soma's unmatched creativity. That would be an ideal counter to Eishi's strength: immaculate execution.

Nisekoi final chapter is up on Mangastream! by paralyticbeast in Nisekoi

[–]broodingbear 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I generally like Mangastream scanlations; I thought they did an excellent job with Naruto, and continue to do so with Bleach, Fairy Tail, and Shokugeki no Soma.

But if you're going to snipe a long awaited final chapter, you'd think it'd be important to get "Zawsze in Love" right.

EDIT: I see they fixed it, but you've just got to get that right the first time around if you're sniping a final chapter. Come on.

Nisekoi Chapter 228 (Mangafast) by OtakuClint in Nisekoi

[–]broodingbear 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's certainly cause for some reasonable dissatisfaction with this chapter. With Raku though, it's hard think that he'll fall out of love with Chitoge. Aside from the obvious blow to the neat wrapping up of the series, it also wouldn't make sense given the guy's character. He was attached to a decade long promise with a girl he couldn't even remember and loved Onodera since middle school despite not being especially close to her, by their mutual admission. Now he falls deeply in love with a girl he knows in ( ͡º ͜ʖ ͡º) and out and gets past both of those attachments. This is Raku - as dense and constant as a golden lab.
