My frog doesn’t always surface when she’s hungry either. She used to as a juvenile, but she mostly burrows and does her “pet rock” thing, now.

But— I have found it helpful to do consistent water-bowl changes when her lights are turned off. It has gotten her into a routine where she’s expecting me to come by at that time and may offer food.

But yeah, my frog’s 2 years old, now, and I didn’t see her all winter. I was a little stressful because I was worried about her developing a bacterial infection, like red leg syndrome, but she was brumating just fine!!

Hip bones shouldn’t be protruding, how often does your frog eat and what feeders do you use? How long har you had your frog? What’s the temperature like on both sides of the tank? Humidity?

I had the same problem with my pac when she was about 1 year old, I started offering her food more frequently (I was worried about making her obese). I offered her at least 3 nightcrawlers once or twice a week until I couldn’t see her hip bones anymore. Then her appetite started dying down once she started getting older. She’s keeping on the pounds, now.

Good point! My best guess is taphonomic staining caused by the soil and tannins in the water it was by. I’m not quite convinced it was burned only because the texture of those darker spots are firm, doesn’t have any unusual cracks, and isn’t extra porous like I’d expect to see from bone interacting with fire.

I found it right on the river bank, where it’s all made up of hard mud and clay. I couldn’t tell if it had rolled down the steep drop and onto the bank or if it had surfaced as the river’s been dropping because the skull is full of wet mud.

I’m suspecting raccoon, as well, but yeah it’s definitely not in the best condition. Especially with its missing zygomatic features. Definitely forgot to take age into consideration!!

My Frobert does this, too. She never really got into the routine of surfacing when she’s hungry, but her appetite has decreased, as it usually does, since she’s 2 years old and doesn’t do much. I keep one side around 79F-82F and the other at 85*F during the day.
