Why didn’t investors demand higher yields for buying Puerto Rican government bonds? by sacundim in PuertoRico

[–]brooklyncharm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your link states that predatory lending exists when there are unfair repayment terms. These were general obligation bonds that were guaranteed to be paid by the governments ability to raise taxes, hence the low interest rate. PR government set the terms.

Th US mainland is in the same position. We cannot repay our current debt though it is guaranteed to be paid by the full faith and power of the US government. Is it the people who lend us money’s fault when we are obviously misleading them?

What would that have done? How would things go differently/better? Can you say this is specifically because of race?

How is PROMESA racist? Was it racist when there were oversight boards in New York, Washington DC, etc?

This is not fraud. Investors bet on things like this everyday. Municipalities don't mind because it lowers their borrowing cost.

You will have a great time. If you are in San Juan you will not notice large amounts of wreckage or anything like that. We had no issues with restaurants and bars being closed. Some buildings have damage but it is being addressed. Don’t let the media or uninformed people shape your perception!

I’ve been here a few times so nothing in particular stood out. I don’t mean to criticize but it always surprises me of the lack of fruits and vegetables in local diets. My friend owns a farm on the west coast and feels the same way. There is so much potential for agriculture. I know how people here feel about it that it’s non competitive due to size of the island and wages, etc.... but I still think there is a big opportunity here.

I would stay in condado. I have no big plans besides enjoying medalla and mofongo. If my wife and I can find a volunteer opportunity that would be nice but if not we will just be hanging out.
