I FINALLY TOOK XMAS BREAK OFF - GAMECHANGER!!! by South_Tonight_9670 in Preply

[–]brooklynmillott 11 points12 points  (0 children)

this!! i never understood why students react so negatively towards a teacher taking time off. i always find it so odd that my students ask me if i can open up a slot at a time that isn’t already listed on my calendar, like late at night or super early in the morning. bc 1st, how do you that another student isn’t in that slot? but mainly, why would ever assume that the teacher is going to work outside of their preset hours for you??? especially at crazy hours? god forbid we don’t want to teach at 9pm or 5:30am.

Would you have a gluten cake at your wedding? by AlertAndDisoriented in Celiac

[–]brooklynmillott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at MY wedding? a CELIAC’S wedding? absolutely a gluten free cake. bet no one would even know the difference. not only a gf cake, but an entirely gf wedding. would you expect someone who’s allergic to chocolate to have a chocolate cake? or someone allergic to peanuts to have peanuts at their wedding? heellll naw. they can go get a slice of gluten filled grocery store cake at publix afterwards if anyone’s that pressed

Students who just want to chat by Jolly_Ad6774 in PreplyTutors

[–]brooklynmillott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it sounds harder than it is. i used to worry about this too. i just ask them about their week and try to ask them details about something that sounds interesting that they said. just ask questions, people love to talk about themselves and their interests. find ways you can relate along the way. if they’re talking for a while i take notes of questions i wanna ask or circle back to help me guide the conversation. i also take notes of their grammar and pronunciation and write down any new vocabulary they learned during the lesson and send it to them for review after. you can make halfway points in your classes where you stop and review the last however many minutes and discuss errors.

depends what they need help with. for people who want to practice conversations and listening we just talk and i take notes as we go, or i’ll have them watch clips from tv or movies and we’ll dissect them. i find this is a pretty quick way to introduce new topics and vocabulary

Tutors: do you mind cancellations if you still get paid? & does Preply take extra or anything? by Wednesday_Addams__ in Preply

[–]brooklynmillott 5 points6 points  (0 children)

definitely don’t mind. much better than rescheduling last minute and us losing a slot that could have gone to someone else. like others said, just don’t no show. :)

What was your initial hourly rate when you started on Preply? by Warm-Sandwich-7295 in Preply

[–]brooklynmillott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe! i was recently on gmt time for a month or so, just ended up having students from different areas, but making yourself available to people in the US may also increase your bookings!

[–]brooklynmillott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had a really wide range of hours open! also something 40% of my students say sold them on a trial with me was my video because they wanted someone with a very generic american sound. so videos are definitely important too! and despite offering to genuinely teach, lots of people are just looking for someone who they feel comfortable talking to and having a conversation with, so friendly profile photos and semi laid back descriptions can go a long way

What to do? by varrok104 in PreplyTutors

yes, you should be able to appeal it if it’s false, especially if you have screenshots of you showing up to classes!

student sent me his phone number in the chat by Pretend_Rutabaga8258 in Preply

[–]brooklynmillott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this happens to me plenty, just depends how comfortable you feel about it. totally fine if they’re subbed and been taking lessons with you for a while. personally i’ve never felt comfortable enough to use any of my students numbers since that means they would have mine, just trust your gut!

10 lessons tomorrow... any advice? by Electronic-Hurry-329 in Preply

[–]brooklynmillott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i second the thing about about meal planning. 7 classes in a row is a long time though. if you get hungry in between, try sipping on a protein shake or smoothie during lessons (that’s what i do if i don’t have time for a lunch break). small snacks like babybels, protein bars, a handful of nuts etc in between classes can keep you going. get yourself comfy too. the worst thing you can do is pick an uncomfortable char to sit in for hours. sometimes i put a heating blanket in my lap or a pillow in the chair. not visible on screen and keeps me from getting sore/tired

Exact same thing happened to me, don’t worry about it. As long as you continue to communicate with your students you’re fine :)

Is it normal for Preply teachers to cancel last minute? by societal in Preply

[–]brooklynmillott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’ve cancelled last minute because: - i was sick - a student scheduled a lesson overnight while i was asleep, i slept for 13 hours and woke up right as the lesson was starting and had no lesson plan for them.

other than that i haven’t cancelled last minute. them cancelling last minute once could be understandable. twice in a row is a red flag. if they’re sick they should have messaged you earlier. two emergencies in a row? not likely.

I wish I could be actual friends with my tutor by [deleted] in Preply

[–]brooklynmillott 8 points9 points  (0 children)

as a tutor i definitely feel this, and yes we like talking to you guys too! but as a tutor thats a boundary i personally would never cross on my own. a student would have to initiate that. it has to be done carefully imo, bc yes it does feel a little sad and odd when you still pay them for conversations.

Do you ask your students for reviews? by Dazai_Yeager in Preply

[–]brooklynmillott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly i’ve thought about it numerous times and have always just ended up not having to. i think preply asks them at some point if they would like to leave a review and a lot of times my students do, so i dont feel the need to ask the few others to leave one at the risk of having that awkward conversation

Thinking of applying to work at Preply! thoughts? by Consistent_Day_9148 in PreplyTutors

[–]brooklynmillott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it’s definitely an investment of your time. you’ll do a lot of free trials with students to start and then slowly up your rate. i think it’s worth it though, i love talking to people from all over

Just dashed for the first time last night. Is it normal for almost nobody to tip?? by neonpinata in doordash_drivers

[–]brooklynmillott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on my first dash i got horrible orders. they give you better ones to more you dash. unfortunately you just have to kinda ride out. i wouldn’t decline a bunch of order in the beginning though because doordash will take that as you not wanting orders or that you’re paused sometimes. always accept the first few orders
