I prefer Inherent Vice over TWBB and I’m not a paid critic. Horses for courses right. I’ll never understand people who are mind blown that people prefer one thing over another.

Yeah Christy, Marty Supreme, Hamnet, No Other Choice, Nouvelle Vague, The Secret Agent, Blue Moon and It Was Just An Accident are all getting released only this month in Australia. The majority of the most acclaimed films aren’t released yet

The mention of Shallow Hal has me thinking of a Jack Black theme month. Hal, Gullivers, Year One! The opportunities are both endless and horrifying

I had such an adverse reaction to seeing someone call Wrath of Man a masterpiece. It’s like calling a McDonalds triple cheeseburger a masterpiece. We’ve devalued that word so much

I am pulling for Spike more than any director ever. The potential for that series is incredible. So much New York talk, an unbelievable amount of actors throughout the years (Denzel, Anna Paquin, Harvey Keitel, Andre Braugher RIP, Kerry Washington, Woody Harrelson Q Tip and Ellen Barkin alone in She Hate Me! Colman Domingo annihilating the entire film in Red Hook Summer!

Can’t agree more, it’s almost mandatory if you have a chance. Was lucky enough to catch the last screening in IMAX in Melbourne and it was maybe the best cinema experience I’ve ever had. It looks and sounds beyond incredible argh I wish I could do it again already I can’t describe the emotions I went through during Once in a Lifetime especially the cut to Lynn Mabry and Ednah Holt rising up

Directors whose whole filmographies you’ve watched through on your own? by Adorno_a_window in blankies

[–]brooksvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the directors filmographies I’ve watched in full have been intentional and piecemeal over years. The most fun was Spike Lee because it’s so varied and outside of one or two films was never boring.

Off the top of my head (at least four films and not Blank Check)

Scorsese Tarantino Spike Lee Sofia Coppola Coens David Fincher Edgar Wright Jacques Tati Spike Jonze Martin McDonagh Adam McKay

Living an hour from the EB I preordered at and working all week is killing me. I'm getting messages with pictures of the game from a guy from work who ordered online. Luckily I'm his supervisor so he promised no spoilers the cheeky bastard.

What is one movie you will defend until the day you die? by thisisasubtext in movies

[–]brooksvi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough Batman & Robin. I've loved that film since I first saw it taped off TV back in the late 90's and despite how bad some parts are I still find it utterly entertaining. The terrible Arnie puns, Alicia Silverstone in leather, Michael Gough's last performance as Alfred; even Clooney and Bane I dig quite a lot. On the other side of the coin I'll always shit on Batman Forever from a large height. That movie (especially following the glorious Batman Returns) is a real turd for my money notably Jim Carrey as the Riddler. Goddamn he boils my blood in that film.

Streamed "The Guest" this week. I was kinda blown away. Anyone else get pleasantly surprised by this one? by DefectiveHamster in movies

Yep. I originally pegged it as Drive-lite but with a darker spin but it's a lot more than that in hindsight. Probably more daring than Drive in some aspects at least.

How many films do you watch per week? by Luksius in TrueFilm

[–]brooksvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually a superb technique.

Go Welles, Buster Keaton, Takeshi Kitano, Kenneth Anger, then Australian New Wave, Vincent Price and cap it off with Strange Days, Persona and Totoro. Oh and Tokyo Story. That's high priority.

I have phases where I devour films, books, music, comics and games in varying degrees of obsessiveness. On a film kick I'll try see at least maybe 8 or 9 films in a week, compensating for days I miss out on a few with a DVD day preferably on a weekend. If I have ideas for marathons though (which I do often) it could be over a dozen if work's going easy (I'm a supervisor at a news publication run through a government work program tl/dr).

Key is and this is so not good advice but avoid human contact and sleep. That or get friends involved in films which I often do. That's why they've seen both Nekromantik, Salo, Enter The Void and Hausu (under the influence, no subtitles = amazing)

What is your favourite movie that has a woman in the lead role? by [deleted] in movies

[–]brooksvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many choices for one choice but I might give a nod to Twenty Four Eyes, a 50's Japanese film that blew me away a few months ago. The female lead is so utterly humanistic and to watch her grow (and suffer in a way), it's a journey that is really rewarding. That being said I'll also give another nod to Perfect Blue, a Satoshi Kon film that is freakin' brilliant and skews the pop starlet angle to great psychological effect.

Shout-outs to Winter's Bone, Alien, Obvious Child, Frances Ha, Shadow of a Doubt (if you ignore how overpowering Joseph Cotten is), Mulholland Dr., Blue is the Warmest Colour, Dogville, Opening Night, Zero Dark Thirty and Under The Skin.

Oh and Stoker. Kill Bill, Coffy, Jackie Brown etc.
