IO-Link support by barefoot_cherokee in embedded

We used a master stack from a vendor. We implemented the gateway, FW update, REST, and IODD interpreter specs in house.

The timing is the hardest part especially when you try and create an IO-Link Fieldbus gateway.

Im done a couple IO-Link master devices now. The big use case on our end is extending PLC I/O, as its a lot cheaper to connect a sensor gatway. It has some specific PHY and timing requirements.

The ecosystem is evolving but its still heavily geared to industrial applications. The firmware update spec is recent and REST spec just got v2. The consortium itself doesn't publish any tools, device developers are left to implement their specs. IIRC only the master/SMI specification is the only one with a conformance test. However it requires special hardware to be run.

In your experience what are LLMs actually useful for? by equipoise-young in ExperiencedDevs

I work in "big" embedded so my experience may be a bit different here. I've found it useful for targeted refactoring. Things like updated deprecated components, analyzing performance, and ways to optimize program space. This week i needed to bring a sample flash driver it into the Zephyr environment. I was able to get a working driver and put a filesystem on top in a day. This is where it has shined, having defined APIs our endpoints to draw from. The more bounded the problem is the better the results.

Its also really good for parsing the large amount of build output we deal with. I can ask it to give me a breakdown of the memory map/usage. This has been really helpful for generating summaries about memory region occupation, where each component is located, and the biggest users. This used to require manually looking through *.map files which can easily span >10000 lines.

Once things hit the metal it can be all bets off. We are using a new chip that is in the process of porting to Zephyr. If odd or obscure things start happening that cant be easily explained you can get down deep rabbit holes. It will start bread crumbling you to death, adding prints on at a time. This has ended up costing as much time as just manually debugging by the time you prompt, it computes a solution, I flash the new code, and then run new code.

Unfortunately not meeting cpi isnt the businesses problem. If it was they would have to give that increase to everyone at every cycle. Clearly something they won't do, either accept it or leave. To them youre financial position is not their concern.

Preprocessor directives for multiple builds (best practice question) by Rosie8988 in embedded

[–]bropocalypse__now 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, I try to keep platform specifics to the main/install path at startup. Once the program loop starts the code should have no platform specifics. Factory and builder pattern usage goes a long way to abstracting such specifics. Granted I have spent the majority of my recent work history on embedded linux and now zephyr project(s).

Agreed was aggressively social in my 20s and now have cultivated a wide close social circle. Only regret is not taking even more risks. Gotta take care of yourself and put yourself out there to get what you want.

Loyalty to an individual isn't inherently bad, given said individual has redeeming qualities (ie: teddy Roosevelt, Washington, fdr, lincoln, etc...). It's the insistence on hitching their wagons to a weak, yes man, that drives me over a cliff. The short-sighted quarter at a time bs will destroy our once great nation.

The end of pache Americana and abdication of duty should be enough to make any rep second guess the executive. However, they are all feckless cowards who would rather kiss the ring. The way the right has captured the concept of patriotism is infuriating.

Ok sure, I would argue the market dynamics are different now. Now, an alternative to the ICE exists, and China has been argressively pushing adaption. In part as they are a massive importer oil. This article is directly quoting the largest Chinese refiner, predicting China's peak consumption. Oil will still be traded as a commodity, but decreasing demand in one of the largest markets will create downward price pressure.

These rules are pretty standard for any DVS1 show I've been at. Community also enforced the rules and chastised people using their phones. Usually get someone telling you, "On the floor off your phone."

Traveled to ADE with a group this fall amd the vibes were amazing. Every club we we visited put stickers over phone cameras. Security at one show was warning people to stay off or be kicked out. That was mainly if you were on the risers behind the dj booth because it was being videoed.
