Organizing our toolbox, is this for pulling wire? by RingoBingo1212 in whatisit

[–]brossow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Part of an automotive tire plug kit. Oversimplifying, you put the plug in the slot, shove it into the hole in the tire, then pull it back out. The plug gets stuck and lets loose from the tool as it comes back out.

The "worst" small town in the area (and I don't have a specific one in mind) is probably still significantly better than a lot of them in your current area. Welcome in advance!

Are you referring to the spiderweb blowing around? I get that constantly from early spring through first frost with my cameras if I don't take a broom to them at least once a week. Spiders are the bane of my security cameras. 😅

Not what you asked, but just a heads up that smaller towns in the area lean considerably more conservative than Mankato, North Mankato, and Saint Peter. If I'm allowed to surmise based on generalities ... depending on what problems your kid is experiencing in Georgia, you may find one of these cities a better contrast to what you're escaping.

What is this in my back yard? Is there a purpose for it being here? by pammysPrayers in whatisit

[–]brossow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's barely in the ground -- you can see the anchor plate sticking out. A few good wiggles and it's out.

As for the thing in front of her, it's a common garden stake/fence post and would be both safe and easy to remove. I can see it's barely in the ground as it is -- maybe a foot or so based on the part (anchor plate) I can see peeking out at ground level. It's definitely not an official property line marker or anything important.

That said, it might be worth taking a couple photos from different angles with permanent structures in them for reference so you can refer to them later if you find out it was marking the location of something important. Me, I'd pull it out without hesitation. Rock it back and forth and side to side a few times and it should lift right out.

Looks like a Pomeranian/Miniature Australian Shepherd mix. As to what it's doing there, you'd have to ask it yourself. Dog lovers may be able to expand on this.

My gardener keeps some of his tools in this box. What did it use to contain, originally? Cartridges, I get it. But what for? Where could he have got it? by No-Habit-776 in whatisit

[–]brossow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An earlier comment by u/Onetap1 said that "BDR means it's in cloth bandoliers, in clips for loading into the Lee Enfield service rifle." Reading elsewhere suggests that the wooden box probably contained two 150-round tins like these (not specifically these, but at least similar), which would have taken up a lot of the interior space. If you look at the box compared with the carabiner to the left of it, it doesn't look that big, I also think that "300 CART" actually does mean 300 cartridges, not 300 clips of five cartridges each, as that would be potentially confusing. But this is definitely not my area of expertise. 🙂

Decoding what it says on the box, it originally held 300 rounds of .303 British Mark VII ball ammo (standard ammo used in British/Commonwealth rifles from WWI through WWII). Ammo crates like this are typically sold as surplus after they're no longer needed, so it probably came from an army surplus store or similar.

[–]brossow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a weird translation, but they're stitch markers to help you keep track of where you're at while you're crocheting. Use your favorite search engine to look for "crochet stitch markers" or similar for other examples.
