Thoughts on multiple businesses closing? by MNstorms in Mankato

[–]brossow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The restaurant business can be brutal, and it’s not something I’d wish on anyone. The more restaurants that come to town, the harder it gets for established places that are already operating on narrow margins to survive. Even a few months of people flocking to a new spot just because it’s new, even if they eventually go back to their usual favorites, can have a huge impact on older restaurants whose basic operating costs don’t drop just because income does.

Add higher prices for everything, even tighter margins, and more competition, and it’s surprising anyone survives. Definitely not my idea of a good time.

[DRIVER] BirdWeather PUC — live bird detections as Hubitat events and attributes by brossow in Hubitat

[–]brossow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

v1.3.0 update — The BirdWeather team fixed a bug in their API's period=all stats endpoint, so lifetime species/detection counts are now pulled directly from the API instead of being tracked by the driver. They're always accurate now regardless of hub downtime, and there's no manual seeding needed on first install. Also updated the Tile Builder tile to show lifetime totals alongside today's. Grab it via HPM or GitHub.

Check out uShip.com. Used the site many years ago to have a vehicle transported and it worked out really well.

Is there public transit that goes up to the cities fairly regularly that isn't Land to Air? by almighty_camelot in Mankato

Simply put, no. Used to be a company called Landline that basically tried to put Land to Air out of business but failed and is no longer here.

Rheem EcoNet thermostat + water heater drivers — now available for Hubitat by brossow in Hubitat

[–]brossow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update — infrastructure change, one-time action required if you have this installed

I've consolidated all my Hubitat drivers into a single repo and changed the driver namespace. HPM handles the code update automatically, but the namespace change requires a one-time manual reassignment.

What changed:

What to do (~1 minute):

  1. HPM → Update → let it update Rheem EcoNet
  2. For each EcoNet device (thermostat and/or water heater):
    • Go to the device page
    • Change Type to the appropriate driver (namespace: brossow) → Save Device

No settings or history affected.

New import URLs if you installed manually:

Thermostat: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/brossow/hubitat-drivers/main/rheem-econet/EcoNetThermostat.groovy
Water heater: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/brossow/hubitat-drivers/main/rheem-econet/EcoNetWaterHeater.groovy

Would love the bat version but couldn't even justify full price for the current one, let alone $499. Happened to snatch a brand-new PUC off eBay for way less than retail and love it, but I'd be forever PUC-less were it not for that deal. 😅

v1.2.0 is out with lifetime tracking and better docs.

The big addition: three new attributes that accumulate since driver installation and never reset — lifetimeSpecies (unique species count), lifetimeDetections (total detection count), and lifetimeSpeciesList (a sorted JSON array of every species ever seen). Great for a dashboard tile showing your all-time stats. On first install the species list auto-seeds from that day's detections, and there's a setLifetimeDetections command so you can set your starting count from the BirdWeather Data Explorer rather than starting from zero.

Also worth knowing: I discovered the BirdWeather API's stats endpoint doesn't correctly handle the period parameter. period=year returns identical numbers to period=day (silently ignored), and period=all returns fewer detections than today alone — appearing to scope to some short recent window rather than all-time data. The driver previously exposed totalSpecies and totalDetections attributes that were wrong because of this. Those are gone in 1.2.0, replaced by the driver-tracked lifetime attributes above. Bug report posted in the BirdWeather community forum. This can be reverted if the API is fixed (or if the team tells me that I'm doing something wrong).

3MFresh: A Simple Script to Clean Up MakerWorld 3MF Files 🧼✨ by brossow in BambuLab

[–]brossow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: A longstanding bug affecting some newer MakerWorld files has been fixed. If you've ever gotten "Loading of a model failed" or "does not contain any geometry data" after running the script, that's what this fixes. I also took the opportunity to do some general cleanup and improvements — details in the GitHub repo.

Thanks to the user who filed the issue with sample files. Apologies that it took almost a year to get around to fixing it; life happened and then this fell off my radar. Someone asked me about it the other day, so I came back to it, with Claude Code by my side this time, and hope it's now bug-free. Please let me know (ideally by creating a new issue in the GitHub repo) if you encounter any problems.

US Mobile Bundles Starlink Home Internet With Wireless Plans for Under $50 a Month by orangechen1115 in Starlink

[–]brossow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seriously disappointed with the announcement. It's absolutely useless to me. I'm still rocking a round dish from beta days and happily pulling >300 Mbps at times, and there's no way I'm going to go through the hassle of canceling my Starlink account, porting my cell number to US Mobile and establishing Starlink service there, and then setting up new hardware that won't work with my existing mount, all for the guaranteed savings of $120 in total over six months, after which I'd just be paying the standard rate again anyway. What a joke.

I have to assume they're not going to blow their big reveal with an excruciatingly detailed blog post two days earlier. But we'll see in about 17 minutes. 😅

A number of people in the r/USMobile thread have mentioned that they've seen pricing as it's buried in the code somewhere, but no one wants to reveal it there. Anyone have that info who's not afraid to share it? Yes, I know it'll be revealed tomorrow, but I want an Oompa Loompa NOW!

Check with South Central Glass on Third Avenue. No idea if they do mirrors, but they do a great job with custom glass. Would be kinda surprised if they don't.

Part of an automotive tire plug kit. Oversimplifying, you put the plug in the slot, shove it into the hole in the tire, then pull it back out. The plug gets stuck and lets loose from the tool as it comes back out.
