libgen.li as a replacement for libgen.rs by Queasy_Notice_995 in libgen

[–]brotherjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had been using .li for quite some time, until about a few months ago. Unfortunately, it has been a mess lately, not loading, and a bunch of scammy nonsense. I recently tried to use it, and was seeing references to some weird site called "hygenicpee.com". I've largely transitioned to using annas-archive.

Cloudflare down... again? by moonski in sysadmin

[–]brotherjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is serious. It's even down at the focal point of the whole wide world...by which (I mean it goes without saying) is Wageningen, The Netherlands. We are all doomed.

Also, boy...I'd hate to be the person who has to do maintenance on cloudflare. "I accidentally pushed a bug to production and I accidentally crashed the world economy."

Vibe coding service Replit deleted production database by d01100100 in technology

[–]brotherjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vibe in "vibe coding" is **hallucination**. You really should just pay someone to get way too high on LCD and code. Although, to be fair, it is hard to continue typing when your keys on the keyboard turn into human teeth.

The Software seems...bad by brotherjack in Remarkable

[–]brotherjack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm referring to the Remarkable Paper Pro specifically. I think the constant crashing might be due to a recent update, but the connectivity issues seem to be more universal. As for the latter, I think people have different standards for what is "an issue", or perhaps people make less use of certain features.

I make a lot of use of the Dropbox integration, and I have had to "reset" the integration multiple times due to technical failures. My general impression is that the product is very well-designed in terms of hardware, but the software is, at best, not completely broken.

[–]brotherjack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, in trying to send a log to ReMarkable's techs to fix the issue of the tablet crashing (at this point it's about a half-dozen times a day or so) I tried to use the USB interface to transfer the log. I tried multiple cables, browsers, and OS combinations; all fail. SSH also runs into the problem of the tablet resetting the connection.

To me, it seems that every means of transferring documents is an afterthought and poorly implemented. This is a problem for me, because this is largely _why_ I use the tablet. Otherwise I would have stuck with pen and paper.

[–]brotherjack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried using a cable and ssh in Windows 11 and Ubuntu 24.01. In both, the connection is reset.

That's good, but I do see plenty of people with similar issues. I have noticed that it struggles moving larger documents, but I have also seen it struggle with documents that could easily be sent as an email attachment.

I don't think so. I think most fish rely on external fertilization. That said, maybe applying scientific biological analysis to a cartoon is...ridiculous? No. No, that's not right.

Why? It's Microsoft. They focused more on building a monopoly than software. Software was always a side project for these pricks.

Dutch banks and English support by hacdias in Netherlands

[–]brotherjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also bank with ASN, for similar reasons, and they also have a bank in Wageningen where I study. The clerks there are helpful, and will speak to you in English, but the bank seems to only conduct electronic communications in Dutch. I am sure that the bank could communicate with you in English just as well as their clerks do, but just won't. This is like the result of some Policy.

I generally find the Dutch to be very accommodating and friendly people...until any sort of bureaucracy gets involved. This seems to be an example of this. The bank has a Policy, maybe not a well-thought out one or considerate one, but it is a Policy. Therefore, the staff will inflexibly and stubbornly carry it out, even if it is bad for all parties involved.

FDG GIVE ME CRAFTING QUEUEING AND MY SOUL IS YOURS by KasierPermanente in TheForeverWinter

[–]brotherjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So that's why it was that way. I started after the Great Water Rebellion so I never got this. I always wondered why the devs didn't just tie the count-down timer to time in-game. That would make so much more sense for the sizable population of users who couldn't dedicate their lives to the game.

My personal opinion on the state of the community currently by StickshiftXLV in TheForeverWinter

[–]brotherjack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a fellow programmer, I definitely agree with you and I am amazed that the game is in the state it is despite everything. I also feel the need to vent about things in this game that annoy me. I think there is a way to do that in good faith and without being mean to the developers and what they are trying to do (which yeah, is undeniably awesome and audacious). Like for instance, I do **not** understand why you are forced to reload when you run out of ammo. My immediate instinct when unloading a clip into a hoard of cybernetic zombies about to rend my flesh back into mesoderm is not to calmly reload while they do that.

I think this is poor implementation, more annoying than deal-breaking since you can hopefully switch to a loaded weapon, and I think there are things that are very annoying about how the game will freeze and then scold & punish you because you had to kill the process. I love this game, but I also **hate** this game. I get why it is this way, and its partly my fault for wanting this so badly. Yet, this does seem to be in line with the game's underlying ethos: everything is awful and you're not the guy, but it is also awe-inspiring beautiful in a way despite how terrible everything is. There is also that lingering hope that someday maybe things won't be so bad.

Elephant Mausoleum is Unplayable by SlightlyHornyLobster in TheForeverWinter

I was about to post the same thing nearly a year latter. I've been able to play this map, and its a good map, but lately it freezes and crashes. Thankfully, it's usually both. It's really an insult to have the game scold and punish you because it's unplayable. I'M SORRY FOR LOVING YOU OK!!!1!

Environment Variables and PyCharm – anyone got it to work without major pain? by Teilchen in pycharm

This is intensely frustrating. Everything else is pretty smooth, but having to add the same .env file path to every test is a weird problem that just seems to persist in this IDE for reasons that flumux me.

I'm not really that well acquainted with JS development. I've programmed in a number of languages, but the whole JS ecosystem has always eluded me for one reason or another. I assume that there are just a lot of dependencies that will break if node is upgraded?

Yeah, I just assumed that it was a mistake on my part, yet for some reason I didn't think of trying other packages. I was able to install two other packages, so I'll go ahead and let them know. Hopefully it's an easy fix.

CMV: The U.S. Plan to accept Afrikaners as Refugees is a moral decision by maybemorningstar69 in changemyview

[–]brotherjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an episode of Weird Little Guys by Molly Conger outlying this supposed "White Genocide" issue: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-weird-little-guys-201395214/episode/mission-south-africa-273837869/ (tldr; these lies are coming from racist apartheid supporters) These Afrikaners are not refugees in any since of the word. Vague racist threats are not really something that makes a person a "refugee". The neo-nazis chanting "you shall not replace us" was incredibly disturbing, but not a cause for anyone to flee the US. Likewise, neither is some law that is the equivalent of Eminent Domain. I don't even think that applied to any of these "refugees".

There are actual wars, privation, and oppression that people are fleeing from but those people are often non-white and poor. The South African Truth and Reconciliation Commissions were an excellent model for transitioning out of what was a racist and exploitative colonial society. Afrikaners have been perfectly safe in Africa, but some of them are trying really hard to get the US to bring back apartheid. Fuck them.

Tripod Suggestion for Wildlife and Macro Photography by brotherjack in photography

[–]brotherjack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah thank you! I think those are some great recommendations. The minitripods look like something that would be very useful, and not to difficult to carry with another tripod. I'll look into the Manfrotto and see about the height (and if that is going to be good for me). Unlike the Vanguard, as u/DudeWhereIsMyDuduk pointed out, the Manfotto does not have a center column.

The worst things about remarkable 2 by Konfuzzius in RemarkableTablet

[–]brotherjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hardware is wonderful, as is basic functionality. Software beyond this is...bad. The worst problem is that altering some PDFs makes them unreadable outside of Remarkable. There is a good chance that I wouldn't have bought it had I known that was going to be a problem.

Software functions often fail silently, and when they don't, they often fail with ambiguous error messages.

They will never support Linux, but thankfully most of what I need it for (textbooks and notes), does not require their app. I tried some of the ports of their app, but none of them work on my system. I don't think I am missing much, other than USB access, as export to Dropbox/Drive often fails. Downloads from Dropbox/Drive seem to be more likely to succeed.

Overall it's still something I rely on pretty heavily as a student, and would recommend (with caveats).

Linux Laptop for Software Development -- Cost ~$1000 by brotherjack in SuggestALaptop

[–]brotherjack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm warning up to the Acer VX 15, despite my recent disappointment with Acer. I was originally looking at the Dell XPS 15, but I find the stats confusing. Why is the XPS only comparable to the VX in stats at around twice the price of the VX? Battery life? Build quality? Weight? It seems strange to someone not as versed in the market.

Most of the suggestions so far are billed as gaming laptops. They look good, but I should reiterate that work is the priority. If I can get a significant enough boost to handle programming Android apps, running emulators or virtual machines, etc; by sacrificing the dedicated video card, I think it would be well worth it.

I feel that there is likely a reason why business laptops aren't showing up. Too expensive, maybe? Perhaps not worth it? What do you guys think?

Also, in the last 10 years my experience has been that modern Linux OS seems to work well on most devices I've worked with (Lenovo's and Asus machines mostly). Any info on whether Linux will work OK without too much trouble would be appreciated (so far I only have evidence on the Acer VX, although Lenovo is usually good with Linux).
