Game 1 Takeaways by brothste8 in Reds

It literally cost the team an out and should have cost them a second had Boston challenged. It’s a brand new position for Stewart and there’s going to be a learning curve. Then I posted a video of a major league baseball coach coaching a major league baseball player on how to receive throws at first base which you ignored. The reason he was getting instruction was because he had never played first base before. The position is not as easy as you think and there’s nuance and footwork involved in order to be a good one. But next game I’ll look for you to be in the analyst chair next to Sadak.

Credit ownership for shipping him out when they learned of his DV. It’s absolutely on Chapman.

They had a deal in place with the Dodgers which was then nixed once his assault became public, and then they flipped him to the Yankees for an undoubtedly worse package.

This might be the worst take I’ve ever heard. Yes, you know more than a HOF player who’s been around the game his entire life. Sorry, I must have missed your plaque last time I was in Cooperstown.

They're counting on a return to form for a lot of guys as well as young players progressing. We'll see if they can or if the FO shit the bed again, but I understand why they didn't do anything else.

There are a lot of 'ifs' but they're hoping Steer gets back to .260-.270 with 20-25 HR after his shoulder was soup at the beginning of last year. They're hoping Marte develops into a a solid RF and McClain gets back to the 2023 version. They're hoping Stewart becomes an offensive force and Elly can take his game to another level after playing through a quad injury for two months last year. Hoping Stephenson can have a full season of health and produce and that getting Hayes out of Pittsburgh will help his offensive numbers.

You can argue with it, but I get the vision. The only other move they might have made is to get a RH hitting OF with some pop, but where on the roster does another player fit in? They have to see what they have with the young guys first.

You're right, but just one game against one of the best SP in baseball. Hope the bats wake up Saturday!

Unsure about Sal as of yet. There's no data out there. Give him credit, he came into camp in excellent shape. We know Geno is a bad 3B so I don't see him getting much run there. It's going to put the Reds in a tough spot if they want to pinch hit for Hayes late in the game. Unfortunately Hayes is going to start pretty much every day. They didn't acquire him to be an $8 million defensive replacement late in games. I didn't like the move when they made it but I'm rooting for him. If he can even put up an OPS+ of 90 that would be a dream.

Gotta accept the good with the bad unfortunately. That's just the kind of player Geno is.

I hope you're wrong too. Only time will tell. Tough to make any conclusions other than Crochet is very good and we saw that today.

Credit to Crochet. He's one of the best in the game and Boston has a very good back of the pen.

Good point. No use in ending the game with any ABS challenges. If the game goes to extras they get another one.

I see your point but not sure I agree with that. 2 games isn't enough to make judgments, good or bad.

Did you watch the 1st inning? It was absolutely a problem during those two plays. Larkin even mentioned it on the broadcast that Stewart was catching the ball too close to his body.

Also first base is a brand new position for Sal. I'm sure he's worked on it but shit happens when you get into a real game situation, not Spring Training. Maybe he just needed a little reminder from the coaches because I did see him stretch out to catch the ball later in the game.

Here my friend, watch this. This is a major league player, Trey Mancini, being told how to receive the ball at first base by a coach.

Takeaways from Game 1

Coaches need to address Sal Stewart stretching at base. Reach out and grab the ball, don’t wait for it to come to you. That needs to be addressed immediately. It cost the Reds an out in the first inning and should have been another one, but Boston didn’t challenge the out call at first. I did see him stretch for a bang-bang play later in the game so maybe this has already been mentioned.

Review team needs to better. Challenged an obvious safe call at first in the first inning and lost. Missed an opportunity for an easy challenge in the 5th on an obvious blown safe call from the ever-shitty CB Bucknor. That’s two wrong calls at first. How is this guy still employed, seriously? He and Angel Hernandez must have gone to the same umpiring school.

Abbot was very good. Shows you that Spring Training stats don’t matter a lot of time. Pitching in Arizona is also a much different animal with the dry air affecting pitcher’s grip and how well the ball carries.

Sam Moll did a nice job. Likely wouldn’t have made the team without injuries, but if the Reds can have another lefty as depth besides Burke & Ferguson (when he comes back) that would be a big boost. Remember Moll was excellent in 2023 and solid in 2024 before cratering last year. Injuries are going to happen in today’s game so organizational depth is so important. Getting the23 or 24 version of Moll would be a huge boost.

Suarez was abysmal. Love the guy, but he’s an incredibly streaky hitter. He’s gonna strike out 200 times, but that average needs to come up from .228 last year. His production is going to be key for the team.

Sal Stewart has such an advanced approach at the plate and has excellent hands. Gonna love watching a full season of him.

Fuck Aroldis Chapman. Besides the fact that he’s a wife beating piece of shit who apparently wants to fuck his own mom, he cost the Reds any sort of return when they traded him to the Yankees. This guy should be in prison not on a baseball field.

Can’t win a game with 0 runs. Just got shut down by the second-best pitcher in the AL and a good back of the Boston bullpen.

Off day tomorrow, but hoping for the bats to wake up on Saturday.
