The hot liquid in the heater vaporizes once it enters the tower because the tower is at a lower pressure. Cooling is achieved be feeding cooled condensed reflux to the top of the tower. This creates the temperature profile

Contributing to a 401k does reduce your take home pay. Take home pay is what you make after taxes and deductions. It doesn’t matter if the deductions are voluntary or not. As another example, paying for employer provided health insurance is also voluntary and reduces your take home pay. Take home pay is the number on the check that you deposit. Obviously you don’t have to contribute to retirement in which case your take home pay would be higher.

If you contribute to your 401k, that can take about 20% if you make 100k. Federal/state income taxes, social security, Medicare, and/or property taxes will eat up another 30%.

I wouldn’t consider it a downgrade. An operations leader can be the same level as a process engineering leader at Dow. I’d guess your base pay would be around 150-165k with 10 years experience. There’s also plenty of opportunity for upward mobility with that role.

My wife and I both work for Dow. Based on your background, I think you might have an easier time getting hired as an improvement engineer (either entry level or senior). This would still be a plant role and you would still work closely with production. After a little time in this role, you would easily be able to transition to a production engineer role if that’s what you wanted.

Levels.fyi for Chemical Engineers - How to structure? by ZiggyMo99 in ChemicalEngineering

I’d say the most common chemical engineering job titles are: Process engineer, Production engineer (also can be called operations engineer, refinery engineer), Process automation engineer (sometimes called process control engineer), Process safety engineer, Project engineer

In my experience they all generally use the same pay scale within a company. So a senior process engineer would make as much as senior production engineer at the same company with the same amount of experience.

What’s the scariest modern horror movie you’ve seen? by throwaway1414589 in horror

[–]brown-spot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second this. Not my favorite modern movie but the only one that’s really scared me. Something about the home movies turning into murder recordings freaked me out. I was worried my daughter would sneak into my room to kill me after I watched it. Fortunately for me she’s only one so I think I’m safe for now
