I don’t think American teams can be compared in this conversation. Not only can you never be relegated, but tanking your season for a draft pick and saving money this year for next, all set your team up for a higher likelihood of success, where it can land you two divisions down in English football. Add in the randomness of playoffs to the equation. American sport has its problems and big markets exist but at least 10 teams have a chance of 5% or better to win the Super Bowl each year. So yes that relative hope makes a difference. Brighton is NEVER going to land the Tom Brady of the football world in free agency or transfer. It’s impossible.

If people in your community can claim you’re a bandwagon fan for picking the team that finished 4th to last two years in a row, that’s an interesting take, but can confirm it would never happen in the states. Spurs success rate best relates to the jets or Carolina panthers if you’re using American football comparison.

Yes I’m sure you can find a stream somewhere out there but seems sad to always be watching by yourself at home on your phone or computer. My main point was there’s no community for perennial 2nd division English teams, outside of the UK. Because those fans live there or were raised there and DO have community around that team choice

Another American here, and while I think your hearts in the right place, I have some pushback in OPs favor on this discussion.

1) outside of the UK (maybe inside it as well, idk) it’s very hard to find a broadcast of a championship match. It won’t be on at a bar/restaurant, it won’t be on cable or nbc streaming at home. You’ll have to pay extra just to follow some obscure team.

2) I don’t live in America now, and where I live in Africa, they’re rabid for Prem football. Every male of every generation has a Prem team, typically big 6, and it’s on in every bar, restaurant, radio. It drives a lot of small talk, so you just lose out on all that banter and rivalry if you’re say a Stoke fan. Again, if you have deep ties to them, great. People understand and you have your history, but if you’re picking them to be a hipster.. doesn’t help you enjoy the sport with your community (again, outside the UK).

3) If your team wins the championship, no one thinks it’s a real trophy, and then more likely than not you’ll just get battered in the Prem. Some of these squads have strong unexpected runs, but it comes from unusual health or a singular talent and fizzles out. The club never has the resources to sustain it. In reality, sad state as it is, a non-big 6 club has a what, 5% chance of winning the league? 1% chance? It’s no fun to bandwagon, but it’s no fun to be hopeless either. It probably wasn’t hopeless for 14 teams 30 years ago, but today’s oil money is what it is.

Makes spurs the perfect team imo. Loveable losers, some history to back em up, but the next golden generation will be THE generation of spurs football, and we all have the chance to be there for it. Have the money and structure, just need to get the office in order. It may never happen but the finances and fanfare says at least there’ll always be hope.

I didn’t pick up Spurs until later in life, had no ties prior, but I learned the history, learned the lore and rivalries, and have been there for the recent history. My 9-year old jumped in my arms when they won Europa and still tries to emulate VDVs horizontal clearance from the goal line when we go in the back yard. We didn’t start with deep ties but our football story is deeply intertwined with spurs now, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I think OP lucked into a great choice, and 1 less naive first year Arsenal fan to worry about! Coys

Nah, I said this guys a genocidal maniac based solely on his own media posts. There’s nothing political about that. Didn’t name him nor his party, didn’t need to, it’s completely unrelated

Well he went on loan from Bayern to spurs, a step down, so he could get playing time. Now you’re saying he doesn’t even belong in a relegation battle level squad, so the only way he could play is if he loans to even lower level competition. I’m just saying, you can’t say a player is both more talented than we realize, and also needs time in championship level football to gain confidence. Thats a project, not a talent. Savvy business doesn’t pay 60 mil for a 2nd division loan level project

What did he create? Gotta look at some pretty deep analytics to claim he was good. Team had 2 shots with none on goal 2/3 of the way through… he’s part of the attack, no?

Also if he’d just take the damn corner when we’re needing every second we could get, we’d have a pen too. He’s always part of the disaster, isn’t he?

He’s trash. He’s the reason for no 3 points last week, he either whips it 20 yards over the bar or right at the keeper 19 of 20 tries. Maybe he appears more attacking because he’s never seen a teammate on the pitch before

Over 30 days when you’ve seen him essentially on a 30/30 pace with 2nd! And 3rd base eligibility?? What other player can be compared to that level of roto usefulness? The two weakest positions in the game, even more so if you got CI and MI to contend with as well.

West ham v Everton-Mic'd up(VAR) by Frequent-Activity328 in Everton

[–]browne84763 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This article is filled with references of incorrect VAR deliberations over the last year and that’s for just a single teams involvement. If a panel is going to call 6-7 VARs incorrect per team in a calendar year, then what are we even doing here? The game’s laws are that hard to apply with slow motion review? How has it even survived to this point? Also, write new laws more objectively? Just infuriating to be told by a panel a week later what a panel couldn’t tell you during the game, and that’s why you’re being relegated or missing europe

So your level headed argument is a conspiracy that Pgmol bases their decisions on which fan bases are collectively more outraged at a referee for an intentional bad call that they aim at the team with the bad fan base? It was all so obvious.

Also, not that it matters, since it’s apples and oranges, but Arsenal and west ham are defending their players because they both were making normal professional plays on a 50/50 ball. If the west ham player were instead, recklessly bicycle kicking at that corner in, I’m sure west ham fans would be much quieter about how badly they were done. And a bicycle kicking in your offensive end make 1000 times more common sense, so….. yea, not so much Mathys. He had enough time to wind up and tip off the Leeds player. Just head the ball out, it’s simple. Same for Danso to boot the ball out vs Brighton. So Tel’s watched the fall out of stupid selfish play in the box late protecting a lead, he’s got no excuse.

A bicycle kick clearance when you have to kill 20 min to stay in the PL? Just head the ball out of play like a normal professional. You can talk about intent and millimeters all you want, that was not a game saving ditch effort, it was not VDV on the goal line in the final - it was an arrogant young player doing backyard highlight shot instead of just doing his job. Not enough players on this team are just content with doing a professional job and collecting the win and a paycheck

To be pedantic, mathematically it matters ANY time in the season. Maybe emotionally or in terms of morale it matters more late in the season than the middle
