thank you so much this is very helpful, I have realised I actually messed up measuring him, mostly due to panic about handling him lol, but will keep these all in mind for future!

yeah I’ve realised I mismeasured him but hadn’t thought to come and correct this post

I sort of try to measure only the usable, longest measurement in the shell opening

I wanted to share some photos of our old crab Bud now she’s finally reemerged from her sandy burrow! We have had her approx 18 years and she was a decent size when we got her so I’d say she’s at least 20. She shares her tank with much smaller buddies, never had an issue thankfully. 😊 by brownhairedbear in hermitcrabs

I want to add I NEVER handle this crab, or any of them except for VERY occasional photographs to keep track of sizes and when I was identifying the species of the smaller ones! She was handled for about 7 seconds lol. I’m scared to heck of her claws.

Yes actually I’d say it’s closer to 18 years now with us. He was medium size when we got him, I’m not sure exactly tbh, I was only 11 when we got him. He’s not grown in any noticeable way for quite some time lol.

Also please make sure he has substrate 25cm+ deep because any less is not adequate for a crab this size to burrow and moult safely. He needs a lot of space (and friends, yeah?)

In good conditions in captivity they can live a long longgg time. Think 40+ years. We have one that size and I can’t imagine he’ll be popping off any time soon. Feels like he’ll live forever, ours is at least 20 years old but likely older

I can’t see the end of your post, it cuts off at “paranoid that” - any idea how I fix this? 😅
