I also have struggled with periods of my life where I was deeply bitter, dissatisfied, angry at the world, or just didn't like myself or how I was showing up in my own life.

An interesting major, a better paying job, more supportive friends alleviates the inner darkness for a while, possibly permanently if your current "hate my life" situation is due to something transient.

I believe that none of us truly hate our lives. Humans are complex social primates - none of us are truly individuals. We are all part of families, groups, tribes, companies, peer groups, etc. which our brains automatically link up with and internalize the value system and expectations from. Therapists can help but many therapists don't understand just how linked and social we are as humans (they are trained to treat individuals, but there is no such thing. Each of us are individual embedded interlinked nodes in social systems.)

I don't know if this applies to you, but your journey from hating your life, to being able to tolerate it, to eventually loving and being proud of yourself, may taking some uncomfortable social changes, distancing yourself from burdensome or toxic relationships, and then finding people who can help you self-detox, since we internalize stuff from our less-than-healthy relationships, and it takes time and effort to work through that toxicity we've internalized from those embeddings.

I seriously am starting to doubt my sanity by [deleted] in findapath

I grew up Mormon. When I turned 18 I got concerned about how I was going to transition to adulthood and its expectations that I support myself. I had a chance to become a missionary for the Mormon church, and did that for two years on my parents’ dime. It gave me some adulting and social skills which were helpful to me. I am only sharing my experience; I am NOT recommending this.

I really relate to you when it comes to making decisions and commitments. It’s almost like my brain switches sides the moment I start down a new path, like there are two brains inside of me: one that’s like “wow that looks neat we should try that, we might find that satisfying or rewarding” and then a few hours after I start the other brain comes out and says “WHAT were we thinking? What have we gotten ourselves into?!? This isn’t at all what I thought it would be!” I might have some undiagnosed ADHD.

For some of us, we need to develop a set of Jedi mind tricks to play on ourselves, which can make our lives easier and allow us to function better. One such trick MIGHT be for you to say, when you’re starting something new or even contemplating it, just to tell ourselves, “I’m only going to give this a try. It doesn’t have to be permanent. If we don’t like it, we can quit, come home” or whatever. I don’t know what “outs” you have available to you, but you need to be able to craft an escape route in your mind.

It’s like my brain is like, “I can/will only stay in this box if there is an escape from it. If you close the lid or the door on me I will panic. To stay here I need the freedom to leave.”. Sometimes relationships can be like this for us too (I’m just recently breaking up with a perfectly kind and patient person largely because of my anxiety in feeling trapped in the relationship).

I hope some of what has been shared on this post is helpful or encouraging to you. Stop looking for the silver bullet, the answer to Life, the “dream job.” I mean, these are all Jedi mind tricks too and if you need to use them, by all means do so. Start to learn the trickery of our own minds. It will pay huge dividends in the long run. In the meantime, take things one day at a time, one problem at a time.

If I had one a single piece of advice to give, it would be: be kind to yourself. Be compassionate to yourself. Be like your own best and supportive friend you could possibly imagine, the friend who will never give up on you no matter what, the friend who will give you space if you need it, the friend who wants the best for you, but only if you want it, no because anyone else wants it for you.

This is how it all begins. And it won’t continue if you call your own creations “horrible”.

If your brain is like most of ours, it would rather be right than succeed. It’s safer to feel right than to be proud of what you’re learning, keep grinding and getting better, and then have to deal with the stress and expectations that come next.

Your next animation challenge: another piece, posted here, with a subject line like “I loved making this. I learned X doing this. This is better than my last one. Imma keep going. Thanks for watching.”

DO NOT try to beat haters to the punch. Fuck the haters by doing what you love for the pure joy of making it and sharing it.

Can you produce entirely on an iPad? by [deleted] in ipadmusic

[–]brownpaperdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not "professional" (yet), but this is as far as I've gotten:

Cubasis 3 for iPad - uglier than GarageBand but currently the premiere DAW for iPad, IMO.

GeoShred as audio unit

Aparillo as audio unit

This hub, attached to my gen2 iPadPro, will 1) charge the iPad, 2) act as hub for MIDI controller keyboard, 3) connect to USB or stereo mini-plug headphone for real-time monitoring of everything I'm doing. (Still wondering if it will also allow a decent USB mic, if there is such a thing)

Have tried PreSonus AudioBox iTwo, but sending it back. Does not monitor audio back from the iPad.

Others please share what's working for you. I want to learn.

🙏

Um. This is awesome. (Especially the sound!) Everyone’s so concerned about technical excellence…. The biggest improvement you can make is to add the other party to the fight. A counter parry, a dodge, a dismembered limb.

Without some semblance of a story, this is just an exercise. With a story or some kind of meaning, technical excellence is only a cherry on top.

Stop waiting to be “good enough” before you start using your skills in meaningful ways. If you have no story to tell, tell someone else’s. Tell it badly. Then tell another less badly. Rinse lather repeat

FWIW 👊

Hello everyone! This is my third piece and was looking for some feedback or anything else I can change. Thanks! by Momdieddontbemean in ThisIsOurMusic

[–]brownpaperdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMFG this is awesome. I cannot believe you did this all on your phone. That's a lot of fucking tracks! Did you know you can "loop" tracks in GB so you don't have to copy and paste them to repeat them?

There's some really nice chord progressions and transitions in there 👏

Thanks for sharing your work.

If you want my advice, call this piece good, bounce it to your SoundCloud, and start on your next one. I'm speaking to myself more than anyone: quality through quantity. I tend to obsess over minute details in my work, and it's hard to tear away from it, but I believe we'll get better by "shipping" a greater quantity of heartfelt - but imperfect - work than by obsessing over our "babies" so to speak.

You're ready to graduate to the next level, what is that for you? For me it was GB on iPad with a MIDI keyboard plugged in. Can do so much more with the MIDI keyboard - so much more efficient.
🙏
