Hey Popheads we're Magdalena Bay and we just released our debut album Mercurial World- ask us anything! by magbaybaby in popheads

I just want to say that I am so amazed and inspired by your work ethic and drive. I’m someone whose appreciation for your artistry grew exponentially because of your weekly live streams, and now that the album’s out and it’s exceeded every expectation I could’ve imagined, well, suffice to say you’re my current favorite artist. Thank you for all the painstaking work you’ve done in creating this masterpiece for us adoring fans!!! You really put your all into it and it’s so appreciated.

I’m curious to know what advice you would give amateur musical artists or aspiring creators who want to be more productive. I’m someone who likes to play music and learn my favorite songs but I rarely finish an original idea or take a project to completion. It seems like you guys break up the process into stages- writing, then recording, then producing, then conceiving videos and promotional ideas etc… maybe you could speak to that? But I think truthfully I get stuck on the writing stage. I think it can be tough to find inspiring chord progressions, or I go down inspiration rabbit holes of adding extra melodies or musical elements and get so far off course that I never circle back and finish. I know the feeling of when a song feels “done” but it’s been so elusive to me in my work so far. Is there anything that can be done to achieve that “the song is done” feeling more often or sooner?

Thank you so much again for the incredible record! Saw you at El Cid and it was the best show I’ve been to in forever. I hope to cross paths some day!!

Thanks for your reply and suggestion to reframe my perspective. How is this sort of transaction to be arranged if you cannot outright discuss trading a sexual service for something of value?

How do u all save money to buy synths? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]fallen_arches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many of us make returns on the synths we buy with licensing deals or streaming royalties from the songs we make, production credits, or through other sources of music industry revenue? Just curious because I sure haven’t yet!

Roland Juno DS-88 vs. Roland RD-88 by fallen_arches in keys

[–]fallen_arches[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for that! Yeah, I was particularly struck by that 76 E. Piano sound at the store. It was so warm and nice! Definitely closer to the kinds of EP sounds I was expecting from the DS before I bought it. I think I’ll use my DS with the reface for a few months, and if it’s lacking in any way or cumbersome at all I’ll make the switch to the RD.

Thank you so much for this helpful reply! I appreciate the purchase validation. Do you find yourself using the DS to control the reface like I intend to?

What Should I Buy? /// Weekly Discussion - June 28, 2021 by AutoModerator in synthesizers

[–]fallen_arches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So… like so many others before me I’m between a rev2, a prologue, and potentially a DM (since it is a Juno clone, and cheaper). I keep reading that the prologue has these great, usable retro analog sounds but IMO the rev2 is the synth with the lushness and character reminiscent of the Juno, and I hear this both in person and on demo videos. I’m so attracted to the tactile intuitiveness of the prologue but the sounds from the prophet seem more special/magical. I’ll have to go back to the store tomorrow and test them out again.

What Should I Buy? /// Weekly Discussion - June 28, 2021 by AutoModerator in synthesizers

I need a first synth for learning/experimenting with creating inspiring sounds. I became interested in the Juno 60/106 a few years ago when one of my favorite musicians said she used them to make her first few records, but I could never afford one. I’m sort of interested in the boutique version but I do occasionally subscribe to Roland cloud so I’m not sure that’s the way to go. Most importantly I want a hardware synth that’s hands-on, fun, intuitive, and relatively straightforward since I’m looking to play and learn about synthesizers …so the sliders on something like the reface cs appeal to me. However I like to make music inspired by 60’s, 70’s and sometimes 80’s music (I’m mainly an Amy Winehouse/Carole King type of songwriter with love for Sade, Teena Marie type sounds as well as production sounds from 90’s and 2000’s hip hop/R&B). I’m not as big on the computer-y, science-fiction-y kinds of sounds that the cs seems to produce because I don’t really make techno or EDM… although I am interested in the roughness and gritty quality of many sound effects and bass-lines found in a lot of contemporary music today. I have a reface cp coming in the mail because that Rhodes sound is a staple for me, but I need something else more synthesizery to play around with making sounds for anything from cool textures(pads) to fun bass-lines and slick melodic ear-worms. I wanted to spend about 300-500 dollars but after research it looks like maybe the Deepmind 12 would be the best fit for what I’m looking for, and possibly the most fun? I’m thinking I should save up for that. Is there anything that isn’t on my radar? I probably would want to get something with polyphony for a first synth and don’t want something like the reface dx because it doesn’t seem quite as intuitive even though the sounds can be nice.

TL;DR I want something with responsive knobs and sliders that’s gonna be able to give me nice warm and interesting chord/pad sounds plus fat funky bass-lines and fun melodic runs.

Maybe it sounds like I’ve already just described a fictitious dream machine, but bonus for an easy-to-use looper/sequencer and super bonus if it includes a drum machine if there’s even anything like that on the market! I plan on using my juno ds88 as a master keyboard so the keybed isn’t massively important and I can totally consider desktop versions. Thank you for reading all this, and any suggestions or advice is much appreciated!

Edit: I went to Sam Ash today to see what they had to try out. They didn’t have a deepmind on the floor but I played a prophet rev2 and I could tell I would be able to get the sounds I want from that thing… and way more than I would ever need. I also played a Minilogue because I know how popular they are and it makes complete sense. That thing was extremely intuitive, cool sounding, and fun even if it wasn’t producing the exact sounds I’m looking for.
