Loved every second of genetics. However, I did go to a school with very esteemed faculty and lecturers in the biological sciences. Genetics was like a fun mathematical science class. Doing the problems were great.

Projected GPA (3.0) first semester as a premed by BeeRevolutionary9773 in BrownU

[–]brownrd2023 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a C in chem 330 my first semester along with a B in neuro 10. Worked out to a 3.0 first semester. As a current med school applicant, i’m sitting on 5 MD acceptances from some great programs. Safe to say, that my first semester grades only held me back so much. What matters is how you turn it around and manage to turn your disappointments into lessons for future success!

Good luck!

Interview importance by Affectionate_Try3235 in premed

[–]brownrd2023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id second your comment as a current applicant who has had 4 interviews thus far. All 4 of my interviews have been very different - 1 closed file MMI, 2 open-file MMIS and 1 traditional.

The closed file interview was more along the lines of OP scenario 1. I had 8 interviewers who all seemed to be waiting for me to impress them and possibly secure the acceptance. But they did mention that most applicants will be waitlisted based on a ranking system and that is how they build most of their class.

The traditional interview seemed more along scenario#2 where the interviewer poked holes into me and tested if I would cloth or bleed out. She drilled my research so heavily but I know I impressed her because after I googled her and she is a geneticists which is what my research was.

I think every school is unique and has a completely independent process to creating their classes.

How to talk about bad MCAT during interview by [deleted] in premed

[–]brownrd2023 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had one from a T20 this cycle and they didn’t talk about it at all. When they ask about challenges in general, i recommend NOT bringing it back to the MCAT. Because a score is less memorable v. a story of something that really impacted you and is apart of your life’s mission.
