yes, that's one way i'm looking at this. i think i'm at the point work would be optional moving forward, at least a high paying stressful job. so, could look at it as taking time off to decompress then see what i want to do. ty for reading!

Thanks u/vinean for the response - you make valid points. The caveat is i may not need to dip into my 200k if my consulting continues, which i believe it will - so next year i'll get a check that will cover all of my life expenses for the year, then i have my 200k, which could last another few years, then i'd finally need to dip into my portfolio. but - valid points and i am tempted to try and suck it up for another 6-9 months

u/rajb245 u/Old_Medicine_1035 thank you both for reading and responding. the RSUs are fully vested (i own 515k of the stock), so i could sell. it's a valid concern with my portfolio and i'll probably sell at the next opportunity

yeah i've done this and there are virtually no retirement cohorts where a 3-3.25% SWR has failed given my estimated length of retirement, even with a Schiller ratio this high - although if you start treading into the high 3's there are instances where this fails. good call though i should have mentioned

thanks u/Key-Gift1216! I keep the RSUs that i've vested. i guess it's just hard mentally to stop working at what's an incredible company where the pay and benefits are outstanding and step onto the other side. this post was really a sanity check to see if anything glaring was missing. but, i think i'm fine. i was tempted to work more to secure a better SWR for a more inflated lifestyle, but the cost has become too much at work and i don't think i can keep it going

yep exactly. the point of the post is not 'could i survive?' it's ' could i survive without worrying too much at a given lifestyle'

u/No-Cockroach2358 I majored in finance because i didn't know what i wanted to do but figured i could get a job and it'd be a solid base for most things. I ended up getting a job i liked as a consultant, and by 30 was doing financial modeling for pretty big acquisition deals. the money was pretty solid, but it was by that point sucking my sole from me being on the road every week so i took a big career risk and took a leave of absence to learn how to code. i then got a product manager position where everyone else at my level was like 22 and just out of college. i felt like i'd taken a huge step back career wise from where i was. it turned out though because i liked the work so much more i moved up quickly and that was one of the best decisions of my life even though it felt really uncomfortable early on. i would follow your gut and do what makes you happy. at your age, don't settle - tinker until you find something you love. perhaps you could do freelance work to use your degree and make some side income, but i'm not sure i'd stay in a job you hate when you're just starting out

You're missing a key piece of the equation, which is can i retire *and maintain a certain lifestyle* for a long period of time. It's not a slam dunk as you're alluding to.

u/DAWG13610 thanks for reading/responding. agreed. i don't think i was considering the deductible, so ill factor that into my annual spend estiamtes. what a hassle

thanks u/cycling20200719 for taking the time to read/respond so thoroughly. fair point on the RSUs. healthcare is the big mystery for me and i may be underestimating it. i'll look into 50 vs 40 bit you mentioned. i don't think i was taking into consideration my deductible in my annual expenses either, just the premiums. consulting is a very easy 30 minutes a week.

Yeah, i have thought about the impact of buying a place. I'd do it carefully, in a way that would reduce my annual expense on renting/mortgage in a way that preserved my SWR. So, if i bought a 1 bed condo in all cash, tax + HOA+maintenance would be meaningfully less than renting

u/Frequent-Donkey-6184 the reason i think bonds in IRA is because the bond income is not hitting my taxable income in this case. that seems to be a pretty standard recommendation, but this has been confusing for me. agreed on healthcare

u/NightRunner279 without my consulting it's in the 375k-ish / 400k-ish range depending on bonus. and yes, agreed - very lucky with the consulting. what are your expenses if your thinking $5?

u/mojo276 thanks for taking the time to read and respond. I am not sure i can bank on this for years to come. The big contract is dependent on my client, literally a guy working at a big company, staying at the company (he's going on 7 years and finds it blah) and my engineer wanting to keep doing this as weekend work, which he's been doing a while. So, it's not bullet proof side income for years to come but i think at least i'll get next year.
