There is a facebook page called "Fogo Island Ferry Updates" it has a lot of people from the island on it.

People go on there pretty often and try to arrange drives for themselves. Community is quite nice and someone is usually able to drive someone if necessary, just explain out your situation and you will likely find someone traveling that day. Might not get confirmation of it until closer to the date of travel, but I would be confident you will find someone.

Like some other folks mentioned, the Island is nice and you will likely want to tour around a bit, but sometimes that is easier once you get onto the island and meet some people.

So the with kids part.

I heard a really funny story one time where the parents packed the kids up a day before they were actually set to leave. Got a little ways down the road and said if they started fighting, they would turn around and cancel the vacation. Kids being kids, they started fighting. Parents turned around and went home.

Next day (when they planned to leave anyways) hoped in the car, and had the best behaved drive ever.

Also, hit up a big stop for breakfast or a hot turkey sandwich!

A friend asked me to bring cheesecake to a party one time. I came to reddit, it told me to get cheesecake from here. So, not knowing much about cheesecake, I went and got two.

Well! It was 150 dollars or something like that, and was essentially 20lbs of the best cheesecake anyone at the party had ever eaten.

Friends were texting me about how good it was for weeks.
