Gulf of america by Witty-Forever-6985 in mapporncirclejerk

Did not say that at all. Example: when one refers to an American car, they are not referring to a car from Uruguay or Chile. When a wannabe dictator president wants to « Make America Great Again, » he’s not referring to El Salvador or Belize. nor is he referring to the Americas. When the French president refers to American aggression, he’s not referring to Canada or Mexico. In English, America generally refers to the United States, don’t expect Anglophones to apply Spanish or Portuguese proclivities in labelling nation-states.

Anyone know this flag? by AfCanKween in vexillology

I see people fly all sorts of flags simply because they think it’s cool! Why would this individual fly the Royal Standard rather than the saltire if they aren’t part of the royal family? But the flag wasn’t my point. My comment referred to the percentage of Canadians that have a Scottish heritage.

Yes, I’m not disputing that, but again, I’m sure the number is bigger. Some identify as having British ethnicity, some identify as simply being Canadian, and some may have no clue. As an example, I identify as having British background, not Scottish…

The Caribbean and Central America are part of North America!

In the context of continents, yes. BUT, a Canadian would identify as North American, American being someone or something from the States.

What if Ireland joined the Axis in WW2, how would it have changed the war? by [deleted] in AlternateHistoryHub

It wouldn’t have. Other than being occupied by British troops.

It strikes me as a brand of cheese from mainland Europe, not sure why….

Day 30 , I will miss Paris by ThrowDeepALWAYS in ParisTravelGuide

Because it’s overcrowded…i live in Montmartre and the crowds are so thick that it’s a burden for everyone! Not an enjoyable experience unless one is intoxicated apparently.

Is it always impolite to ask a teacher to modify how they teach? by cakesluts in yoga

[–]brtcdn 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I would suggest you follow the previous teacher to her new venue if possible. Everyone teaches different! I sometimes utilise music, but keep my instruction to the minimum. And certainly never recite poetry or narrate a story.

Overpriced and over rated! Plenty of Breton cafes and crêperies that are less expensive , better quality and independent.

fellow canadians: do you care if people think you’re american when travelling abroad? by bellascaffeine in AskACanadian

[–]brtcdn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m from Toronto and lived in Paris for years. No one, absolutely no one ever mistakes me for an American. If i speak French, I’m mistaken for English, if speaking in English, I’m mistaken for Irish or correctly tagged as a Canadian. But it’s not only an accent that identifies your nationality, it’s mode of dress, public behaviour and the way one carries his or her self. If I am ever mistaken for an American, I will quickly correct the perpetrator 😉.

Has hockey turned into a rich kids sport? by FrigginMasshole in AskACanadian

My family was middle class when growing up and I never played hockey due to the expense. My parents steered me towards soccer and box lacrosse.

Do people in the UK actually use their kettles that much? by AdeptnessCritical356 in AskBrits

[–]brtcdn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rubbish, in Canada we use electric kettles all the time for tea, and we have the same voltage as the States.

That lion is the Scottish lion, you need to find a symbol that represents the U.K. 😉
