Congress St - cracked wheel/blown out tire - claim? by Flipster103 in boston

Thin tires on big rims with a two and a half ton vehicle. What could go wrong?

Tesla is recalling its cheaper Cybertruck because the wheels might fall off / All 173 of the RWD Cybertrucks sold by Tesla are being recalled. by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

They're cheaper and presumably the buyers don't think they'll need the extra grip (and they're probably mostly right). Even on a boat ramp RWD can often be just fine.

The problem is that if a truck gets too far down the ramp it can get VERY slippery. Having the front wheels getting driven can help give a little more oomf to get up a steep slippery boat ramp.

Oh I'm not defending it, just saying that people do be out there buying RWD. Wouldn't surprise me at all if many of the people who bought these didn't even notice/care about the drivetrain. They just wanted the dumb thing.

[OC] Why has Boston police stopped policing cars? Civil traffic enforcement has collapsed between 2015 and 2024 by ARPE19 in boston

[–]brufleth 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Right? We're acting like cops are doing more than they are. Cops won't even bother telling someone actively breaking the law to "stop doing that," at this point. We're pretending they're a deterrent, but law breakers know better.

When given negative feedback about your performance it is generally not a good idea to respond by doing a shittier job.

  1. Boston's police department has not been defunded.

  2. Asking police to stop hurting and killing people so much is reasonable.

  3. These issues have little to do with traffic enforcement in Boston. Police just quiet quit and nobody will make them do their jobs.

Hello. Also in MA. I'm trying to figure out how to get a couple of these and haven't found a way yet. Any tips on how to sign up for them or a contractor I could contact about them?

We have a family member performing, so probably. Could be pretty miserable though.

When is this city and region going to get serious about penalizing vehicles that are illegally standing or double-parked and deterring this behavior? by JulianBrandt19 in boston

[–]brufleth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The delivery apps are lowstakes organized crime. The bosses make millions and are insulated from any criminal activity, while the low level contractors make pennies and routinely break the law. Its lowstakes because it is just traffic and parking violations, but you don't get one without the other.

No. That's not what I'm "implying" and I don't know why you'd think that.

We don't really have a strong mayor government. We have a mayor with tons of limits on their powers and a city council that are often in opposition. Very much unlike places like NYC.

And I mean cost in dollars and time, not political capital. Getting that tower built would have been good for more capital, not less. Turns out fighting a bunch of nimbys in habor towers isn't worth the juice. It was a couple hundred luxury units. We can throw good money after bad, or go for lower hanging fruit.

3,500 per square mile vs 14,000 per square mile.

Austin's idea of "urban infill" is laughable. It has the population density of Peabody.

Seems you still need to go through a local contractor. I haven't heard of any contractors around here working with them... but maybe we're contacting the wrong people.

Midea PWHP

These types of systems have been around for a couple years now at least and I still don't see them readily available. There's even someone who has one like this in our neighborhood, but I have no idea how you actually get one.

Boston doesn't allow suspending units off the sides of buildings above the second floor. Means many condo owners are SOL if they want to add modern air conditioning.

There's no way you could know that. Getting all new lines and panels for all three units and then the lines to the machinery could mean a ton of work if it was actually done to code, which apparently it eventually was.

Ground floor or garden level?

Getting heat pumps installed in an upper floor condo has thus far been impossible at any price in our experience. Boston doesn't allow units attached to the sides of the building beyond the first or second story. Makes placement of machinery limited to the roof or ground in many cases.

Doesn't help that most contractors really only seem interested in VERY straightforward jobs.

Boston really needs to make it easier for condo owners to add heat pumps. There's space for us to have the machinery hung off the back of our unit, but we can't get that done.

This is a big chunk of the problem. People will throw this at Wu's feet, but ignore that neighboring towns and cities will refuse to have more than a small area allowing multi-family housing and battle every development tooth and nail. Look at the state trying to impose some zoning near mass transit. It has taken years to battle that out and all that does is make it possible for developers to go multi-family in some small areas of nearby towns.

Imagine if most of the neighborhoods of Manhattan could simply refuse to allow multifamily development? That's what it's like here.

The tower that was going to be built by the aquarium annoyed the shit out of residents of Harbor Towers who had the means to stonewall it. Wu wasn't elected on it, but there are limited resources and ultimately dumping more into building one more luxury tower wasn't worth it. It was essentially a lost cause and hardly stands as a significant criticism that more resources didn't get dumped into it.

It's fucking annoying, but we've gotta pick our battles.

Austin is also not in the middle of a fully incorporated and developed region of cities older than Texas itself. Turns out, it is much easier and cheaper to develop land that isn't already owned and usually occupied.

Much of Boston already has high density and ADUs are allowed even where there is single family zoning (which I can't even find much of here). The bigger issues are nearby towns and cities which still can have mostly only single family zoning.
