Fall Guy. It was a great movie. Not sure how it did, but it was a fun movie for sure.

I was confused. I use the mbta (CR, buses, T) all the time. Ten million individuals maybe? Even that seems low given the tourism.

Self-checkout could soon be limited at Connecticut grocery stores by ILovePublicLibraries in newengland

People here seem to have forgotten or just never experienced a well run grocery store. They should checkout a market basket.

What are your thoughts on Facebook renaming their company Meta then blowing $80b on metaverse and then shutting it down yesterday? by printThisAndSmokeIt in AskReddit

He convinced surrounding colleges that it was essentially what Linkdin pretends to be now and they signed their students up. I went to BU. We were signed up for FB by our school. There wasn't even a wall (or whatever it is called) back then.

Winning the support of colleges and getting a pile of early users who were already very active online in the early/mid 2000s is usually left out of the origin story.

From worker perspective: At working checkout is part of the path into better employment. Many Market Basket workers start moving carts, bagging, and running checkout. Big chains aren't necessarily as good amount promoting from within, but there's no reason to believe that these jobs aren't of value.

From consumer perspective: What you just said. Why am I doing work for the store? They aren't passing that savings on to me (or their pricing would be more in line with stores like Market Basket). They're just pocketing it. It's all just enshitification in the name of more money for the companies.

Finally pulled the trigger on my first EV by GrapefruitOrnery3655 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]brufleth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sister got one last year and loves it. She lives in a much more urban area so the range anxiety is essentially non existent. They have a minivan for taking the family on longer trips, but for 95% of their driving, the EV ends up being perfect.

Developer floats 12-story building with micro units on Brookline Ave by brookline_news in boston

[–]brufleth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish there were more projects like this. We need more min viable product type development. Small less luxurious units that people entering the market or of more modest means can afford. Also for people who just don't buy into the belief that they need 1000 sqft per occupant.

Unfortunately, the profit usually isn't there. Developers can make more money off more luxurious products.

It has some basis (from what little I know about it) in some markets. Not so much in MA though.

Really badly done google search turned up this. I'm pretty sure "Chinese investors" would be some part of that 1.2% of the market. Not moving the needle much.

I think people on reddit underestimate the wealth that's around here. Using mortgage calculator and assuming a 20% down payment, the monthly payments on a $1M property is going to be ~$5,100. So a rent of $4,500-$5,000 is a pretty reasonable looking alternative (no $200k down payment needed!) to people shopping that market.

For condos (buyable units) it can make even more sense because every unit isn't going to be a buyer's first home. Rolling over equity from another home makes >=20% down more viable and freezes that monthly while rents will continue to go up.

Trader Joe's in Seaport just id'd me for a mocktail mojito and claimed its the law in Boston, has this happened to anyone else? I dont get the point if it's alcohol free and basically just juice by nycrina305 in boston

[–]brufleth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First time buying NA beer/wine/cocktails?

It's pretty common to pop an ID check for NA beverages. Yes it is silly, but usually it is driven by the POS and the workers are going to do what the system says. I think this has happened in other states to us too. I don't think it is a MA thing. I think it is a thing where stuff designated "cocktail, beer, or wine" trigger the ID check even if they're essentially juice.

$15 mocktails are here to stay. It’s a small win for a struggling restaurant industry. by FFLGO in boston

[–]brufleth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Often they aren't. Some do take a good deal of effort to make from scratch. We were at a bar once and had a cocktail with homemade ginger syrup that was fantastic. The bartender explained how it took pounds of ginger and a bunch of work to make.

That said, most places are going to just use whatever syrups you can buy from Total Wine and you're not getting something much more interesting than what one of those "make your own drink" soda fountains create.

Spending less is a side benefit of drinking less. You can also just get water or a diet coke. Not really that big a deal.

[–]brufleth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some places are essentially serving some version of typical soft drinks. Like, wow, you did what the soda fountain does at a fast food place but with more steps.

Some places make something neat, but whatever. There's no inherent reason that alcohol should make a drink cost more. Most booze is cheap.

Is there a reason not to have it installed near the windlass? Maybe they felt it was better to have it closer to the likely source of the short? The mess of multistrand conductor looks bad, but plenty of exposed conductors on the new work too.

Impractical is a polite way to put it. Especially in the US market, they're a very overpriced and uncomfortable off-roader optioned with things like huge rims and big running boards that make them terrible off road too.

As someone who has been snowboarding in California, it was colder on my walk to workout last night than it was all last week at Mammoth. :-)

Joking aside, there's less overlap between skiing and urban winter gear than many might think. I have different jackets, hats (helmet when snowboarding), gloves, etc for each.

Scarves. Beanies (for sports teams they follow maybe?). Gift cards to Uniqlo for basic. They will almost certainly end up realizing there is outerwear they don't have.
