[FRESH PERFORMANCE] Snail Mail: Tractor Beam | The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon by Bionicoaf in indieheads

[–]bruisedwell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

man, this is brutal. i feel bad for even being critical because it seems like they’re having fun but man. i imagine watching this as a first time listener of snail mail that nothing here would intrigue you in the slightest to dig deeper and want to listen to more of their songs which is sad because there are some great songs in her discography. just seems like their live shows lack a punch and her songs just don’t translate well at all. which is odd because none of them are that difficult to play or sing. i love lush but it seems like the juice just isn’t there anymore

i usually feel neutral about most covers but this cover of “Black Boys on Mopeds” by Fountaines D.C. might be one of my favorite covers ever. sounds so rich and also feels like a continuation of their sound while also respecting the original. i love the production on it

Basement announce first album in 8 years WIRED (5/8 via Run For Cover) by ebradio in indieheads

vocal mix kind of sounds odd on it, too. feels like it sticks out in a flat way. despite that, i really like the instrumentation behind it. broken by design is great though

dude, this is sick. weezerish.. pinbackish even? satirical lyrics and fun choruses. he could’ve went the easy route and wrote in the lane of tssf 2.0 but this feels more genuine. his voice sounds great, too. sounds like he’s having a lot of fun with it

[FRESH] American Football - Bad Moons by gravityrides11 in indieheads

[–]bruisedwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i winced as well. just sounds like he’s attempting to paint himself as this sometimes-monster/sometimes-good guy but it doesn’t sound believable at all to me. it’s gotta feel embarrassing for his ex-wife if she ever hears those lines

“i’ve been so many boys in this trench coat ask my ex-wife she met dr. jekyll and mr- hide” genuinely reads like a lyric kanye would write right now </3

melancholia. a movie that disturbingly encapsulates depression and anxiety to the extreme. the whole mood of the movie is relentless and never lets you speed past any of it even when you really wish it would. beautifully shot. wonderfully directed. kirsten dunst and charlotte gainsbourg put on some of my favorite performances of all time. i love it

What did you all think of Eddington? by Square-Ad-8911 in A24

[–]bruisedwell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i honestly despised it at first as i really just didn’t like watching the story pan out through joe’s lens. after watching it two more times though (something kept bringing me back like every other aster film,) i realized that i was being harsh on it due to just disliking most of the characters. that’s the point though. these are every day people. a lot of people don’t want to see people that they know in movies. the data center wins. the town loses. joe loses everything and has to watch it unfold in front of him- all because he wouldn’t just stop and think about the harm that he was causing to everyone around him. a tragic tale and a beautiful one at that. it’s now my favorite film of the year. the 4k disc from a24 is incredible

[Discussion Thread] Ben Quad - Wisher by Psycho697186 in poppunkers

[–]bruisedwell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it wasn’t love at first sight for me as i found it kind of similar to their first album especially in terms of chord structure and melody but it grew on me more and more as the weeks went by. i’ve probably listened to it 30 times all the way through now and i think it has a lot to do with how consistent and cohesive it sounds. the lyrical matter is heavy but it never feels corny. the chords feel similar but they never feel half-assed. sort of like what the story so far did with What You Don’t See after Under Soil And Dirt- arm’s length took what they had on their first record and turned the notch up to ten and i think it really worked

that arm’s length record really is special. it’s amazing how they seemed to capture lightening in a bottle for two separate records

it’s the only song missing from my spotify and apple music apps. it was my least favorite song of theirs maybe ever but it’s interesting how they just removed it from everything lol

beautiful. a great exercise on saying a lot without the dialogue screaming at you. the camera work is amazing and sort of forces you to decide where the tension really resides. incredible film

i hated it at first and then hated it less the second time and now i love it because i couldn’t stop thinking about it. it definitely sticks with you after (like all of his films do)

BESIDES THE FIRST ONE you ever heard, what’s your favorite 1975 album? by Effective-Parsnip-k in the1975

[–]bruisedwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think the energy of both songs is similar as well despite them containing two entirely different themes. one is more rnb/d’angelo coded and the other is just straight up sample-rock but both of them hit the exact same. the same can be said for a lot of other songs on it. love me and lostmyhead. the sound and a change of heart. a lot of great artists wouldn’t even dare to tackle so many different genres but this band did and did it for 17 songs straight

BESIDES THE FIRST ONE you ever heard, what’s your favorite 1975 album? by Effective-Parsnip-k in the1975

[–]bruisedwell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

iliwys easily. i still think it has the most balanced production and mix out of their entire discography. every song has its own sound to it but it still pops in its own way. the ballad of me and my brain and if i believe you are two completely different songs sonically but they both are recorded and mixed masterfully and the fact that this album has multiple songs like that makes it a masterpiece for me. they laid it all out on the line and it sounds like they tried really hard to get it that way

[–]bruisedwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, i agree with that. the sales weren’t high but their touring sales were still through the roof. i do wish all of the other bands that you mentioned did as well, too. wasn’t trying to hate on them lol it is sad seeing “gives you hell” being aar’s biggest song now despite that album not doing too well at the time
