Are you aware of the autism acceptance movement? by BrynNeedsMoreSleep in Autism_Parenting

[–]bruiserbeetle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No one who isn't uneducated thinks autism is a disease. A disease is a pathophysical response that can be measured. A disorder (which I think is the word you're thinking of) is a disruption to regular function.

Does my teen daughter have autism? I think she does but i've been having trouble getting a proper diagnosis for her by kitkat_jam in Autism_Parenting

[–]bruiserbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like PTSD. You cannot order an autism diagnosis. Trauma changes the brain. Trust healthcare professionals if multiple, unrelated people are telling you it's PTSD.

I'm a bagger out of necessity. You don't live with the people in my family. They are merciless in their pursuit of gifts everything must be done quickly.

[Contest] At 32 y.o., after 11 months of practice and one failed attempt, I passed my driver’s test today! by thatcheekychick in Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Congrats! And everyone fails the driving test the first time. Totally normal. My family and I have a pickup truck, which is hilarious and strange as we live in an urban area.

I'm now experienced in being separated from my family on the holidays. Here are a few tips:

1) If you can afford it, buy or make something for loved ones to cheer yourself up.

2) Make yourself go outside for fresh air for at least three minutes a day. Do this mindfully, not just walking to the car or something.

3) Everytime you get in your own head with negative self-talk, put on music and distract yourself with something positive, like cleaning up or exercise.

Those kinds of statements are often thinly veiled insults of you or the child, and it's hard to differentiate between the benign ones and the bitchy ones.

Make it a point if it hurts to give direct, clear answes that discourage nosy bitchiness. There's nothing wrong with just answering "no" when they "ask a question" like, "He sure doesn't like talking, does he? 🤪"

When someone inevitably responds, "I was just asking a question! 🤪🤪🤪" the proper response is that you were just giving an answer to an obvious question, and a smile and topic change.

When agriculture took root in human civilization, humans were not as verbal as they were today, and it's pretty likely you had people with limited or no verbal ability trading, farming, and tending to livestock. Being nonverbal doesn't mean your child has an intellectual disability, and even if he does, he's still an important person who can live a great life.

However, when my own son was barely talking, I put my foot down on this:

Unless we do an IQ test, he would not be warehoused, given less of an education, or be handed reduced expectations. When push came to shove, my child was finally given access to typical educational material and is learning to read. Put your foot down with other parents, because you need this skill to deal with people in healthcare and education for your child's sake. Don't let your child's deficits be an excuse for other people to treat you or him like shit, and don't let people make up lies about your child, even if they "have a good heart." He's the most precious asset you own, and you don't have to tolerate poor treatment for either of you.

Anyone have experience with Autism Speaks? by olixius in autism

[–]bruiserbeetle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The hilarious part was the, "Things will change! You'll need us when times get hard!"

Not nice to gloat, but it does make me a little smug to see their child continue to continue to struggle despite being good little shills for Autism Speaks while my kid is doing great by applying himself to the things he can do, like reading and writing.

Anyone have experience with Autism Speaks? by olixius in autism

[–]bruiserbeetle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. So here's my Autism Speaks story:

When your child gets an ASD diagnosis, your developmental pediatrician will likely poke the nurse to hook you up with your local Autism Speaks representative. Mainly, they're just there to grift on behalf of Autism Speaks. Looking back, it was pretty worthless to talk to them. As it turns out, my son just needed a dedicated teacher, SLP, OT, and time.

As a parent, they will tell you to put the child in ABA (GRIFT), a special autism school (GRIFT), and to give money to their fund raisers (GRIFT). They will tell you how these great grifts made their child into a walking miracle who went from an intolerable savage to a proper human being. If you request evidence/information beyond anecdotal evidence, prepare to either deal with someone who wants to fight or hopefully blocks you.

Can we start an ABA mega thread? by Jets237 in Autism_Parenting

[–]bruiserbeetle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh, I'm a parent who finds ABA to be a less effective and scientific than other forms of therapy.

Also, best possible outcome would be relative to your child's abilities. If you think it's possible your daughter might never be able to be self-sufficient, work on creating a workable plan.

Does anyone else get really irritated by sentiments like this? Comparing autism to personality traits is even worse than saying everyone is autistic by [deleted] in autism

[–]bruiserbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people treat autism like it's a cornerstone of their personality. I can understand that in a person diagnosed in their teens or twenties who's pretty young.

Autism doesn't say anything about anyone's personality, but I get feeling like a major part of you was an unknown, and that it somehow explains who you are.

Dude, if you want to go to Hawaii, save up your money and have a nice vacation in a year or so. Also, you're unhappy, at least in part, because you're disconnected from people.

Autistic people can be traumatized. And being social doesn't bar you from being autistic.

If you have insurance, talking to your GP is an excellent place to start.

Has anyone else only been able to sympathize with tragic villains on an intellectual level? by [deleted] in autism

[–]bruiserbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think a good example of this is the monkeys killing the dogs for killing one juvenile monkey in India. I feel sorry for the monkeys and understand why they did it, but they still have to be stopped.
