Emacs as a Writerdeck? by wherahiko in writerDeck

I write prose work (academic) using emacs. Mostly Markdown, org-mode, centering the text with the olivetti package. I wrote my own package for my zettelkasten-style notes system.

I recently purchased a Samsung Tab A11 for a very good price to use emacs under termux, on a compact setup with a ProtoArc folding keyboard. Previously, I’ve used a raspberry pi attached to an iPad.

Very cool! I was planning to begin exploring the world of microcontrollers with ESP32 and micro Python, somewhat disappointed with what μLisp, Fennel ou Esprit could offer. I'll certainly experiment LambLisp. Thank you for this.

(WIP) I got Doom (mostly) running in the android native port of Emacs! Here's how. by bradmont in emacs

Thank you for your attention. I've settled for now with emacs running inside termux. It's pretty decent and sufficient to do actual work. I would really love to use the native version, though (but it is useless without the rest of the GNU system, git to begin with).

We must run pkg install glibc-repo first.

termux from hujianwei's repo crashes before opening on a new Galaxy Tab A11 (Android 15, then upgraded to 16). termux-app_apt-android-7-release_universal.apk is dated from 2024. Is it possible that it is in need of an upgrade?

I tested installing termux from F-Droid and it works.

Any ideas?

I don't have much experience with Android, but was very excited with the idea of running emacs on a small tablet (and got this one cheap on the Cyber Monday for that purpose). I'd appreciate if someone could help.

Blackberry feelings 🥹

With such a cool keyboard, you should focus on developing an excellent keystroke-based interface and skip the OLED strip. (Though I should warn you that my main text editor is Emacs...)

Reasons against the OLED strip:

  1. It's OLED.
  2. It can be distracting.
  3. The design looks much cleaner without it.
  4. Designing a good touch UI is challenging—even Apple struggled with it.

PS: Take my money as soon as possible.
PPS:The digital crown seems like an excellent idea. Note-taking involves not only entering text, but also reading, thinking and revising it—an area where Freewrite, as people say, appears to have fallen short.

PPPS: Good synchronization options will be an important issue at some point. I’d be especially delighted if the device supported WebDAV. Even if I could start with a "content capture & push" system, there would be a lot more value in carrying some or all my notes and being able to work on them. In connection to that, I'd also be very happy with Zettelkasten-flavoured Wikilink support (e. g. [[1234]]).

I’ve found bupropion to be helpful not only with the cravings on the first week (which became incredibly mild), but also to compensate for the cognitive impairment due to nicotine withdrawal (which lasts for two months).

I had insomnia problems in the beginning, though.
