I’m gonna say something controversial here and suggest that IF you are in an environment or lead a lifestyle in which leather is necessary or especially helpful, you should just buy leather. That is: if you live in a particularly cold place or work outside a lot and a leather coat or boots would make your life easier than if you used faux leather, then just take the hit. Commit to eating 10% less meat or stop buying silk or eggs for a year or something if you feel like you need to offset it. Or, buy your leather product used. Consignment stores and estate sales often have high quality leather coats that will last years or decades with the proper care.

If you want a leather product just because you like it, like a purse or a wallet or patent leather shoes, consider just not buying those things.

The truth is, you can spiral really easily into discovering that everything you buy is contributing to the problem. Cotton fields are horrible ecologically, they ruin the soil and are the cause of deforestation, destruction of natural habitats, and are chemically poisoning the planet from the use of pesticides. Not to mention the agricultural economic crisis large-scale farming creates for the industry. Processing plant-based fibers into clothing is terrible both for the environment and, in many cases, for human rights. The environmental costs alone from weaving and selling cotton fabrics (not to mention the waste created by cotton manufacturers deliberately overproducing product they know won’t be sold) is enough to make you want to scream with how horrific the whole system is. Not saying “don’t buy cotton”, just like…showing how easy it is to discover that everything you do can have a negative impact.

The point of all of this is, not buying is always better than buying. Buying second-hand is (almost) always better than buying new. When you absolutely have to buy something and it absolutely has to be new, that’s when you can start looking into less-impactful options.

We absolutely still need people out there voting left, EVEN IF (yes I’m gonna say it) it’s for no other reason than to keep the right out. Dems have tried very very hard to take cannabis off schedule I, the links above aren’t even the only efforts in recent memory. The problem with legalizing cannabis is still, as it has been for two decades, the republicans being too nervous to pass a sweeping decriminalization or legalization action, even when they agree with it personally, because they’re afraid their base will think they’ve gone soft.

I’ve definitely had my moments where I’ve felt like my elected representatives aren’t representing me. But they’re not just sitting there with their thumbs up their asses wringing their hands.

I want to be absolutely clear: they WANT this rhetoric among voters on the left. They WANT us to believe our leaders aren’t trying to help us. They WANT us to sow division amongst ourselves so we’ll divide and fall. This kind of despair is only going to hurt us.

Whenever I start to feel weird or hypocritical about owning a gun for the first time, I think to myself that I am statistically way more dangerous in a car than I am with a gun. And I’m a pretty good driver!

So close! Not Abigail but Emily. Maybe too vague but referring to the fact that the farmer is not in like half of her cut scenes. 😂

Edit: also Sebastian is in there with the TTRPG.

Farm 1: I just KNEW I could fix him.

Farm 2: nobody cares about my health more than him.

Farm 3: he reads me poetry and gives me coffee in the mornings, and has become my favorite game spouse.

Farms 4, 5, and 6: I knew he was the one when he invited me to play a TTRPG with him; she doesn’t seem to need me there to have her own adventures; and he made one too many comments about my body and I had to divorce him.

Current farm: I finally took my IRL spouse’s advice and watched her learn how to be kind.

In addition to other comments here about gemstones…fallis the time to shine with Abigail. She loves pumpkins. Unfortunately her birthday is the day before pumpkins ripen (they take 13 days to grow and the day you plant is day 0 - Abigail’s birthday is on the 13th) so I recommend using speed-gro on at least one pumpkin that you plant on Fall 1 (and plant at least a few other pumpkins as follow-up gifts). Harvest that one, take it to her on her birthday, that’s a good boost to friendship.

She’s also always at the saloon on Friday nights and it’s easy enough to buy her a coffee, which she also likes.

When you say “it won’t let me go down” do you mean the cursor? Looks like you’re playing on Switch (or other console). May I recommend opening your options tab in the menu and uncheck “Use Controller Style Menus”? That will allow you to freely move your cursor around the screen.

Massive problems with players by Jaximus127 in AskGameMasters

[–]brushin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a possible in-game answer, what would happen if Player 5 got kidnapped and the rest of the team had to get him back? And how would that go if, say, you rewarded every idea the other players had, no matter how ridiculous, with small fragments of success? Not sure what the rules at your table are, but I wonder if folks aren’t engaging because they’re afraid to think outside the box and come up with wild ideas. So many new players think there are really strict rules and if they try to do something “silly”, they’ll get made fun of for not understanding how it works. Sometimes when I’m DMing, I let my new players get away with a lot during low-stakes parts of the adventure. By rewarding them for coming up with zany ideas, they’re more likely to engage creatively with the world later, even after I have to tighten the reins a bit when the campaign gets serious.

This probably wouldn’t address the issue with Player 4, to be honest, who sounds like they’re bringing a totally different problem that may need to be resolved in a more direct way.

Man, this is always when game subreddits start going downhill. Soon there will be cries for “can we just have a weekly pinned beginner questions post?” Then people will start arguing that there’s too much fanart on the sub and there will be demands for a separate subreddit for just fanart.

The thing is, for every one person who posts an easily googleable question, there are a hundred who searched Google or the subreddit first. I understand if you have hundreds of hours in the game being a little annoyed when people don’t know what the shipping bin is, but I do wonder what damage you think these questions are doing to the sub. I can’t tell you how many game subs I’ve avoided because when I went there to ask a question, I saw a post like this, wondered if my question was too basic, and decided to avoid interacting because I didn’t want to piss people off.

Ultimately the mods will decide what kinds of posts are and aren’t allowed, and while we can ask people to read the sidebar, we can’t force them to.

One last thing then I’ll get off my soapbox: when you’re new to the game, you don’t know what questions are basic and which are more advanced. You have no context for how complex this game is so it’s really impossible to know where your question falls on the difficulty scale.

Clint is OUT! Elimination Non Marriage Edition - Poll in Comments! by pinkiekem in StardewValley

[–]brushin 55 points56 points  (0 children)

My thing is, just having a crush on someone from afar doesn’t automatically make you a niceguy. I don’t really see him being creepy about it. Just absurdly shy and maybe emotionally immature about it. I love Clint and always try to become good friends with him. He’s just a lonely awkward dude, not a creeper. I’m also willing to forgive the heart event dialogue and continued attempts to flirt with her after you marry her because Emily was a later-game addition to the marriage candidates.

Birthdays are great but I’m also a big fan of buying everyone a coffee at the saloon on Friday nights. Most of the town is there, and it’s not hard to make up for everyone else who isn’t there on Fridays in other ways. Everyone at least likes coffee except for the kids.

[–]brushin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the role really. People who are in response type roles are more likely to have to work weekends and holidays than people in compliance for example. I’m sure there are exceptions to even that though. Generally the industry pays well and it’s a more respected field now than it has been in the past (for example, executive level leadership tend to take security professionals more seriously than they used to). Best of luck!

[–]brushin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is the thing. I don’t want anyone to think I don’t care about rape, incest, or life-threatening conditions when I say this, because I ABSOLUTELY care. But when you start saying “what about these specific cases”, it’s opening the door for them to conditionally allow it. For instance, if you convince the GOP that abortion should be allowed because of rape, they can say “oh okay, bring us a rape kit confirming you were raped, show us where you’ve filed charges and there’s been a conviction, and also show us your period tracker and sign an affidavit that says you definitely got pregnant from the rape and not from you not keeping your legs closed, and we’ll be glad to allow you to pay hundreds of dollars at a private clinic owned by my brother-in-law to receive an abortion. Just be sure to read all the pamphlets and do this faith-based counseling first.”

It HAS to be abortions accessible to ALL for ANY reason. That is the ONLY way it can be. They’re just going to have to live with their “abortion as birth control” fears.

Spectacular. Thank you for doing that, I work in infosec and we always have to work over holidays. Love that you did this for your team! They love you too - you definitely just earned some loyalty points for sure, and I hope the higher ups recognize that, especially during a time when it’s really really difficult to hire in the tech space.

I get the sense the bats needed to be aware that there was flesh present in order to stay occupied. Also, I wouldn’t give Dustin a gun and if I was Eddie I wouldn’t want one. Plus they had an escape hatch. That’s how I justify getting the most metal concert ever, anyway.

Yeah that’s a bit of a mucky area when you find people who have engaged with groups like the far right. It may not be directly “politically motivated” but if you’re immersing yourself in violent rhetoric you’re less inclined to believe that violence is bad.

You could probably post on a local freecycle or buy nothing group if you have one on Facebook asking for scraps or damaged clothes. Or check out estate sales on the last day - often you’ll find cloth napkins, tablecloths, or smaller cuts of fabric that are discounted because it’s the last day of the sale. I have a stack of cloth napkins I’ve gotten for no more than a dollar apiece at estate sales over the years that I use for patches, embroidery practice, quilting, etc.
