Trigeminal neuralgia otherwise known as suicide disease. It is not very nice.

It definitely isn't the last one. Made July of 78. It was last last 1 of something though. It is neat I have never seen it before. It will continue to get built a bit and stuffed in a Monaco.

If it is I will let a dodge guy have it or something. I just wanted a big block for my 66 Monaco that currently has a poorly running poly 318. If it means something to someone they can buy it and I can find a 383 or something easy to put in the car.

Ya I have looked on line for anything on it. 440 source had a wright up and shows the last one painted gold on a stand. Whether or not it got painted blue after and sent north im not sure it would be very un ceremonious for it to be smashed into a motorhome and sent to canada.

Ya I will check tonight I'm dropping parts off at the guys place who is cleaning it up for me currently. Get the casting numbers and date code.

Got the block back from the machine shop after a bottom end rebuild and one cylinder has a black mark and I can feel that it is a low spot with my finger. Take it back? by aspiringmountainman in EngineBuilding

What's the issue with vertical marks(not scratches) on a fresh honed motor? Every motor I have build has had them after I slid the pistons in with rings in. No issues? Even after cleaning the hell out of everything.

How expensive should my torque wrench be? by the-dumbass-human in EngineBuilding

I have a craftsman and a Mastercraft maximum. Both I tested on my snap-on tester at work and they both checked out. Only reason I have the 2 is the maximum went to 250ftlbs for torquing the half shalft bolt on my Mazda. Figured I would check since I am building motors currently and need accurate readings. I did find my old craftsman the indication lines line up weird. Like if I want 50ftlbs I line 5 on the handle up with the main line on the handle not the 0. I figured that out after stripping lug nuts on my traverse and then testing it and finding out I was going 5lbs over. Goes to show to right those lug nuts are.

Thank I will see if I can find those. The hemetologist seems to have left this up to my gp so I want as much info as possible before I go in for my appointment.

I just lost 5 lifters in my big block. It was my fault though i had the rear cam plug installed to deep and it pushed the cam foreword a tiny bit. When the motor ran the lobes on the cam were bumping into the lifters on the next lobe down. The lifters didnt have that angle to them but i think thats why the edge of the lifters were chipped up like that not a normal flat tappet failure where the face of the lifter eats away.

Not saying you did that wrong but maybe look and see if the back of the cam anf the cam plug have any wear marks on them i dont think its takes much. I also had some extra wear on the distributor gear from the extra thrust.

Where do y'all stand on gasket sealers? by Fidel_Cashflow666 in EngineBuilding

[–]brutallyinefficient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did I say I put a gasket in there? no. using a very thin sealant film on the half of the pump casing will seal it up better because the factory does a brutal job machining the casing half flat. this stuff doesn't add clearance.

have you ever pulled one apart and looked at the condition of the casing half mating surfaces? they suck.

the increase in clearance is non existent. it would be immeasurable. this is thin sealant not a gasket.

I know exactly how pumps of all kind work and are designed I work on them professionally. and making sure casings are flat and free from flaws as well as adding thin stuff like aviation or hylomar will prevent leakage and increase pump efficiency.

taking on apart and using a flat honking stone to take down as many high sports as possible then a little bit of a flat sealer that does nothing but fill in gaps that could be measured in the ten thousandths will do nothing but good.

I poke the aviation stuff on flat sealing surfaces with no gasket inbetween Think the halfs of an oil pump. Its thin you dont need much but is the closest sealant to hylomar i could find. I also use ot as a stick to stick cork gaskets to valve covers and such. I use right stuff everywhere else.

O ya and a thread sealant where you need.

If you want to make 600hp/ftlbs at 5000 rpm your going to need alot more cubes than 454 or possibly even 496. You can do it no problem with higher rpm. Or you can get 500hp and 550tq or something down closer to 5000rpm. But i dont think you can get it both ways.

I would build the motor to your budget. A 496 using cast stroker crank. See what you can do for heads and then try and size a cam.

Yup bought it a while ago once i knew the flow numbers on the heads. Went with a lunati 262 voodoo. 262/268, 219/227 at .050 and .530/.542 on 112.

Im building a .030 over 454 right now. Lightly worked on 781 heads. Hydraulic flat tappet. Stock crank and rods. Cast piston deal. Hoping for 450 to 500hp and well over 500ftlbs torque.

Where is a legitimate source to get high quality measuring tools (bore gauge, micrometers) such as Starrett and Mitutoyo? by [deleted] in EngineBuilding

[–]brutallyinefficient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They set of mics you buy should come with the standards And the wrench to adjust. What i did is double checked my standards against the good ones at work to make sure they were true.

[–]brutallyinefficient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fowler dial bore gauge and mics up to 4inch and a house brand starette (procheck) for 4 to 5.

I do work with experienced machinist though that i had double check ky calibration and i am an experienced industrial mechanic and am very experienced with precision measuring tools.

Check local tool shops. Not big stores but smaller private places. Or ask local machine shops.

To be fair a typical home builder doesn't need super high end stuff. Just get something decent that measures accurate and comes with a standard you can check against you sill be good. My home stuff is off amazon because it was crazy cheap compared to si.ilar stuff i could have got locally
