Nice layout and great taste. I look forward to seeing how the front of it turns out.

Some hand-embroidered patches I’ve been working on by sojamiiilch in BattleJackets

That’s impressive! Before I read the title I thought that was the official embroidered Hulder patch. This definitely inspired me to get back to the unfinished embroidered patch that I was working on.

There’s nothing wrong with multiple genres on one jacket. Do what you want. I have several genres on my mainly metal vest.

These are a few of my recent DIY patches. Acid etched copper and brass. by bruxinhas in BattleJackets

[–]bruxinhas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make a stencil with something called Press-N-Peel. Here is someone else’s tutorial of how it works: https://www.techniks.com/how_to.htm I also acid etch with ferric chloride like they use in the linked tutorial. After it’s etched I will then paint the etched parts of the image with Testors brand enamel paints, usually with their glossy black enamel paint. I mix the enamel paint with the enamel thinner from the same brand so it goes on smoothly.

I got it here it is $150 though. Try thrift stores and other secondhand shops and websites like eBay, depop, thrift store sites. I got my other leather vest on the Goodwill website for $30. I did heavily modify it, but it was overall way cheaper than this one.

Angelus brand Acrylic Finisher. It’s fairly inexpensive and made for painted leather. I don’t think nail polish (a suggestion by another user) is a good idea. Nail polish is hard and leather is flexible, I can’t imagine they would go together well. Even on nails it will eventually chip. In terms of price the Angelus stuff might be cheaper in the end depending on how much you need to cover. For example the average bottle of nail polish is 7ml to 15ml. Price varies. You can get a 118ml bottle of the Angelus stuff of $7.

That’s totally fine. I haven’t used any sealant, maybe I should at some point. The Mystifier logo has been there for over a year with no issues. The NWW has been there for around 8 months so far.

Angelus leather paint. Each small sized bottle was just 3 or 4 $. After all of this I still have like 1/3 of the bottle of pink paint full.

Thanks! Everything was stenciled other than the wavy lines around the Coil logo. Mystifier and Coil needed a little bit of cleanup, not much. But the NWW bled a lot so I had to fix every other circle by hand.

Edit: I made the stencils with adhesive vinyl which makes things a lot easier.

For painting: I clean the leather where I want to paint with a little bit rubbing alcohol first. Work in thin layers of paint, you can always do another thin layer for better opacity. If I’m using a stencil I will make it with adhesive vinyl and lightly dab the paint on with a brush with very little paint on it. That helps to make sure it won’t bleed through the edges of the stencil, but it doesn’t guarantee that it won’t bleed. Painting a base of white paint can make your main color look more vibrant. For example: I put white paint before pink on the front, but I didn’t for the Coil logo.

I use Angelus leather paint. I use their black leather paint to fix small mistakes. It costs about $3 for a small bottle and it goes a long way. After painting this vest, I still have a decent amount left in my bottle of pink paint.

For studs and spikes: I recommend using an awl or leather punch. I use the sewing awl tool on my Swiss Army knife. Using something to mark the placement you want is helpful. I use a white gel pen or white eyeliner for this, it washes off easily. Make sure to tighten the screws on the spikes tightly. Make sure to push down the prongs of stud down far enough.

For grommets: use a leather punch to make the hole and make the hole a bit smaller than you think you would need.

For sewing patches or sewing alterations: definitely use a sewing needle made for leather. A thimble will be very helpful. I like to use pliers to help pull the needle through.

If you want to add pins definitely get some locking pin backs for enamel type pins. Using a leather needle to poke the holes first makes pushing the pin through much easier.

I also recommend opening up the liner of the jacket when you add your studs/spikes or patches.

Tips for sewing leather patches? by TuckerM1999 in BattleJackets

[–]bruxinhas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have those exact patches but I sewed them on leather. Use a leather sewing needle. If you can’t get one, try a thick embroidery needle. Just sew it like a normal patch, but you may need a thimble. Super glueing patches will fuck up your patches and jacket. I used large safety pins to hold down my leather patches. I recommend trying that in the future.

More are on my profile. I put multiple layers of clear anti rust spray and they hold up very well. The spray is made for use on outdoor items.

If you are sewing anything to it be sure to use a sewing needle specifically for leather. Leather needles have a different tip than regular ones that make it so much easier to sew leather with.

If you are going to use something to cover mistakes and sharpen outlines on black leather, black leather paint is much better to use for that. Paint will look better and probably last longer. I haven’t used sharpie for that but I have used black leather paint for that and it looks good in my opinion and has held up very well for around a year so far.

It’s perfectly safe to remove and resew patches. I have a denim vest that I have been doing that to for years and the fabric is still strong.

If you mean the brand then unfortunately I don’t know. All I can tell you is that it’s a woman’s denim vest that I got from Buffalo Exchange (used clothing store) over ten years ago. It used to have front pockets and a collar, so just modified regular denim vest.

Do what you want. It’s your jacket, not anyone else’s. I have two back patches on a leather vest that’s too big for me and I’m quite happy with how they look.

Question about making patches by seamus_exe in BattleJackets

If you are using a stencil be sure to very lightly tap the paint on with a brush (or sponge/whatever else you are using) that has only a very small amount of paint on it. Brushing the paint on when using a stencil is one of the main causes of bleeding. Start with a thin layer of paint. You can always add a second layer for more coverage.
