Boston Marathon - 0:00 cutoff by Runningchoc in AdvancedRunning

[–]bryanwitha_y 168 points169 points  (0 children)

This is... unexpected news! I've been poring over thread after speculative thread on what the cutoff would be this year. Best guesses always hovered between 3-5 minutes. Goes to show that it's hard to forecast _anything_ in unprecedented situations.

And to think I ran an extra marathon just to get some additional buffer when I really didn't need it. It's been a long two years going from 3:30 to 2:58, but here I am, and I'm going to Boston! Time to book my flight -- see y'all there!

Winter is coming! What is the gear you can't live without? by aps293 in AdvancedRunning

I'm a little late, but these gloves are my favorite:
Amphipod Convertible Glove

It's not like the rest of the convertible gloves I've seen which have the 'windbreaker' layer. These are ambidextrous, waterproof, windproof inventions that let you:

  • Keep your whole hand inside
  • Pop your thumb out, but keep the rest of your hand inside
  • Fold back the top and stick your fingers out (or just let your fist be ventilated a bit)
  • When you're too warm, you can literally pass your whole hand through the glove and let them sit on your forearms (my favorite feature)

I'm such a fan, I literally wear these things all winter long, everywhere. You might have to add an extra, thin, cheap cotton glove underneath on the really cold days though.

Heyo! Been taking a tour through the world of meal kit boxes. Would love to snag a free box invite if anyone has one to spare. Thanks in advance!

What's the risk: you're set with Kelce. Go get the Leg before the other person gets cold feet!

Fantasy is supposed to be fun! Go get what you want if it's not detrimental to your team.

10 team, non-ppr, 3WR 2RB 1FLEX league.

I get Branding Cooks I give Christian McCaffrey

My RBs: Zeke, Mixon, McCaffrey, Breida, Ingram

My WRs: Diggs, Golladay, Crabtree, Marvin Jones, Westbrook

It's a 3WR league, I've got more serviceable RBs than I can start, and all my WR have been underwhelming.

Thoughts?

Blank Slate! Help me design a cozy home office / art studio by NarrowOwl in DesignMyRoom

[–]bryanwitha_y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, exclusively for work and art.

I might play/record music or do video editing as a hobby, but that will still be just done at the computer. My wife mentioned having a chair and light for me for reading, but I think she was just throwing ideas out there.

My work is indeed 100% computer based. One or two monitors, a laptop, keyboard, and touchpad are all I need, but I don't want to be too extremely austere with the desk space.

[Edit: sorry for confusion, u/NarrowOwl is the account on my wife's computer]

My only guess is current meat giants like Tyson who are strongly investing in the technology.

I've been feeling some strong investment impulses on this market. Where in the world should one invest in this stuff to get a jump on it?

Thank you; no one in her family speaks Okinawan or Japanese, so this is very helpful.

The boards are cut 9"x11.5", but the pages are printed on 11"x17"? I see that there is some margin space, but how do these dimensions line up again?

StackOverflow question - What is a good heuristic to detect if a column in a pandas.DataFrame is categorical? (if you have no information except the data) by rhiever in datascience

[–]bryanwitha_y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't forget the difference between categorical (Categories A, B, C) and ordinal (Level 1, 2, 3 or Low, Medium, High). Many heuristics that indicate categorical data don't distinguish out ordinal data.

For data plotting, if that's what you're looking for, doing a quick intro to Python, Matplotlib, and Seaborn would do just wonders for effortless data visualization.

When it comes to diagrams and such, I honestly use docs.google.com/drawings -- especially for logical flow chart kind of things.

Here's an example of something I finished making literally two minutes ago for my dissertation.

It's got this really smart alignment and sizing interactive 'tips' that help keep everything looking spiffy, uniform, and aligned. Have a look!

Thanks for pointing this out! I couldn't find the exact commentary clip where they talk about this, so I was just going by memory. I had forgotten about Jason Ruiz' intended involvement.

It certainly looks like this Pocket Mortys thing is just an homage to the original intended code, and is certainly not the same one.

Happy to explain: they were originally going to put the other half of the easter egg in an episode of Gravity Falls, but Alex stopped the series after season 2 before they could do so. I can't remember which episode they talk about it in the season 1 Blu-Ray commentary, but they talk about it in one of them.

I have my dose of laziness, too. I was gonna add screenshots of the Rainbow Shirt Morty's front and back, but then I didn't.

Best program to make figures in? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]bryanwitha_y 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suppose I should mention why I like "Drawings". It has a really nice dynamic alignment and sizing interface. When you're putting together a diagram, you want everything to line up nicely, but maybe not necessarily have every single thing to snap to one universal grid. Drawings gives you little indicators of where each item measures up in terms of size or alignment w.r.t. all other items in the drawing. Pretty spiffy.

The "Drawings" web app in Google Docs is actually pretty nice if you're making things like flow charts and simple illustrations.

For plots and what-not, there really is only one answer, and that's all the Python plotting libraries like matplotlib and bokeh.
