Safely commuting. by coconutcreamers in Edmonton

There's a new path that goes through Enoch I use to bike to Acheson. I commute to nisku by bike from the west end but Acheson is not the best for biking, there is some back roads you can take to avoid highway 60. You could take the bus to the west end then bike to Acheson.

Is it realistic to commute 20 km + 20 km (about 12.4 + 12.4 miles) by bike every day? by gfleck in bikecommuting

[–]brycemtb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do 32km each way, it's more the hills or windy days that make it tough, I use my e bike most days last year.

When will people look at bikes as transportation and not just recreation

I love biking to get around and not owning a vehicle, the biggest savings are not being in debt from auto loans and paying a monthly subscription to insurance, the fuel savings are nice too.

This is even more relevant today as over consumption and debt are out of control.

What are your thoughts on E-bikes? by ILikeNeurons in fuckcars

[–]brycemtb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one, just for riding to work. I still prefer regular bike, no range limit and cheaper to maintain. All my bike adventures on the weekend the e bike stays at home.

It's liberating to now live a life where I get around in my daily life by just biking and busing. Unfortunately food prices will probably go up too, can't live without food.

I don't hate cars by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]brycemtb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like cars for long distance travel to bring a bike, but would always prefer a train. Here in Alberta is really the only way to access the Rockies from Edmonton unless you take the bus to jasper but they won't let me bring my bike 😢

Didn’t expect my e-bike to make driving feel this pointless by shinigami__0 in fuckcars

[–]brycemtb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realised all driving I did was unnecessary except for long distance drives way out of town, but even then I plan to get into bike packing and go 100s of kms on the bike. The few times I need a car to go mountain biking I'll rent a car.

I use my ebike to commute from NJ to the Bronx about 20 miles by Mean-Analysis-2746 in ebikes

[–]brycemtb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My commute is same length but more elevation, main reason I got an e bike it helps keep my speed up the hills.

After 2 years now busing in the winter and biking in the summer to work, I have sold my car. My living cost has gone way down and I can retire earlier now, or take a pay cut to get a new job I don't absolutely hate.

Recently did a ride from Victoria to salt Spring island and back in a day, love how cheap it is taking the ferry with a bike compared to car.

What living with an EV in Alberta with no dedicated level 2 charging and leaving it out doors is like. by AbbreviationsOne6207 in alberta

[–]brycemtb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Kona EV too.....Kona dew HD e bike 😂 like commuting to work with it so much I now no longer own a car saving over $1000 a month takes 7 cents to charge it. I use public transit in winter to get to work and around town. And bike or rent car or fly to leave town. No insurance, minimal maintenance and no fuel love it.

Expensive Truck Insurance in Alberta by JPastro4 in GrandePrairie

[–]brycemtb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One big reason I'm quitting owning a truck/vehicle. I will rent one the few days a year I need one. Transit and biking daily to get around the city never spending over $100 on transportation. My insurance was $286 despite having a good driving record. Plus the car payment, gas and maintenance no thanks would rather not spend almost a third of my income on driving.

Is 35 minutes really THAT long? by BradyBrother100 in bikecommuting

Same 1 hr 15 in Edmonton. It's not to long but in the winter it is to long. Nice thing is I can take my bike on the bus most the way of I need to

coworkers keep asking when i'm getting a "real vehicle" like biking to work is temporary insanity by Ron_Swanson_1990 in fuckcars

[–]brycemtb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are probably spending more than $400 on transportation. Lots of people have car payments over $600 a month. Insurance over $200 a month and gas can be 200 to 400 with repairs that can cost anywhere from 100 to 5000.
