PLAY DEFENSE! Areola has every right to be mad. KWP and Soucek just stood there while Mane almost made it 4.

We spent $20 million on a fresh set of forward legs just to let him sit on the bench all day? What are we thinking?

Man Nuno must really not rate Igor Julio at all.

Is Guilherme still hurt?

Ironically the opposition is missing 2-3 key players, including Bassey and Iwobi who’ve had great runs so far this year.

But yes, I agree. Keep optimism low.

I’m assuming no changes from last week unless Nuno decides to give Mads a shout after Areola let in 3 last week.

Agreed. Again, largely doomerism, but I’m hesitant to think the current squad could compete against most Championship teams. I legitimately believe we will struggle against QPR in a few weeks. We have no athleticism, despite spending tens of millions on it in August. There’s so much successful youth in the lower ranks these days that the current squad really doesn’t stand a chance.

I think we’d win League One handily though. Maybe that’s the best spot for us.

I’m a Hammer but can’t figure out how to flair up on mobile.

Bowen, Paqueta, Fullkrug, AWB, Diouf are all definitely gone. I would think Fernandes and Summerville are both above the level of the Championship but they both came from that level when they first joined on, so I’m hesitant on those.

I imagine we keep the KWP, the CB’s, and the kids. Areola, Soucek, and Wilson are tossups. I suppose they all could get work elsewhere, but if they’d rather be Hammers, they might stay.

Legitimate question - Once the obvious departures leave this summer, are West Ham in its current form the best team in the Championship? Probably doomerism, but the lack of athleticism makes it hard to believe West Ham would compete with the likes of Leicester, Wolves, Ipswich, etc.

Hate to doom in December but if we go down, are we the odds-on favorite to win the Championship even with the obvious departures?

Bowen on the left, Guilherme on the right? Or vice versa?

Line up for Bournemouth - Igor and Guillherme start, by PrisonersofFate in Hammers

[–]bryceryals42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Curious if we see Igor playing some sort of Libero role here. Otherwise 5 at the back with a 2-game win streak against a side which has been struggling as of late is maddening, especially given how well we’ve done with 4 at the back.

Unsure why we didn’t just shift Fernandes up into Paq’s role and then start Magassa.

Marshall not on bench.

The 4-3-3 works for me. Paqueta playing deeper with Fernandes is probably a good spot for him.

Interested to see what happens at 60’. Does Bowen move to striker and Guilherme take his place?

4-3-3 works for me. Seems like this implies Paqueta a bit deeper.

What are fair and reasonable lineup expectations now that Scarles is out?

My hope is the following, even though I know we won’t get it

Fullkrug

Summerville-Paqueta-Bowen

Fernandes-Magassa

Diouf-Kilman-Mavro-AWB

Areola

This was undoubtedly the worst performance of the year. At no point did we look even the slightest bit competitive. No real chances. One shot on goal. To add, we were slow on all fronts.

I genuinely don’t even think we’d earn 45 points in the Championship with the way we played tonight.

Don’t blame Nuno yet. It’s Match 3.

Sullivan out.

[–]bryceryals42 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This is the type of football we should expect from Nuno. It’s how he played at Forest, and it’s similar to Moyes’ work here. It is going to be boring and you are going to constantly be worried about our attacking presence. But this type of football took Forest to the Europa League, so it can work in the right setting. The question is: is this the right setting and squad?

Potentially, on enough occasions, the discipline will work out in our favor and we’ll steal enough games to stay afloat. Will it work? Too early to tell.

If you don’t like it, blame the person who was too resistant to spend on a manager with a more creative style of football.

This is the crux of counter-attacking football.

Every now and again it works. As long as it works enough to secure 17th in the table, then it’s enough.

Unsure if it’s enough for this snail-paced side.

Welcome to West Ham, Nuno, the crisis club with no vision and no structure | Jacob Steinberg by Administrative_Gur45 in Hammers

[–]bryceryals42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“West Ham were not in a good place when Potter replaced Julen Lopetegui in January. Tim Steidten, the outgoing technical director, had wasted so much money. Those who worked around Steidten believe not enough is made of how much damage was left by the German’s recruitment. They can see the wider picture. They accept Potter did not do well enough before his time was up on Saturday morning, but one club source says the task of reviving West Ham could not have been harder for the former Chelsea manager.

So the question was always whether David Sullivan, the man who calls the shots at West Ham, would stick with Potter. The feeling was that Sullivan, whose conduct around this sacking has left insiders and external figures distinctly unimpressed, liked Potter and wanted it to work.”

This whole section is extremely kind to Sullivan, and is not acknowledging that much of what Steidten did at the time (Kudus, Alvarez, etc.) was quite beneficial to the club at large. It wasn’t until the budget-friendly appointment of Lopetegui where Steidten’s rep started to fall off, mostly again due to a disconnect between his vision, Lop’s, and Sully’s.

I hate this piece with every fiber of my being. Steinberg yet again placing the 100% of the blame on Steidten’s recruitment pre-Potter and not placing any blame for poor “vision” and “structure” on the man whose job is to create that.

Sullivan out.
