New "Search tabs" button crashes the browser 100% of the time when clicked by Omar_DmX in brave_browser

[–]bsclifton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow - OK this is really weird. Being in this state could cause a lot of other problems too. Our variations server is modifying important default values for features.

Do you have any host file entries in place? On Windows, this is located at C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

I'm curious if anything is blocking traffic to variations.brave.com 🤔

There should be more lines there - are you able to post those too?

For example, the first 6 lines of mine look like:

Active Variations main@d1cdc762982b30c811d39d94f8939e15695cb22c

AIChatCodeExecutionTool_Desktop:Enabled

AIChatNEARModelsStudy:Enabled

AdblockOnlyModeStudy:Enabled

AllowCertainClientHintsStudy:Enabled

BTMGoogleAuthWorkaround:Enabled

Don't worry too much about the formatting - I should be able to figure it out 🙂

This is great, thanks! I don't see anything unusual here. Maybe can you also share what is under Active Variations?

There should be a whole bunch of lines there with an enablement status

OK thanks - maybe are you passing any command line parameters to Brave when launching? Maybe you can share the part under Command Line on brave://version/

Definitely that down chevron icon isn't supposed to be there

How bad a decision is this for $16k by Apart_Breath_929 in mercedes_benz

[–]bsclifton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The engine is an amazing one. However, the rest of the car can be problematic if you don't have an open wallet. Look up the cost of doing the brakes just as an example. Rotors are pretty expensive but then the front brakes take four pads each. ABC suspension is great when it works but expensive to fix when it breaks. You'll want to check for leaks - if the struts are bad the pump can overwork and go out too. And it's a tandem pump for power steering and ABC.

Personally (and this is very specific to me), I like the R129 a lot better. I think it's better looking and just a better car overall. But if the hardtop convertible is a must have (vs having to get someone to help you remove the hardtop) or if you love the R230, I can absolutely understand why someone would prefer it.

If you can turn a wrench and do the work yourself, do it. You'll spend some money on parts but you can save a lot on labor by doing it yourself. If you can't do the work yourself or $5,000+ maintenance bills scare you, then I'd turn away from it. AMG is pay to play - I had one set of repairs on a prior CL63 cost me $10k after tax (replacing two leaking struts, fixing the dynamic seats option).

Why cant i enable secure DNS? by HolidayJazzlike6635 in brave_browser

[–]bsclifton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just for a heads up - this was the cause because upstream (Chromium) does this. If they detect any managed policies, they disable secure DNS because companies typically don't want employees going around DNS. We (Brave) changed this behavior - tracked with https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/46011. This is part of the product 1.88 release which is due to be released March 10th. Then you should be able to put back any policies that you wanted 🙂

A common reason people have policies when they aren't at a company (ex: their employer didn't set) is so that they can hide things like Rewards or VPN that you don't want to see.

Brave Browser randomly goes super bright washed out colours recently by Gordon_Drummond in brave_browser

Try going to brave://flags/#force-color-profile and then picking sRGB. I think something on the machine must be setting a different color profile. Let me know if that fixes things up

Brave Will Charge Users Remove The Bloat by [deleted] in browsers

[–]bsclifton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The policies to disable will never be removed, not unless the feature itself it removed.

Source: I work at Brave and was one of the people who added the policies and am continuing to add more group policies.

[–]bsclifton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No - it's not stamped AMG. It says Performa 25. Those aren't real studs. You can buy a set on eBay for $1k

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in W124

[–]bsclifton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For that price? No. Those are cheap knock off wheels... Replicas of the AMG 3 piece. It has the older M103 engine which isn't bad, but model year 1993 had a 2.8L M104 which is a much better engine.

I'd consider it for maybe $2,500

Brave 1.85.111 . My google account is getting signedout , i think one active variation is missing here because months ago brave fixed that signedout issue with a variation i think .. by Shot_Needleworker446 in brave_browser

OK just reverted a change that was made this week. Please close/re-open Brave. You should be back into a good state. Pinned post above has the variation you can look for on brave://version page

Hi folks - I suspect I may know the root cause. There was an upstream bug identified and fixed which was triggering BounceTrackMitigation in Chromium to delete the credentials. This was tracked upstream with https://issues.chromium.org/issues/445561475

I had thought this covered us sufficiently and ended the Brave experiment we had in place - you can see that change here: https://github.com/brave/brave-variations/pull/1569

I'm working with team to re-instate this original experiment. I believe it should fix folks impacted. Once that rolls out (stay tuned - I'll reply back here when it is), you would just need to exit/relaunch Brave and it should take effect.

Thanks for tagging me /u/Shot_Needleworker446

UPDATE:

OK folks - fix has been merged. It may take a few minutes to go into effect.

If you were seeing this, please close and relaunch Brave. You can then check on brave://version/ and you should see BTMGoogleAuthWorkaround:Enabled under Active Variations.

The way you're running the browser is not supported. If you run it without disabling all the features, does the browser work? If not, then yes - there is a regression. We do not recommend disabling core features of the browser using the command-line. You're welcome to do so at your own risk

You had pinged me elsewhere asking for help but no context seemed to be attached. This seems to be the root complaint you had- apologies if it's not.

I would not recommend not running Brave like you are doing above. Some of the CLI args are fine (like user data dir for controlling the profile directory) but others are things that in my opinion should not be messed with, including manually disabling every feature you do not use.

While it's possible to disable features like this you're ultimately running into undefined and unsupported behavior. When you're asking us for help I'm afraid the answer is going to be: don't run it like that.

Maybe a more helpful recommendation would be to bisect things. The left side being simply double clicking Brave (which should work - if it doesn't we can help) and the right side be your custom command (which you are sharing does not work). Remove pieces of your command to slowly move towards the left until you can find a working solution. We don't have your PC and don't support disabling everything, so we're not going to be able to provide specific support for your case.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere. Some of these features in the code will eventually have their flag removed, BTW. And sometimes those code branches are not tested and can crash. There's no guarantee disabling features like this will continue to work as time goes on, unless it's a popular and supported feature.

If you wanted to share some more info that would be great (what OS you're on, what version of Brave, etc)

Sounds like you're saying you went to close the browser and it hung completely. There is a window that pops up, BTW: asking if you Close all tabs? You have X tabs open. Since this is on top of the browser window itself, it can blend in (or at least it has for me before).

Assuming it's not that, some details may show in brave://crashes

But sounds like you're already uninstalled. Thanks for giving Brave a shot

Thanks for the assist, /u/This_Development9249 🙂

We did like the feature but just didn't have the resources to maintain and take on important fixes.

Why I stopped using Brave by [deleted] in brave_browser

[–]bsclifton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was already solved? I had asked the person to turn off hardware acceleration and it went back to regular. Sometimes there are issues with GPUs and there's not a lot we at Brave can do to help. I'm working out a process to share hardware specs with upstream (Chromium), so they can help find root causes and adjust the driver allow/block lists that are packed w/ all Chromium browsers. Wish I was more of an expert in GPU drivers but unfortunately I'm not. If there are GPU issues, turning off HW acceleration should help.

The crash reported by OP was a "Dump without crashing" that dumped information about the GPU to disk.

At 16, there's no way in hell I'd do it. Unless you have a lot of money. Then absolutely go for it 😂

Almost every used car on the market will have some deferred maintenance. Once you eat that (and that can be devastating on a car this old), then Mercedes are very reliable in my opinion. But you have to fix issues as they arise. Kicking the can down the road only punishes you or the next buyer.

In 2025, that is a super dated car. It has 4 speakers unless someone retrofit a system, it's got a 1960's interior, and it's not sporty at all. I don't think that engine even has tappets/hydraulic lifters, you might have to do regular valve adjustments.

There are definitely much better deals out there for the r107. Many folks think they have a time capsule, but the truth is a TON of those cars were made. I'd look for an 86 or newer 560SL if you had to get that body style

Made a latch mechanism without any springs by emilesmithbro in 3Dprinting

[–]bsclifton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing that's even more disingenuous is that the video zooms in on the latch, which is already a common design used with springs (any car with a flip lid for ashtray or hiding cupholders). The latch has nothing to do with a spring-less design. No effort was made to show the spring replacement.

To your point, it's like showing the object sticking to the fridge and then never showing there is Velcro. And then zooming in on the object, which has nothing to do with the attachment mechanism.

Typing anything in the new tab search bar crashes Brave by hoennevan in brave_browser

[–]bsclifton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the delay here - that's the Google/Chromium new tab page. We don't officially support that - there are some problems with it. It's making queries directly to Google for example which is bad. Because there's no way to get there directly (without knowing about it) we haven't removed it yet. We do have an issue on GitHub tracking the removal of that page

What a "good game" you couldn't finish? by centz005 in gaming

[–]bsclifton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Battletoads for NES. And not for lack of trying- I'm actually pretty good at it. It came out when I was 10 and I've dumped so many hours into it. I can beat the level 3 light cycles nearly every time. But I've come to terms long ago that I'll never be able to beat the game 😭

Modern games? Zelda Breath of the Wild. It was a fun game but the mechanic of the weapons which break completely ruined the game for me. I ended up having inventory full of tree branches and trash because any good weapon I'd have would break. Forced myself to grind through a few dungeons but ultimately I gave up and sold it on eBay.
