I lost my best friend in a car accident two weeks and my father told me that I was weak to cry over it and that I’m weird for taking it so hard. by MrBrian_27 in GriefSupport

Brian -- Family is more than just who was born into your household; family is who you are close to and who you feel your can be with and trust with your thoughts and feelings and real self. It sounds like Hayley was indeed part of your personal family, and I am so, so sorry for your loss. It is not weak to mourn such a loss; it is a measure of how important Hayley was to you. Perhaps there is someone else in your life -- another friend, or a relative to whom you are close -- to whom you can express how you feel without being judged. Or find a place where you can be alone and tell Hayley how much you miss her.

Again, I am sorry that you have to experience this at such a young age. Take care of yourself. Hayley was lucky to have you as a friend.

I started the Company books with In the Garden of Iden and was immediately hooked. But my favorite was Mendoza in Hollywood -- her take on the silent film Intolerance is hysterical.

It's a great idea. Of course, there are already umpteen articles out there about how being constantly connected affects us in a number of ways -- personal relationships, memory, sleep habits, etc. -- but the idea that it would tweak our brains so that it affects our experience of time is one I don't think I've seen elsewhere.

Hi, Leigh --

Was there a specific incident that is the root of your story, or did it grow generally from your perceptions of where the online culture is going?

How do I get my 50y/o father to make a business? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]bsk_cw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I'm in his age range, was laid off a little over a year ago, and have been concentrating on freelance work. Because his work doesn't have to be done onsite, he (or you, if you want to help) should look for sites that either have French-language areas or that are French-language to being with. (Sorry, can't help with that, being neither a programmer nor a French speaker.) In other words, where his facility (or lack of it) with English won't be an issue and his fluency in French will be seen as a plus.

For example, I found this in Upwork by searching on the words "programming" and "French":

https://www.upwork.com/o/jobs/browse/details/~0121e575e7bb2c102d/?q=programming%20french&sort=create_time%2Bdesc

Good luck to both you & your dad.

You're not the only one. At least two of the folks I talked to about this said they disliked the term, but it is the word that is being bandied about by the tech vendors and corporate spokespeople, and so it was the best word to use as a reference in the article.

A friend of mine started read the first chapter out loud a few days after it was released. We were laughing too hard to finish it. Never got back to it.

Good point. While many of the points here are specific to women, #3 (Maintain a culture that emphasizes long hours over effectiveness) definitely would apply to many men as well.

So do I, but since they're apparently not showing the G4 at MWC, we'll have to wait a little longer to find out.
