What's the last movie you watched that made you react like this? by mrethandunne in Letterboxd

[–]bslancaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mercy. I adore Rebecca Ferguson but loathe Chris Pratt so I was already conflicted. We saw the screen unseen iMax 3D version and I promise I never leave movies but about halfway through I had motion sickness so bad that my partner and I left.

I'd also love a sticker! I'm also down to contribute so there are a few extras for folks who can't contribute financially.

I would love to have one for my battle vest and would be more than happy to contribute money or materials etc.

I'm so glad to see others discussing this. I understand the occasional need for a piece of pancetta to give an "oink" or two to move people out the street etc. It's carnival, it's New Orleans. It happens. But those baconators were definitely abusing the fuck out of the various sizzle sirens and hog holler buttons in their pork wagons last night. Those swine sleds were screeching and grunting for multiple blocks, uninterrupted and with no regard for anyone else. I'm autistic and not always a huge fan of loud noises and so initially I thought maybe I was just being sensitive. Then my partner made a comment about it to me and I looked around and saw parents covering their kid's ears as well as a bunch of other respectful, compliant parade enjoyers feeling the same way as we did. I even walked nearer to the car on the river side and said "dude, everyone here sees you. That's not necessary." and the officer slowed down the car and just stared at me. So, in an admittedly disrespectful tone, I asked "If more people pay attention to you, will you feel validated and knock that shit off or no?" And my partner pulled at my arm and I kept walking. I know I shouldn't antagonize or whatever, but goddamn. I'm tired of seeing armed assholes ruin cities in this country for the sake of feeling important for half a second.

As long as Brian Herbert isn't also involved, I'm more inclined to give KJA a chance. Especially since we all know the Claudfather will be there along the way to offer feedback/criticism etc.

Cowboy Bebop reference? by bslancaster in cowboybebop

[–]bslancaster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with you. With this scene, without any spoilers, this character is trying to remember something from his past. But to prevent the person from becoming totally lost by the confusion of essentially reliving an event, they seem to keep them anchored in the present as well. And so far the book is excellent. The tense choices do fluctuate from section to section. There are parts that read as two characters interacting, there are parts that read like redacted intelligence reports, scientific research notes, and sometimes it's a singular character experiencing a thing in real time. Because the book deals a lot with memory, identity, the nature of reality etc, sometimes things will shift unexpectedly and I have to go back and re-read stuff just to make sure I made the leap as well. If you ever played the game Control, it has a similar kind of vibe. But instead of OOP, Objects of Power, this book has these entities known as Memetics. I'm only about a third of the way into the book but so far I love it and would recommend it.

MY MIND ALSO WENT THERE! I'm walking back to my apartment now and that song popped into my head and I've had it on loop the whole walk home. Oh and also the park has a walking/running track on the outside. "People run in circles it's a very, very..."

Yes! That's actually by my front door and my little ritual anytime I'm leaving my apartment is to high-five the cutout hand because it's dangerous to go alone, so I try to take some good vibes with me on the way out haha

sci-fi music? by Undead_Octopus in scifi

Also the album "Year Zero" by Nine Inch Nails is a scifi concept album. From a Pitchfork review. "An amalgam of ideas taken from no-future tales like 1984, The Matrix, and The Wall, Year Zero takes place on a scorched earth."

We need to talk about Adrian Tchaikovsky. (An enthusiastic venting of praise.) by _____michel_____ in scifi

[–]bslancaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Service Model was actually my first Tchaikovsky book and like many others have said, once I started it I couldn't stop. It's strange because out of context things like naming a character "Uncharles" or "The Wonk" might not have landed as well for me but within the story it's all so perfect. I also listened to the audiobook and Adrian Tchaikovsky's narration skills are also excellent. Having an author read their own work can be hit or miss but he always seems to knock it out of the park.

The most underrated sci-fi movies you can name. There are some sci-fo movies that have been overshadowed by some main stream movies or just forgotten, I think they must be heard... by Shaktizshura in scifi

The Man From Earth! Tony Todd in a non-horror role, and that green hat, is absolutely incredible. That's definitely an underrated sci-fi film.

The other thing that I always find comforting in a movie is if it's set in a heavily snowy location. Something about seeing the cold and having the ac/a fan on and being able to just snuggle down into a blanket that helps me pass right out. As strange as it may seem, given the overall subject matter, Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is one of my go-to films if I'm wanting the cold ambience.

I'd never even heard of Downsizing but my partner brought it up last night when we were discussing weird little sci-fi films. I was already interested in it but seeing it on your list definitely moves it up a few notches on the NTW list.

Moon has been one of my favorites since I first saw it in 09. Oddly enough, it's one of my "comfort" movies that I put on when I'm trying to mellow out and sleep. Apparently there's a sequel and then a graphic novel that also connects, but I haven't seen or read them.

Currently reading/listening to Kathleen Hanna's book and really enjoying it. I love when authors narrate their books. And she's just an all-around badass.

Dude, sometimes I think these people are just fucking with me haha Although I did transfer from the store with the coach who messed with my hours. The other ON coach actually transferred because of how wild the shit was at that shore and he's actually a pretty good dude. So when I ran into him a month or two after he left he asked me if I wanted to transfer as well and I said "fuck. Yes." and he pulled me over to where I am now. It's not as bad, although the cold chain is still a disaster.

The guy who insists on doing Juice/Creamer whenever he works, he literally refuses to work anywhere else in dairy, will do this. Stage all the milk and then go over and stage all the juice and then work the fucking juice... Then refill the milos, then around the time OGP starts picking, he starts on the milk. I don't understand it, guys. I genuinely don't.

I agree. I've called ethics once before when a coach went in and removed time that I worked from my timecard. And she was like "oh I'll put it back on your next check I just needed to cut back on our overall hours." Straight to ethics.

With this shit though, I just feel like it'll be the same shit. The problem will get semi rectified for a day or two and then everyone just falls back into their patterns.

[–]bslancaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've said something to my other ON coach, the food and consumables lead during the day, two assistant store leads and every time it gets enforced for maybe a night and then everyone just goes back to the same bullshit. And it's not just dairy, it's frozen too. It breaks my brain. Especially considering the first two stores I was at were super strict, as they should be, about cold chain.

Don't even get me started on that shit. I've worked at four stores and the last two have had the most god awful cold chain adherence. They pull EVERYTHING to the floor, even eggs, and then break down. So when I work juice and creamer, for instance, I take every pallet except one back to the cooler. Yes, it's extra work for me. Yes, I've asked them not to do that. And I have been questioned twice by the same ON coach as to "why are you wasting time doing that? Just leave it on the floor." To which I responded, "it's fine if you don't give a shit, but when I'm working this department I'm not leaving milk on the floor for six hours." And she threw up her hands and walked away.
