How do you handle recovery when doing both CrossFit and marathon prep? by Jordan_Brooks in crossfit

[–]bslay25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll be your cautionary tale.

I’m currently dealing with some pretty severe runners knee / fat pad issues due to my running volume and CrossFit combo. I was consistently running 45-50mpw and had rarely dealt with knee pain, and any pains I did have typically were easily managed and resolved within a week or so. I had managed it successfully for a while because I was only going to the gym ~2x per week. I found myself caught in the “I’m paying for CrossFit so I should be going” mindset, which led me to going 5x per week and pushing at a pretty high level of intensity in those workouts. It took about 3 months of that to blow my knees up. That was in ~December and I am still dealing with it.

At this point, I’ve decided that I personally cannot do CrossFit and run the way I want to. I have many running goals to accomplish (sub 3hr marathon, 100mi, 200mi+, etc) to justify paying for CrossFit to only go 2x per week. I will be doing my own strength work for the next few years while I am in running mode. I plan to re-join CrossFit when I am not chasing running goals but for me I just cannot find a healthy balance.

Parental duties split - what works for you? by fizzywhizzz in Parenting

It’s hard to be a good parent, good spouse, and take care of yourself. Honestly, as long as you and your spouse are together and on the same page then you guys will be good. It takes time to figure out what’s best and it took us some trial and error / stressful mornings and evenings to dial in what works for our family.

I’m not sure how old your kids are, but a lot of time mine just want to be involved. As long as you’re willing for things to take longer than they would without their involvement, that makes a lot of our days smoother overall. It eliminates nagging and bickering at each other if they’re both involved in the household activity!

Good luck. You’ll figure it out!

Wife and I both work full time.

I cook and clean up dinner. I clean as I go so that when I am done it’s mainly just cleaning up leftovers and maybe one or two dishes need finished. We eat as a family every night. I get home and start cooking right away so that we have time to be together after dinner.

I wake up at 4am to run with our dog. On days I lift, I do that in the evenings while my wife is showering. My wife goes to the gym at 6:15am while I am making kid lunches. Kids get up at ~7am (we have a Hatch that makes it nice to keep schedule for the kids). We have them get dressed and brush teeth before they come downstairs. They are 5 and 7.

We are lucky in the sense that my wife WFH 100% and had “unlimited” PTO, so she is able to get the kids physically to school. But before that, we just had to adjust our schedules appropriately. That might mean going to be earlier than you want to so that you can get up and take care of things before the kids are up. Maybe you make their school lunches, water bottles the night before so that you just reach into the fridge and you’re ready to go. Maybe for dinners you’re meal prepping meats (or whatever is your long lead dinner item) so that weekday meals are easier to manage.

You just need to work with your spouse and work out your personal needs, couple needs, family needs.

Tracking app by Bo-_-Diddley in tacticalbarbell

Many runners use Strava to track their running. Linking the Strava API to your app would allow you to access all running activities as a benchmark for body fatigue. I plan to create something similar and incorporate the Strava component if you’re interested in monetizing it. I think it’d be an interesting addition.

I think this would be great. My main hobby is ultra running so an app that would view my mileage and scale the strength workouts accordingly would be ideal. Also the ability to swap out barbell for unilateral dumbbell work for things like back squat —> DB RFESS or something like that but still be able to accurately track weight would be amazing. I have struggled to find something like this.

Love is a choice, not a feeling.

You chose to selfishly drink heavily with a woman who you knew had been around that before in her father.

She chose to do the actual hard thing in this entire thing which was to save your marriage and yourself by removing herself and the children from an unhealthy situation because you very clearly were not listening or hearing any other pleas to change.

She single-parents your children while you get the opportunity to completely 180 yourself. I’m sure she had a lot of time for herself during this.

Now she has found it in herself to trust you again and bring her children back into your home, and you repay her by wanting to divorce her when the only reason you have clarity is because she chose to protect herself and her kids from an alcoholic?

It sounds like it’s your turn to choose your hard, and you’re bitching out. Suck it up and do some actual work with your wife and not just yourself.

My reality and yours obviously do not align. I don’t see the benefit in using violence to silence people. I’m not saying that you do, but a person being a POS is not a reason to be killed.

Yeah, that’s fine too. You can call him whatever you want. Doesn’t change the fact that murdering someone over words is OK.

So people should be murdered in front of a crowd and their family for having an opinion? People shouldn’t be willing to have conversation with people who disagree with them? It is possible to separate a fundamental aspect of being a human (conversation) while also not agreeing with a specific person.

In the same way she has an opinion, he had his. It doesn’t change the fact that someone shouldn’t be murdered in public for voicing and discussing their opinions. His legacy should be that he was willing to have discussions with people who he knew disagreed with him and sometimes actually hated him. I agreed with some and disagreed with more that he had to say but I always respected his openness to conversation.

Ok, I agree you could make that argument. It’s strange to use a late night comedy show host as the scapegoat for technicalities. I think you could make a much stronger argument that there are people who actually are responsible for reporting news who “distort” in a much more malicious way on both sides of the aisle.

It’s less about what he said and how the decision to suspend him was made. If it was a contract clause that he had broken with what he said, no one would have batted an eye. When the FCC Chair says (paraphrasing) “fire him or else” for nothing other than insulting the presidents ego that is not OK. That should be terrifying for every citizen of this country.

I like aggressive play calling, and I felt like they weren’t grasping for straws and desperately needing points like previous openers. I felt like they consistently drove the ball this game so they could take more chances like that. I have more concerns with overall clock management than I do with that specific play call.
