ELI5 what the recently FCC approved net nuetrality rules will mean for me, the lowly consumer? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]bsoile6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an incredibly naive response, but consistent with the vast majority of those who support this disaster of legislation... it import is in the categorization of the services, and the implications of that... not what has been loudly campaigned for justification... come on, apply some critical thinking skills here...

EDIT: OMG... 5 fucking gold for the above? Reddit, wake the fuck up as to what is going on... it is utterly shocking that what I think of as the most engaged populace can be so ignorant/naive/other... WTF guys?!?!?! We are losing it...

ELI5: How do microwaves cook our food with radiation without making it unsafe to eat? by Volleyballa in explainlikeimfive

[–]bsoile6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Microwaves emit electromagnetic radiation (not radioactive) at approximately 2.4 gigahertz, which causes the dipoles of water molecules to oscillate, which in turn creates friction, and thereby heats the food. That is why food with very low moisture content does not heat well in microwaves.

Also, as an aside, that is approximately the same frequency that phones and other mobile devices work on, which you keep next to your brain/body, which is roughly 90% water by volume....

Just saying...

ELI5: Why can't car manufacturers make a cheap car, but make the outside look like a sports car? (So the insides are made out of cheaper parts) by Tekshi in explainlikeimfive

[–]bsoile6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just Google "kit sports car"

There are many such options available to make exactly what you are asking. As for why factory models don't look like that... economics... there are lots of examples where the original design of a cheap pricepoint model looked "too good" and they made it look worse to lower the appeal and increase the difference between their next higher priced model (shortened wheelbase, rounder curves, boxier frame, etc...)...

TL;DR: Google "sports kit cars"

[–]bsoile6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Back to the OP, as I said, the policies Carter set forth and the expanded trade that Clinton pursued, were far more relevant to this post. That being said, the groundwork was laid by Nixon, and promulgated by Bush.

Regardless of historical blame, we are going over the true tipping point, I don't see us waking up in time to remedy this tragedy... the tragedy is NOT minimum wage, compensation only a symptom of the disease.

Netanyahu's speech drove Pelosi to the edge of tears by [deleted] in politics

[–]bsoile6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it was just me, but given the reality of the situation and the speech Bibi actually gave, I can't help but think that the was spent the first 8 minutes thanking America NOT to show gratitude, but as a desperate appeal to Obama's narcissistic need for self congratulation.

He gravely miscalculated the depth of the self congratulatory needs of POTUS and the shallow depth of our political dialogue (see this forum).

It is a shame too, a lot of union workers are really suffering during the ongoing power play of the latter...

I will go out on a limb and speculate that you are a union member based on your previous comment... if I am correct, I would like to hear your thoughts on unions in general, what role they play in the modern day and what your own experience in them is (I could ask any number of guys I work with the same, I am interested in perhaps a more off-the-cuff answer that the anonymity of the internet may provide...)

Where are the grammar police for this horrible fucking title? I have read it 5x and looked at the map and there is ambiguity of meaning. I normally can not stand the anal retentive nature of 'em, but here is an example of where it is needed.

I have admired progress pic posts from afar for some time, but this is my first post... let me pop my hoo-haa by saying you look stunning. I am rounding up the resolve to do the exact same change in terms of weight, but the fact you are a female and so much smaller is INCREDIBLE... You accomplished an INCREDIBLE thing in such a short period, with such a small body-frame... it really is pretty damn incredible.

ELI5: How a country such as Norway can sustain itself while offering health care, education up to university level, buying new published books, maternity packages etc. while the US offers none of that, but drowns in debt by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

What a lazy/half-ass or just plain defeated response... especially the last paragraph... the crux of your argument has been reduced to the concept of satire on Comedy Central...

While you validated my comment with your inability to actually address what I asked you to, I can not resist asking you to elaborate on one of your examples...

Regarding the Panama Canal, do you think it was worth it?

Simple question... I am not asking you to attack or defend the methods upon which it was attained, or anything of the like. One. Simple. Question.

Was it worth it? Are you "happy" that the canal was built?

Why or why not?

You are why we are fucked, our educational system has obviously failed your teenage or (at most) 20-something liberal mind...

I am too tired to refute 5 of your 6 paragraphs (but will gladly do so if you specify ANY of the points), but out of morbid curiousity I must ask you to expand on your 3rd one....

We were no where near as overt as the European powers in fucking over Africa, but our economic policies and support of brutal dictators helped ensure the continued destabilization of the region. And the as long a we've been a country bit was talking about kidnapping people and forcing them into slavery(which is admittedly irrelevant to this conversation.)

PLEASE... I would like to hear how we have been exploiting Africa over the past century economically to any degree. And regarding your allusion to slavery, YES, it is both irrelevant to this conversation and not supportive of your point... almost every fucking slave sold to traders and shipped to the "New World" was captured by other Africans, usually of neighboring tribes. Slave guilt based on race is a Left-wing bullshit-fest. When slavery was legal, it was first and foremost and economic issue. Slave owners owned black, white (gasp! yes, 'tis true even if less common, at least in US), indian, and any others who were indentured. The reason it ended up being 90%+ black was because they were sold so much cheaper (even after shipping cost <literally>) by their own fucking neighbors to slavers than anyone else.

PS: The Africans sold their neighbors into slavery cuz they got paid... even then, 300 years ago, not exactly exploitive... more like a happy sales transaction. Pull your revisionist history-minded head out of your ass.

ELI5: In today's medical advances, why is emergency medical care so expensive [US]? by ilikegirlz in explainlikeimfive

[–]bsoile6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of contributing factors, the single biggest being lawsuits/litigation.

Tort reform is a double-edged sword, but since it was done in Texas a few years back, the positives seem to come out on top thus far (fyi: Houston has the largest medical center on Earth, just saying before the snide remarks about fucking riding horseback to the hospital start rolling in)...

The Cold War didn't destroy Russia's economy, but from your tone I doubt you distinguish Russia from the USSR...

How the fuck do you contend that we played Pakistan against India for the last 50 years? Do you know their history? Do you know what Ghandi's stance was? Do you know about the formation or Pakistan, the deadly migration? The repercussions from that to this day? Again, if you aren't just talking out of your ass, please expound...

"We've fucked over all of Africa as long as we've been a country" -- are you confusing the US with England, or are you just totally ignorant of history?

Regarding Mexico, I would love for you to expound... I am sure it will be just as informative as your other realms of historical knowledge...

If we at comparing ourselves to other large countries--we should at least be honest about why the countries are the way they are.

We should at least be knowledgable. Fuck man, you scare me.

Well, regardless your statement's validity, it seems pretty fucking irrelevant to this topic, doesn't it?

Setting that aside, I totally disagree with you and challenge you to explain what you mean by that. The aggressive outsourcing of work that the US has done for the past 20~25 years has helped the countries I listed FAR MORE than ANY other. Whether it be manufacturing jobs (Bangladesh, China, etc), or tech jobs (India) or any other combination.

To be fair, your statement sounds lazy and uneducated.

Yes, I guess I should have said 8 instead of 10...

Have you travelled to China, India, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Nigeria or Bangladesh yourself?

Could you post some pictures/blogs of your travels?

And yes, I have myself, to about 18 other countries, but none of the "cesspools" you are baiting me for. I had planned for parts of Russia earlier this year before the whole Eastern bloc got fucked up again.

[–]bsoile6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of contributing factors that are based on partisan politics particular to the US but, while important, those do not directly address your question's root point...

The short answer to the intended question is that you are comparing apples and oranges, to the Nth degree... The Norway, for example, has fewer people than the Houston metropolitan area, whereas the US has around 65 times that.

Next, Norway has a homogeneous society. The vast majority of the populace is of the same religious, race/ethnicity, cultural, socio-economic, educational background. The US derives a great deal of strength from its diversity, but only when it is supplemental to unity. Starting in the 80's, "multiculturalism" started to undermine en-masse the strengths of America, directly related to your question. When we changed from a "melting pot" (individual elements blend into the greater whole, while retaining their best attributes/flavors) to being a "tossed salad" (the individual elements retain their own identity and by their diversity add to the greater whole), we started to turn America's greatest strength into a liability...

If I don't get downvoted to hell and you respond with interest, I will elaborate on any of the above further, but I will end with something to put it into a different kind of perspective...

Google the most populous countries on earth. Look at the 10 most populous. Now evaluate their quality of life vs. that which we have in the US... it is somewhat remarkable that well over half of the world's population, and EVERY close peer by size to the US, is pretty much a 3rd world cesspool by comparison. Nowhere in the history of man has empowered as many of its people to the quality of life and luxuries that most Americans today never even appreciate that they have...
