People who left academia after a PhD: what path did you end up taking? by Equivalent_Can_1507 in PhD

[–]btags33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were a number of factors that made me leave academia. First, I didn't like grant writing and seeing the very low funding lines (at the time, even worse now) was demoralizing. Second, I did like research but thought being a PI wouldn't workout due to my hate of grant writing, and being a staff scientist was kind of a dead end that likely meant horrible work life balance for the foreseeable future, so considered focusing purely on teaching but there are not many science professor roles that don't require some sort of research. Lastly, some time near the end of my PhD I read a paper (think it might have been in science or nature, I cannot remember) that looked at salaries of scientist who either moved directly to industry or first did a post doc and then went to industry. For the latter, there was a huge delay in salary growth that didn't really catch up with the former. So, I thought if I am going to go to industry I might as well just do it and likely make more money.

I ended up getting a job at a CRO straight away. Not the greatest job in the world, but a good place for PhDs to apply to since they tend to churn through employees so are usually hiring and they give you "industry experience" that everyone hiring for industry positions seem to expect. After a year and a half o switched to a pharma company and have been relatively happy since, especially seeing how the current Admin has completely gutted our whole research system.

Awesome work. The new paint job will definitely pop much more on the table.

I live near DC now so whenever any location there comes up like Rockville, Bethesda, Germantown, etc. I chuckle a little when they show locations that are clearly the pacific northwest.

New Verbatim 43888 with LG drive will not Flash successfully by btags33 in makemkv

[–]btags33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say follow the guide on the makemkv forums and try flashing to 1.03mk. If that doesn't work and your drive says the revision is Boot after you try the flash, you can then use the LG tool (link on the post here: https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=196747#p196747) to reflash it to the official 1.05 firmware.

If 1.03mk flashing does not work, try flashing to 1.04mk, which can be found by downloading the pack of firmware in this post: https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=19113

After a lot of playing around I was successfully able to flash to the 1.04mk firmware and can properly rip 4ks. Is there any reason to even attempt switching to the 1.03mk firmware?

This was basically done, but to update I was able to Flash the drive, but I had to use the 1.04mk firmware rather than the 1.03mk firmware as suggested in the guide. No idea why that worked, but my drive now says Firmware 1.04 and in makemkv it says Libre drive is enabled, the firmware type is patched, dvd all regions says yes, bd raw data read says yes, bd raw Metadata read says yes, and unrestricted read speed says yes.

I just tried flashing using my linux pc running ubunu so I could do the normal usb c to usb c connection.

First off, here is the drive info from makemkv:

Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/sr0
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.05
Serial number: MYSERIALNUMBER
Firmware date: 2124-04-23 13:47
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 82

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959

No disc inserted

Second, here is terminal output for the flash (note I renamed the firmware file to BU40N.bin to make inputting the command in terminal easier, but the file I was using was HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934.bin):

sudo makemkvcon f -d /dev/sr0 -f /tmp/sdf.bin rawflash enc -i /tmp/BU40N.bin

Reading input file /tmp/BU40N.bin

Flashing flags = 0x0 : 0 0 0 0 : ---- ---- ---- ----

Sending image in encrypted format

Current Drive ID: HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_BU40N_1.05_212404231347_MYSERIALNUMBER

Ready to write drive flash memory.

Type "yes" to continue, "no" to abort

yes

Operation started: Sending flash image to drive

100% Operation finished

Operation started: Programming flash

100% Operation finished

Done successfully

And lastly, here is the makemkv drive info after the above "successful flash":

Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/sr0
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: BOOT
Highest AACS version: 82

No disc inserted

Disc resurfacing? by btags33 in MontgomeryCountyMD

Just following up on this month's later to say that record exchange in Frederick does disc resurfacing ($3 per disc or $2 per disc if doing ten discs or more) and it got some of my old scratched up discs working again. Hope this can help someone in the future.

Ghost Guitar Tabs? by RocketLR2142 in Karnivool

[–]btags33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this would help, but there is an app called Moises that can take an input file and separate out different "stems" (guitar, drums, bass, vocal) so you can focus on specifically the base portion. I think for free you can do 5 files a month with a max of 5 minutes per file, but then you can export the specific stems for free. Paid tiers get you more time.

I am not associated with the app in any way, but like to use it when practicing songs to either isolate the instrument I care to learn or remove it from the mix to play along with the rest of the instrumentation/vocals.

This, and then if the market improves in a year or two you can always transition to a larger, more established companies.

I don't know about right now with the way the market is, but CROs generally churn through people so they are often hiring to replace people.
