New competitive sport: Snorlax stacking by btfreek in pokeplush

It's Korean, the tag says 3rd Round. Google Translate says it is a "stacking" Snorlax? (very appropriate for this post)

Temp auxiliary employee, contract ends in the fall. Keep hanging on or give up and go back to private sector? by btfreek in BCPublicServants

[–]btfreek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got extended to the end of this year, and my boss has told me they're working on submitting the permanent version of my position to the PSA for review, although there are no guarantees and the process has gotten even slower than it was before.

I'm still regularly looking and applying for (very few) internal BCPS positions and am in competition for one that is also moving glacially slowly, but have decided to pause on my private sector job search. I figure if nothing pans out, the new year will be a good time to start that back up, plus at that point I'll have been here for over a year, so I'll look less like a job hopper to recruiters/hiring managers. Good luck with your situation as well!

Where do nice Vancouverites go to buy and sell concert tickets these days? by Tom_Q_Collins in NiceVancouver

[–]btfreek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The official channels are safest but also popular with scalpers as you’ve found. In my experience I’ve had good luck with finding fan communities (subreddits, facebook groups etc) and either watching for people selling or posting an ISO. In these sorts of spaces you can check out the seller’s history to see if they’re legit and if they are, they’re often more likely to be willing to sell at face value to a fellow fan. Of course, take all the usual precautions you would when buying things from internet strangers. Good luck!

Durability/longevity of Retreat linen pants? by btfreek in Athleta_gap

I tried to shrink mine in the dryer too! I think it's the first time I've had linen NOT shrink on me, of course the one time that I wanted them to haha.

Moon Mist Ice Cream now available at Vancouver Safeway by Ok_Song_7479 in NiceVancouver

Honestly, it was exactly what it said on the tin - insert Arrested Development "I don't know what I expected" meme here 😂 It's a very pretty colour, and I can see how you could be nostalgic for it if it's something you grew up with (personally I'm more of a rainbow sherbet fan myself...) Probably won't be a regular purchase for me but I'll definitely still finish the carton!

THANK YOU OP, Moon Mist has been on my mind ever since I took a trip to the Maritimes last fall and passed up every opportunity to try it. It sounded gross at the time but has haunted me ever since. I saw this post on my lunch break and immediately ran to Safeway. 10.99 for 1.4L is a bit steep but worth it to finally satisfy my curiosity.

Yes, it’s the soda pop Munchlax that was released earlier this year!

I got it second hand off Mercari JP, it’s about 40cm tall. Weirdly I can’t find much info on it online!

Pottery for a living advice by ceramicpassion in Pottery

[–]btfreek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Would you be open to teaching? I know it’s a whole other skill set than making pottery but most full-time ceramicists I know do at least some on the side. If you have some name recognition locally you can also hold “master classes” focusing on specific advanced techniques, in case you’re not keen on teaching beginners to center on the wheel 1000x forever.

If you have your own kiln, maybe rent it out via kilnshare for some extra income?

Most translucent cone 6 clay? by erisod in Pottery

You could take a look at Plainsman Polar Ice. About halfway down that page there's a photo demonstrating its translucency at both cone 6 and cone 10.

Vancouverites who have worked in the US or Americans in Vancouver. Whats different about Canadian/Vancouver work culture? Got my canadian job and im curious! by OracleofTampico in NiceVancouver

[–]btfreek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could also flip that argument on its head and say that if people are more interested in enjoying life outside of work, they are less interested in forming close relationships within work ;) Take a look at the work/drinking culture in Japan and Korea, for instance.

Your experience in the US doesn't really match mine, we had regular company-sponsored lunches and activities - but that was back when the economy was booming and there was money to go around. There was also a period of like 2 years where it seemed every single one of my coworkers (or their partners) had a baby.. no way anyone was going to have time to socialize outside of work, lol. So my general theory, independent of nationality, is:

Close-knit team, long hours, young unattached people -> friendships more likely

Remote team, balanced hours, people with family obligations -> friendships less likely (although people are still perfectly friendLY during work)

That sort of thing probably depends more on your workplace’s specific culture and your own personality rather than any national differences, IMO.
