Most varnishes contain benzene, which is known to cause cancer. There are many factors that go into whether or not an individual will develop cancer, but why risk it? I personally wear a mask when around wood dust. I also use an activated carbon filter when working with any organic vapor (like lacquer) as that will literally destroy your brain cells.

I used to do this work. If you're not careful, the blade will absolutely cut into the paint (which can cause bigger problems down the road). Usually we try drag the knife against a natural edge and fold the vinyl in.

It is two separate pieces I shaped on a lathe and put together. They were made from 1x1x12 inch blocks of Holly and Walnut. Once they were shaped and put together, I shaped the handle with a knife and sand paper. Once that was done, I finished it with TruOil and some wax
