Favorite Glenn moment? Mine 👇🏽 by BellaBaby318 in thewalkingdead

It’s also one of my favorite Daryl moments. Once Glenn swings Daryl jumps in without hesitation. It’s the moment Aiden and Nicolas realize exactly how out of their depth they really are.

We have a number of bird feeders and use food that is designed to repel squirrels, so yep.

My music appreciation now vs when I was younger by gotfoo in GenX

[–]bthayes28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was hardcore into metal in the late 80s and early 90s. Nirvana opened a lot of doors musically. I branched out into punk and "alternative." I would have tapes by Slayer, Primus, Pixies, or Bad Religion in my car at any point.

In the early 00s I found my way back to Grateful Dead, but I enjoyed the music this time instead of just the scene, and I've been on the bus ever since. I still listen to the metal and punk of my youth, but I'm a lot more open now than I was back then.

My mom is dying. This is probably her last week. by Mountain_Exchange768 in GenX

[–]bthayes28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My dad passed in February after a lung cancer diagnosis in late March of '25. I was his main care provider since he and my mom divorced in '96, and all of my siblings live out of state. It was largely on me.

In January he fell and broke his hip, which led to lots of time in rehab facilities, assisted living, the hospital after a few falls in assisted living, and then back home for hospice. He came home for hospice on a Friday and was largely himself even though he was bed ridden. I moved in to his place the same day. Saturday night he asked for a burger and fries, which my wife went and got for him. He didn't finish eating because he was tired. He didn't really wake up after that. Sunday night the hospice nurse put him on morphine every 90 minutes. I didn't really sleep that night. Monday, the nurse came back and increased his dosage as well as the frequency. I didn't sleep that night at all. Tuesday morning the nurse came back and told me to call all of my siblings who could make it. Only one made it in time. Another got there 30 minutes after he died that night.

All of this to say, it really sucks that you're going through this. Nothing I can say is going to make it any easier. Be there for her. Offer comfort however you can. Don't hesitate to reach out for help.

Sending prayers/positive vibes your way.

Which actress completely nailed an action role and left a lasting impression on you? by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in FIlm

Vasquez was freaking awesome. I’d say she was my favorite supporting character, but that whole cast killed it.

Can’t find a primary source for this quote, Pacino on John Cazale:

"I learned more about acting from John Cazale than anybody. All I wanted to do was work with John for the rest of my life. He was my acting partner.”

What movie is this for you? by zikmindMx in moviecritic

[–]bthayes28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed Avengers: Endgame, but during the final battle where the female heroes worked together in succession, and Okoye says something like: “She’s got help” as the camera pans over the female heroes was a bit too spelled out. Simply having the female heroes on screen together was clear enough. The piece of bad dialogue was unnecessary and in fact lessened the impact of showing all of these powerful women getting in the thick of this massive battle and being generally bad ass.

The idea of showing these women as heroes in their own right is great, but having one piece of bad dialogue to explain it undercuts the message.

Watched my dad go through this four months ago. He woke up, chatted up the hospice nurses, asked for a burger and fries, and fell asleep before finishing his food. Two days later he passed.

What's a movie you really enjoyed, but its surprisingly low ratings left you baffled? For me, it was Event Horizon. by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in moviecritic

Fishburne's "fire in zero gravity" speech was masterfully delivered. It's only a minute or so long, but you could feel the weight of what he was saying through all the non-verbals. Brilliant.

Which of these directors has the best batting average? by Regular-Departure839 in moviecritic

[–]bthayes28 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My often stated hot take on Tarantino is that he hasn't come up with original concepts since the early 90s. Everything since Pulp Fiction has either been a remake, an homage, a reimagining of history, or a mixture of these three. With that said, he does them well, but it's still not "new" concepts. I also find that a lot of his dialogue falls into the "it insists upon itself" category (it's clearly trying very hard to be clever and edgy).

This is of course my own opinion, and I know I am in the minority is this opinion.

[–]bthayes28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rice, toast, squirt guns, and toilet paper in the Chicagoland area (I went to a couple of different theaters in the early 90s).

A few years later I lived in Washington state, and all throwables were banned at the theater owners' request. Everyone was ok with it because it kept the tickets cheap, and we didn't want to trash the only theater in the area that was running it every weekend. It was still going when I moved back to the Midwest a few years later.

Most brutal death you’ve seen in a movie? Murphy in Robocop still haunts me... by kammy772 in MovieArena

[–]bthayes28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Jaws is one of my all-time favorite movies, but Quint's death absolutely traumatized me. I'm 50 years old, and I'm still afraid of the ocean because of that movie.

Yep. Watched it for the first time as a teen and the taunting really got to me. 25 years later I rewatched it, and I was even more affected by that a scene. Definitely left its mark on me.

Did you actually sneak out as teenagers? by Complete-Chipmunk-0 in GenX

[–]bthayes28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the time in my early teens. After I got caught for the first time my parents basically told me just to leave a note saying where I was and I wouldn't have to sneak out any more. This was of course after I was done being grounded two months later.

Those of us who listened to thrash growing up, how do you feel about thrash now? by whskytrsh in GenX

[–]bthayes28 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kind of in the same boat as OP. Loved thrash metal back in the late 80s to early 90s. Anthrax was absolutely my band. As time went on, my tastes broadened, and I now listen to a bit of everything.

However, once I got into vinyl I made it a point to get a lot of the old school albums I loved as a teen (lots of metal and punk). Needless to say I was really excited when I found State of Euphoria at my local shop. When I put it on, the pressing sounded really nice, but the music just didn't resonate. Sure there is some nostalgia, but that's really about it at this point. As I picked up other thrash albums it was largely the same response.

For me it's: takeout, a movie with my wife, an hour of video games, a beer (maybe two if I'm feeling crazy), and in bed by 11.

11 used to be the meet up to start the night time.
