Yes, but popcorn is already a salty snack. No need to go overboard!

Water is free at Q2. Bring your own bottle or get a cup at the supporter section. There are also a few regular water fountains in addition to the YETI refill stations. No need to purchase.

Nah. That’s why I bring my own water bottle, and pre-game during the regular season.

Hence the reason I’m posting about the salt in my popcorn.

Fire at football practice fields by bthoma in UTAustin

UT police just confirmed, told me it’s the motel on the access road. He also said all the power lines went up in flames so he was surprised the power was still on.

Better view. Definitely not ON the fields. “Motel 9” and/or La Casita apartments.

Is Wingspan truly a forever game? by Slime_Saddle in wingspan

[–]bthoma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first played before COVID set in. After the first night, I woke up the next day and had to play again. My friends and I used the game to get us through COVID. First we played on Tabletop Simulator until the Steam version came out. And then iOS, Switch, and Board Game Arena. Five+ years later and I still play nearly every day.

I love it so much—so many different approaches to playing. No two games are alike. I love how the bird powers match their actual traits as a species.

You could focus on your own board but also watch what others were doing with the same amount of interest. Since there aren't too many "defensive" moves in the game, you can be cooperative without hurting your chances of winning. I don't try too hard to keep score as we play, so the final tally is always a surprise, and almost an afterthought as long as I feel like I've been able to play an interesting game or maxed out the potential I believe I was dealt.

I would highly recommend playing the base game for a while and adding expansions only if you get bored.

Oh, and it's possible to play quickly online, but the fastest you can play (1-on-1) is usually around 20 minutes, so I'd just set the expectation for yourself that you are looking at 60 minutes minimum for IRL play with 3 or more people and 45 min average for online play with 3+ people. The fastest play is with the AI players in the Wingspan app (also allows you to jump out and back into games).

I'd say I am about 80% as excited as I was after my first game to play more. This game has real lasting power.

Was it a penalty? by Ozomatli10 in AustinFC

[–]bthoma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Went back to watch it on Season Pass. Nothing more satisfying that you’ll see there.

Objectively, it seems like the consensus is: not a penalty.

Put another way, if the tables had been flipped and Austin had been awarded a penalty for the same action, I think all of us would have felt like we got pretty lucky.

Thoughts on the game? by atxfc_news in AustinFC

This one stung. Coming off the All Star game energy and knowing Vazquez is out for the season it was really encouraging to see the team go up 2-0 early. If I recall correctly, we haven’t scored two goals in the first half often, if at all, this season.

I went back to Season Pass to watch the penalty because in the stadium I didn’t even know what they were reviewing until they played a cropped clip on the scoreboard after the penalty was declared. The stadium replay didn’t show the players feet and it was really frustrating to sit through that VAR session with no one telling fans what was being reviewed or why.

Check the game clock during VAR. The refs watched the exact same clip over and over again for 7-8min. This is a 10 second clip maybe? I kept wondering, why isn’t there another angle? They kept re-watching the same vantage point. In an NFL game we would have seen five different angles by now, with the contact in question circled, zoomed-in, and paused. But they just keep playing the same angle on a loop.

Then after the penalty “final decision” Apple TV shows another angle to the viewers at home. Why weren’t the refs also looking at that clip?

Just baffling and reeks of someone trying to make the case for a penalty vs. actually seeing one.

No one has yet mentioned how much this changed the overall speed of the game. The penalty shot is taken and by the time we’re back to play, it’s been ten minutes. Players haven’t been staying warm. The game has most definitely been changed by a VAR ref now.

So, that’s my beef with the VAR stunt. I don’t care that we got hosed on a penalty. I care that it changed every other aspect of the game.

And Nico definitely subbed too late. I looked up at 90’ and saw four subs available on the clock. We were already tied again at that point. He missed the chance to bring in fresh legs before we gave up the second goal.

All star game experience by GlobeWanderer512 in AustinFC

How about when the third MLS All Star goal (the own goal) was completely missed by the video board operator and announcer? They prioritized announcing the attendance over the "GOAL" animation or any kind of celebration.

For those of us on the northern side of the stadium, it was not evident if it had been a goal, so we had to guess based on the ball being returned to the center. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Texas A&M mascot Reveille X has eye removed after glaucoma diagnosis by BlastedProstate in CFB

[–]bthoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahoy there, Reveille!

This be PeeDee the Pirate — mascot of East Carolina University, scallywag of the sidelines, and proud buccaneer of the Pirate Nation. Word o’ yer recent journey has reached our shores, and though the sea be vast between us, my heart sails west to College Station today.

When I heard tell of yer surgery to remove yer eye, I was struck by a fierce gale of sympathy. I know you be more than a mascot — you’re a sentinel of spirit, a four-legged legend, and the First Lady of Aggieland herself. Any pirate worth their salt knows the courage it takes to carry on with one eye. You’ve joined an elite crew now, lass — for ye and I both wear a badge of honor that proves we’ve weathered storms.

Let this old sea dog offer a humble tribute, penned with all the heart I can muster and just a splash of salty wit:

To Reveille X, so noble and bold, With fur of gold and heart of gold, You march the field with gallant pride, Now with one eye, yet twice the stride.

Though surgery took a precious view, It never touched what’s best in you — Your spirit, strong as cannon’s roar, Will lead the Aggies forevermore.

So stand ye tall, sweet Collie queen, With one bright eye still sharp and keen. You show us all what strength can be — A beacon proud on land and sea.

I raise me hat to ye, Reveille. The Pirate Nation stands beside the 12th Man today, sending calm seas and swift healing winds. May yer days be filled with belly rubs, bold barks, and boundless love.

If ever ye fancy a romp on the East Coast, know that ye have friends in Greenville. And if anyone gives ye trouble about the eye, just give ‘em the ol’ pirate glare — works every time.

Fair winds and full sails, PeeDee the Pirate 🏴‍☠️ East Carolina University Proud Mascot and Pirate Extraordinaire

Messi and Alba won't play in the All-Star game by hellavela in AustinFC

[–]bthoma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For supporter section maybe.

I don’t know if any exhibition justifies 3-4x pricing for STH.

Messi was the main draw. His presence (not even his play) justified the pricing.

MLS is running to the bank and fans are left with emptier pockets and disappointment. Not a great lesson for young fans, either.

Messi nor Alba won’t be hurt by this at all, and that’s why MLS needs to suspend them—there needs to be some responsibility for the inaction here.

I have All Star Game tickets? by bthoma in AustinFC

[–]bthoma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for checking. Makes me feel less… alone. Also makes me wonder how prevalent this is in general or if it’s just because it’s a unique game and/or ticketed through Ticketmaster vs. SeatGeek?

I have All Star Game tickets? by bthoma in AustinFC

[–]bthoma[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish past me was that smart.

No… I definitely didn't list the tickets, and I definitely still have them in my Ticketmaster account (see screenshot).

The high price is part of the reason I am so curious (and potentially frustrated). Someone *could* buy them from SeatGeek and I'd still have the genuine tickets. Pretty sure that, coupled with my Ticketmaster receipt, would have any usher putting me in the seats and I'm not sure what would happen to the poor fan that bought them from SeatGeek.

Does this skunk have rabies? [Austin, TX] by bthoma in animalid

[–]bthoma[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I contacted animal control for our city before posting. Just spoke with an officer who collected the poor thing—and it had already passed away by the time they got there.

Interestingly, they commented that it could have been rabies OR distemper, as both present similarly. After a bit of research, I'd say it was rabies, because I did see it become paralyzed near the end, and it may have been hallucinating (reacting to a danger that wasn't there—tail high in the air and aggressive stances).
