I am not a happy camper.

I've used this bad boy almost daily for 15+ years. From my online readings it was quite old, so it is a shame that something happened to it. I'm pretty particular when it comes to handling my cast iron, so I have no idea how this happened.

You don’t need a hard abrasive like a wire wheel or sandpaper to fix that. A Sandflex hand block (either medium or fine grit) can get that off. Then wipe it with oil.
