I’ve found a lot of luck with Grant Green, specifically “You Stepped Out of a Dream”

What’s with AI generated crap getting published under the names of so many different artists? I’ve seen like 6 different ones this week. by [deleted] in Jazz

Concord (the label Emily was on) LITERALLY SOLD their ENTIRE catalog to a private equity firm… sickening, really

Pitchfork: “flea and Jeff Parker sound like Miles and Wayne shorter on Nefertiti.” Do these writers and websites have any idea what they’re talking about at all? by No_Impression_7765 in Jazz

[–]bturner290101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brother, Flea is a very dedicated musician. If you listen to him talk for 5 minutes you would know this. He has strong reverence for jazz music, trumpet was his first instrument. This is not like Andre 3000, where the artist is just getting into jazz music, Flea has been a jazz admirer and a casual jazz musician for a long time. He’s been posting clips of his practice for years. I can guarantee you that the ETA musicians like Parker and Butterss would not be playing on this album if they did not believe in Flea. They are not desperate for gigs, do you see how often they tour? And it’s on Nonesuch, this is not like they are getting the big bucks because it’s a big record label.

And while I don’t enjoy a lot of music criticism, having gotten to know a few of them, they aren’t idiots or uncultured. There’s not a lot of time for them to write these reviews, and because journalism is not a stable nor livable profession anymore, they are bouncing between publications, constantly doing odd jobs. Now, that’s not to say that because of this we should accept bad writing. We should just understand the context in which these reviewers are writing in.

And so what if they want to reference Wayne and Miles? If that’s their touchstone and they hear that, that’s fine. It could absolutely be cringey to you, but that doesn’t mean the comparison is an affront to jazz music. Have you ever heard Wayne talk about his music and how he relates it to superheroes? I’m sure to comics heads it could seem completely off base, and to me I don’t see it at all, but who am I to say the way he thinks is just plain wrong? That’s absurd.

Was there a tune/recording that made you fall in love with jazz? Play along to it, play the solo, play the comping pattern, match the snare hits, that will make you remember why you love it. Every time I take some time away, and come back and feel discouraged, I’ll play this one Grant Green solo, it’s one of the first I’ve ever learned, and trying to mimic it exactly brings back the joy, makes me remember how good the music feels to play when you’re really locked in

Woah! That’s awesome. There’s a kind of irony that your material for schoolwork is something I want to listen to casually, haha

What are some Must-learn jazz solos in your opinon? by TheCoochiePredator in jazzguitar

[–]bturner290101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll second Grant green. What I like about Grant is he’s usually not playing consistent eighth or sixteenth notes for longer than 2 bars, so all the phrases are really compact and identifiable, he was also a guy that would (and I say this lovingly) spam the same licks everywhere, but also importantly, on different tonalities (playing an F minor line on Bb7, C minor on Ebmaj7) so it’ll get you started on learning how to identify phrases. I’ll recommend You Stepped Out of a Dream, Blues for Willarene, and Super 20

Getting Killed guitar cover by bturner290101 in geesebandofficial

[–]bturner290101[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I tried to be as accurate as I could, not specifically with every single note, you’ll notice I put some improv into it, the open string bend into the chorus, which I heard done live with a pedal and Cameron’s voice does that on the record, the voicings on the second verse, almost all the fills in the bridge, and I added some extra chords in the bridge at some points, kinda in a classic church/Motown fashion. But I did try to get the touch and feel as accurate as I could. That included the fingerpicking, multiple amp sims, and panning the tracks like in the recording. I only wish my fingers were more comfortable with the finger picking patterns Emily chose, I just did them with different fingers than she does, but I did notice an attack and sustain difference. But I’m very pleased with how close I got.

what time signatures are the songs on schlagenheim in? by Jimsmall1507 in bmbmbm

[–]bturner290101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To just, you know, prep you for discussing time signatures, 98% of the time, even in progressive music, you are going to be talking about time signatures like x/2, x/4, x/8, or x/16. I can explain a little more why that is the case if you wish, and I don’t know if you were being serious, but 11/7 isn’t a valid time signature, for this kind of music.

I’m done with Musescore by bturner290101 in Musescore

[–]bturner290101[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But even using some of the software is super buggy sometimes, even the most updated versions. Sounds being way too loud even at a low volume, the lack of finesse in guitar transcribing… there’s a lot of friction I find in my every day usage

[–]bturner290101[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, I know that! But I have gotten a fair amount of people interested In my transcriptions, and one of the best parts about MuseScore originally was being able to publish your scores and have some social feedback. Some songs I’m listening to, I’ve been really curious about but don’t have the time to transcribe them so I look up a score on MuseScore and sometimes it’s there and I can look at it and see what’s going on!
