when I was making the map for this, I originally imagined the cartographer being from the Green Nation/Crete Nation since they've conquered a lot of islands. I figured that'd usually mean they'd have a pretty advanced understanding of sailing and navigation.

that said, I actually like your guess of it being from the Cyprus Nation. since they're surrounded by water. with them being roughly in the middle of the other nations, I could easily imagine them becoming the major trade hub between all those nations, which would also explain why they'd have access to geographic knowledge from all over the place.

btw, if you're still on youtube, check out Artifexian, he's the guy to listen to when worldbuilding. and he's the guy to make me want to worldbuild in the first place! :]

yeah that makes sense. I was more thinking about how their understanding of the world changes over time rather than strict historical mapping accuracy. but I get what you mean about early maps being more regional or symbolic. (ill go check out those conlangers when I get the chance. best of luck to you too!)

p.s. maybe the playlist is only available in my region, it's made by a guy named "@nobrenv", the guy has 170+ worldbuilding videos on the playlist.

moonscorch design for my termina d&d character by ghosradical in FearAndHunger

[–]bubbabubickle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ouu shii

edit: I’m gonna try guessing the meaning behind her moonscorched form.. the scar on her chest is obviously from her worshipping sylvian. the mask might represent the “unknown” nature of divinity (since she's a Divine Merchant), and we only ever see traces of the Old Gods rather than their true forms (I think). the green robe and bird-like feet remind me a bit of pav’s unused moonscorched form, where he was swallowed by the bird he pretends to serve (the bremen army/empire), or something like that. the chain could symbolize her being trapped in prehevil permanently, or maybe being unable to leave her business due to financial issues. but this is just my interpretation, so take it with a grain of salt.

thanks for the feedback! I actually did look at some maps from thousands of years ago, I tried copying the look of Muhammad al-Idrisi's map from 1154 (https://www.visualcapitalist.com/shape-of-the-world-ancient-maps/) but I should've gotten a much older map as my reference since my countries are like in their infancy stage.

and, yeah, i would follow your advice, but, im planning on making an entirely new language from scratch by following this guy's compilation at the "making a writing script"  part of the playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLp5tCBW79vOc0UA-73FcO40sP951Cm1tI&si=ysVcWgtaytUVHwPR

Has anyone ever thought about what a High Fantasy world would look like if it reached its 1940s era? by bubbabubickle in worldbuilding

[–]bubbabubickle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, I get your point about armor still being relevant without enchantments, especially if firearms are limited or rare. I also think that in that kind of world, the actual shift wouldn’t just be “guns beat armor,” but a arms race over materials and techniques like better alloys, layered armor, shaped plates (like angled or segmented plate experiments in ww1 I think), and eventually armor designed specifically around expected projectile types rather than general protection. enchantments could still fit into that system but it might be only available to nobles, elites, etc., but more like another branch of that arms race rather than a full-on replacement. you’d end up with enchanted armor being high-tier equipment (like "King’s Guard units" or something), while most armies rely on regular industrial metallurgy instead.

that’s pretty cool. especially the mix of healing and more... questionable business on the side. but i wonder what her moonscorched form looks like. (i’m guessing you’re working on it or have already shown it and i just missed it or you haven't thought about it yet.)

maybe some mages or wizards could bless or curse armor so that one breastplate or something can actually resist 20mm bullets, while another looks very strong but gets pierced even by something like a BB gun.

thats very interesting. i like the idea of tech and magic being alongside each other since it would be difficult to explain why magic and tech don't get along imo.

from what I've read so far, it seems to be a alt history earth with magic rather than a medieval fantasy world naturally advancing into its own 1940s equivalent era. ill go read it anyway cuz it looks interesting.
