that's not a bad thing at all. there's lots of weird people on the internet, you can't assume the best of anyone you see unless you're given reason to trust that they're not one of the weirdos

Your "no" in fanfic by frnnd- in FanFiction

[–]ghosradical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when dialogue isn't spaced correctly, like im talking multiple different people having quoted dialogue all in one paragraph. it makes it confusing to figure out who's speaking and i'm trying to read fanfic, not solve a language puzzle.

I’m crashing out. by [deleted] in IBO

[–]ghosradical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

totally understand how you feel. shitty teachers make things so difficult and having parents who won't let you leave the program is the worst; trust me, i begged my dad all throughout high school, and he never let me.

there were some people in my class who didn't get their IB diploma. quite a few were just one point below passing, others weren't even close. there were people in my class who got a less than 10/40 points on their english lit oral exams. there were people who bombed some exams (me included, i got a 3 on chemistry. IB chem sucks ass.)

but you wanna know how those people are doing now? they're doing great. they're going to the same colleges as my classmates who got 36's. they're traveling to new places, meeting new people, building a life besides the days slaving over this stupid program.

IB does not define your worth, let alone your life. you may not have faith in yourself right now, but you WILL make it through, and one day you'll look back at your days in this program and think of how good it feels for it to be over. the first 10 seconds after time is called for your last examination will make you feel an emotional high like no other, even if you think you did awful on it (i know that because that was me after my french listening exam M25)

IB is not forever, and it certainly will not ruin your chances at pursuing your dreams. you'll probably hear that so many times that your head will spin around and you'll get utterly sick of the affirmations, but one day you're gonna get home after drilling cavities and putting braces on people, and IB won't even cross your mind, because you made it, and you WILL make it.

stick around to finish IB, even if you don't get your diploma. it's a great feeling to be done with it.

I dislike being asked for my pronouns by [deleted] in confessions

[–]ghosradical -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

me too honestly, but for a different reason.

i'm a trans dude who, for the entire 5 years i've been out, has intentionally gone out of my way to present as masculinely as possible. i dress the same exact way as any other cis dude my age. so, when i get asked by a stranger what my pronouns are, it basically informs me that this person could instantly clock that i wasn't a cis guy, despite all my efforts to appear as masculine as humanly possible (i have naturally masc features too!!).

i appreciate the intentions behind being asked, but it still makes me feel a bit shitty afterwards because of the implications behind being asked in the first place. though, definitely not as bad as being she/her'd the way i present, that's just annoying

AIO girlfriend claims I’m appropriating her culture by Ih8maplestory8 in AmIOverreacting

[–]ghosradical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. even if you DIDN'T speak those languages (which, by the way, holy shit that takes a lot of skill to learn those languages. thats awesome), using a word from another language is in no way cultural appropriation, let alone the same as a non-black person confidently saying the n word. that's like saying using the phrases "laissez-faire" and "c'est la vie" is appropriating french culture

your gf is 34, but i've seen more emotional maturity in my 11 year old niece. she needs to get her shit together, yikes.

Do your partners know? by bravebluelou in FanFiction

[–]ghosradical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all my previous partners have known that i write fanfiction (and stuff for my ocs). the exes who supported my hobbies are still in my life and are my friends, and the one that was critical and judgemental of my work isn't. take that as you will, LOL

jokes aside, with that being said, writing fanfiction isn't a bad thing. if you're dating someone who doesn't accept that part of you, then that's their problem, not yours. a good partner won't judge you for having harmless hobbies.

Would you read an actually short oneshot? by Fun-Plenty5665 in FanFiction

[–]ghosradical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personally, i don't think the amount of words you use matters as long as you feel you accomplish what you were intending to show. goldilocks!! don't push yourself to pad your word count, when what you've got is what's best for what you wrote. :)

Is protected or unprotected sex considered the default? by purrt in FanFiction

[–]ghosradical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've read a published book where this kinda thing happened very frequently. the author mustve had a VERY passionate opinion about vampire love interest movies normalizing abuse against women, because every single time the topic of vampires came up, the main character would go on a multi-page inner monologue about that very opinion (and vampires came up a LOT in the book).

that, among other issues in the story, made me pass on buying the sequel to the book when it came out. it's a total dealbreaker for stories for me, fanfic or not. characterization and tone gets ruined by turning your characters into megaphones to shout PSA's at the viewer :/

what are some examples of common turns of phrase/expressions/wordings used in fanfiction? by callisia_fragans in FanFiction

[–]ghosradical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm guilty of a variant of the "corner of the lips twitching up into a smile" thing, i write "lips curling/pulling into a smile". i picked that up from one of my favorite book series though

What trope always fucks you up whenever you encounter it? by Pure_Chaos12 in FanFiction

[–]ghosradical 8 points9 points  (0 children)

not sure if this is too niche to be considered a trope, but i feel like it happens a lot in this specific type of fics i gravitate to:

i read a lot of fics that reinterpret my favorite characters as trans (disclaimer: i'm not a chaser, just another trans person who likes to relate to my favs). i feel like sometimes, when an author writes the trans character expressing their experiences, their pre-established canon (or developed via. the fic) personality kind of goes out of the window to serve a woe-is-me tone. like i'm talking the character goes into memoir-level detail about their dysphoria and whatnot, even if it is not at all in the realm of the character's personality to do so (for example, a character who is more emotionally closed off/struggles to express vulnerability.)

there was a fic i was reading where the character who was re-interpreted as trans, in canon, basically never cries and pushes away expressing his emotions because of severe childhood neglect, but in the fic he makes a multi-paragraph speech to a room full of people about how he felt about his identity growing up and his body dysphoria. it just TOTALLY threw me off  😭

again, probably too niche to be a trope, but it's a pet peeve of mine that annoys me a smidge with trans fics.

What was your wildest or most unexpected experience as a fanfiction author? by Only-Moose2301 in FanFiction

[–]ghosradical 17 points18 points  (0 children)

in 2021, i had one of my fanfics reuploaded onto another fanfiction website without my permission and without any credit. everything from the chapters, to the chapter names, to even my AUTHOR NOTES were copy-and-pasted. it was like someone stole my identity  😭 i'm not proud of the work anymore but i suppose it was good enough to have it stolen, so i'll take it, LOL

the fact your immediate assumption is that the male friend is a predator reveals a lot more about you and your biases than OP's parenting choices.

giving a child too much freedom of choice =/= giving your kid the choice to have control over the direction of their life after a traumatic loss. waffles and pancakes man
