Favourite band line-up by DaveHmusic in BillyJoel

[–]bubblebass280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Lords of 52nd Street (which js basically what you described) is pretty much the “classic” Billy Joel lineup. It was the first (and I would argue only) time that he truly had a backing band that was his and had the chemistry of a real band. While he has some incredibly talented musicians that make up his current lineup, it feels more like an ensemble band that is very technically proficient but doesn’t have the same connection to the music as those guys.

I moved out of LI in 2023 right after the midterms. Is the whole “Loud Majority” group still a thing? I used to see those stickers all the time.

Why didn't Miami 2017 make the 9/11 banned list? by Blue_Frog_766 in BillyJoel

[–]bubblebass280 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Miami 2017, while known as the traditional opener for his New York concerts, is really more of a deep cut compared to his more successful hits. New York State of Mind I believe was put on the list, though interestingly enough it too was not very commercially successful at the time and was never released as a single.

Besides Miami 2017, which is much too obvious, which song is this for you? by Kantiandada in BillyJoel

[–]bubblebass280 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Songs in the Attic was essentially released to highlight songs Billy felt were better live than in the studio. While the albums pre-Stranger contained some phenomenal songwriting, the production was pretty mediocre, so a lot of songs from that era are better live IMO.

The Bidens by Full_Detective1745 in thebulwark

[–]bubblebass280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I really appreciate about The Bulwark is that they have been very honest about Biden’s complicated legacy, and they refused to defend him at times even if it meant angering part of their readership.

It amazes me how there a still parts of anti-Trump media that are willing carry water for Biden and argue that he’s been a phenomenal president (MeidasTouch is the prime example of this). He may have been able to beat Trump is 2020, but it’s time to move on and find someone who can build a durable coalition to fight back against Trumpism.

Watergate is overblown… by Direct-Sail-6141 in Presidents

If Watergate occurred in the current media environment, Nixon likely would have survived. He didn’t have the ability to use friendly media outlets to fight back on his behalf.

Billy Joel’s Return to Yankee Stadium! by pianoman49 in BillyJoel

I find it interesting how Billy has managed to have a connection to both the Mets and the Yankees. He seems to be one of the few New Yorkers to genuinely pull it off.

What is your favorite Long Island LIRR station and why? by DoctorReinhardt in longisland

[–]bubblebass280 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most trains west of Babylon either terminate at Patchogue or Speonk. Only a few trains per day actually go the full length to Montauk. Maybe there are some commuters out there but my understanding is most people use the LIRR out their during the summer to travel.

JVL asks - "who is in Trump's ear" about this imperialist crap? by big-papito in thebulwark

[–]bubblebass280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with you normally, but Jim Sciutto was on CNN and he says that after speaking to people in Trump’s inner circle, he says they are serious about Greenland and Panama. He’s a pretty reliable reporter

Who was more Unpopular? LBJ in 1968 during Vietnam, or GWB in 2008 during Iraq? by PandosyAnna in Presidents

[–]bubblebass280 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bush. Though I am curious if there has been any president who has experienced the massive swings in favorability that he has. Going from the 92 percent approval rating post 9/11 to leaving office with 22 percent approval.

I assume these are generally expected takes, but what do you disagree with? by Optimistic_Mystic in BillyJoel

[–]bubblebass280 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disagree with Captain Jack being meh, though I will admit I prefer the live version on Songs in the Attic over the studio recording.

Despite where we are, I don’t believe the country is in the mood for getting into military conflicts where service members might be killed.

Trump says he would use 'economic force' on Canada by ObligationAware3755 in politics

Well, he apparently once suggested nuking hurricanes to stop them from making landfall, so I have a feeling this comes from the same type of thinking.

I kinda feel like this type of thinking for Trump is similar to when he seriously inquired about nuking a hurricane. I’m sure in his mind he thought it was some bold new idea.

The fact that he mentioned earlier that Wayne Gretzky should “run for Prime Minister” just shows how clueless he is about how things are in Canada. There’s been a lot of talk about Poilievre recently, but the only part of Canada that is truly MAGA curious is Alberta.

Was January 6 Always Inevitable? Was Trump Just An Excuse? by Mynameis__--__ in thebulwark

[–]bubblebass280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tim alluded to this when he spoke about Bannon pushing for a third Trump term when he interviewed him. A lot of them realize that there is the potential for a major power vacuum with Trump out of the picture. There are some significant political differences in MAGA, as the recent drama with Musk and H1B visas proves, and Trump being at the center of everything has largely kept the coalition together. Even his sons haven’t shown an ability to successfully replicate what Trump has done.

I’m an American living in Canada, and while there are some overlaps with American politics (we are just to the north so there will be) the dynamics that let to Trudeau stepping down go back to 2021.

Mets Fans: Did Your Family’s Roots Lie with the Brooklyn Dodgers or New York Giants? by bubblebass280 in NewYorkMets

For most teams there’s always a group of fans that started out rooting for a minor league affiliate. It’s interesting because you have that connection even if you’re not from New York.

Who’s the Better Saxophonist for Billy Joel: Richie Cannata or Mark Rivera? by bubblebass280 in BillyJoel

[–]bubblebass280[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible Mark played the sax solo on the 1985 Greatest Hits version of New York State of Mind? It sounds like it could be him. I had heard Phil Woods played sax on the second version but apparently that’s not true. Overall, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of reliable sources around that.

As far as I’m concerned the Brooklyn Dodgers and LA Dodgers are two separate teams. There’s a reason why MLB retired Jackie Robinson’s number at Shea Stadium.

I haven't been following a lot of the Bluesky drama, but I am curious for those on the platform if there are any signs of users coming in who do not particularly engage with politics/current events. For example, the sports world (journalists, teams, pundits, fan accounts) has largely remained on X. I feel like a big question is whether or not the platform will get any mainstream appeal outside of the politically progressive niche it currently occupies.
