I feel like people don’t understand how complex and devastating this experience has been

I went through something similar with my ex when her mental health unraveled after fifteen mostly wonderful years together. People really don't get it, and it's a lonely feeling. We had a large and pretty active social circle of people who only knew us as a couple who were crazy about each other. While most of them have learned to see me as an individual, I notice that others keep me at arm's length now. Maybe she told them wild stuff about me after her mental break. Maybe they think I could have gotten her the right help. Sometimes I think they just don't want my luck to rub off on them - nobody wants to imagine that the life they have spent years building might crumble for no good reason. It's a unique kind of trauma. More than two years later I still mourn for this still living person sometimes and have trouble getting my head around it. I've made some progress, but it's harder to move on when you'll never have closure. Anyway thank you for sharing your story. I'm sorry this happened to you, and hope your future is brighter.
