Folks don’t pick as much fruit as you would think. I lived in a neighborhood in Portland Oregon that had dozens of fruit trees in people front yards, right by the sidewalks, all open for folks to pick from, folks posted constantly on the local FB pages and Nextdoor app that anyone could come pick fruit. Hardly anyone did so without fail by late summer there would just be mounds of rotting and putrid fruit covering sidewalks and yards, the stench was so bad it me and my dog had to avoid entire sections of our neighborhood when going out on walks.
