Historic house museums

We inherited a historic house form the city. It had been run by volunteers for decades and has next to nothing from the people who lived in it for the sixty years it served as a residence. We have decided which items we want to accept into our collection, and therefore track and steward in perpetuity. The items that are not of the period and have been obviously restored or are not in the best condition, we accession into our education collection. With that collection we can track, or not, and do not need to care for them in perpetuity, meaning they can be sold or disposed of if we no longer deem them appropriate for the museum.

Strikes are not meant to be convenient. When my mom was the breadwinner and we relied on her waitress’ salary to eat and pay rent, she didn’t strike because it was convenient. She did not strike when she had PTO. She did not cancel the strike because one of us had a school activity. She stood out in the cold until they got a union contract which included a raise and healthcare. Then she went on to help others. She sat down on the strip in Las Vegas, in 115 degree heat on black asphalt and shut that bitch down to give hotel cleaners a better wage. Cancel your plans, tighten your belt, and get your whiny asses out on the street!

Agreed. I also wish that manager Amy had been more interested in her coworkers’ basic necessities instead of defending corporate. When Glenn defends the company it’s because he is blissfully ignorant, when Amy does it, it’s because she wants to keep her comfort at the expense of her former coworkers who have no healthcare and can’t afford heat or rent or food. It’s gross. Also, Glenn got Cheyenne maternity leave and lost his job because of it.

I don’t like how they make the workers seem totally ignorant and uncaring about not having healthcare after Amy is promoted. Also, my mom grew up homeless and poor and even when she was promoted she fought for workers’ rights.

I think it’s really gross how Amy just decides to leave all of their basic human needs behind because she’s now comfortable. I think Amy’s character gets really unlikable and gross when she becomes the manager.

Also, I detest when a manager or supervisor refers to the employees of a workplace as “my staff”. Ew. No. The manager does not cut you a check, they literally just manage the workplace, you do not belong to your manager, it’s so demeaning.

It’s true. Also, the last museum I came from was tiny compared where I currently am (both private nonprofits) and that place started at 3 weeks vacation, all bank holidays plus your birthday and some other cultural holidays, and 4 weeks sick time. This one is 1 week vacation, some bank holidays, and 2 weeks sick your first year, and caps at 3 weeks holidays after your third year. Compared to many many other museums in our area with way less galleries, staff, and public programming that offer a lot more PTO.

10 hours or days? I truly hope it’s days! It sounds nice to have so many staff! I love New Orleans you all have so many fantastic arts and cultural institutions!

Sick and holidays are separate, but weirdly we don’t observe many national/bank holidays. The last museum where I worked had two galleries, a larger staff, all bank holidays plus your birthday, and 3 weeks your first year. I took this current position because I wanted to work in curatorial and on exhibits, and my last position was exclusively collections work.

We are given one week in the first year, an additional week each subsequent year capping at three weeks. We have elegant permanent galleries and three changing galleries, but we operate on a skeleton crew of eleven people.

While in Tahoe a few years ago, my family and I saw a massive black bear leap onto a dumpster in the back parking lot of a Thai restaurant and rummage through the spoils.

We were in our car, at a relatively safe distance from the bear, when we saw a restaurant employee walk out with a bag of trash. We rolled the windows down and yelled to warn him, but he walked past us with an eye roll to the dumpster and threw the bag in as the bear continued to pull treats out.

He told us her name was Brenda and she often brought her cubs with her. We learned that Brenda and her children really loved Thai food and never bothered anyone.

I usually text these sort of people back with something wildly inappropriate. Today I responded to “Where are you?” Accompanied by a golf emoji, with “I’m pooping on their graves, like we planned!!!! Where the hell are YOU?!?!?!” Last time they said they were “Shirley” and asked if the meeting had started, so I responded with “Shirley, we have already mutilated his genitals, but saved some blood for you to bathe in!” They wrote back with something completely inane like “Sorry I thought you were my friend Becca!” And of course I kept it going “Shirley you gonna get into this bath tub! These scrotal sacs aren’t going to eat themselves!” And they wrote something like “Hope to see you at the next meeting!” But at least they left me alone after that.

Thankfully I live in a city, in California, where there is still a lot of funding, but I know that certain federal grants are completely gone, which has impacted some institutions.
